The Portuguese colonial wars are usually overshadowed by the French in Algeria and growing terrorism in the Middle East during the 1970s and 80s
I think the french and Portuguese got the most dirtier and bloodiest colonial war of the 60's in africa between all the other European nation
That's because Portuguese colonies weren't really colonies. They weren't moving boat loads of settlers and their families to India or Nagasaki in Japan to expand. Are you familiar with early French colonies in North America? Like those colonies, the Portuguese set up fetorias all along the coast of lands they claimed in Africa, middle East, India, Pacific Islands and Japan. These were giant warehouses to act as trading post and forts. So in the late 1800s when nationalism took over and Portugal wanted land they had no experience or subtlety. You go from no history of oppression to martial law and cruel governors
Was better like that for the world not knowing abaut the Massive massacres of natives during the war,the indescreminated napalm bombings of thousands of natives on their villages starting in 1961 in Angola. Then the massacres continued also in Mozambique,and this until 1974.
Hundreds of thousands of civilian natives were just erased by direct orders of the President of the Council,That huge Evil POS Salazar
Argélia and Vietnan were very good to the Portuguese strategy and future politics in the Colonies,because the international community were all what was happening in Vietnan.
And so the Portugueses loyal to the Fascist Dictator and his politics of not even consider the independence of one Territory that was a possession of Portugal,and will still like that for how long as it took,and with the ones against just had very hard time,and many were never seen again. The natives of the Colonies,or accept the Portuguese Rule with 500 years,or the Next day their village was no more,with the women and children the first to feel the "fire".
Were very cruel 13 years for those poor countries.
And also for thousands of young Portuguese soldiers who where sent to the Colonies and defend them has Portugal,never return home,died in a war that they didin't understand and took their lifes in the name of the Slave Masters.
Only few international magazines or TV stations did nottest( were informed that something very serious was happening to the natives on the Portuguese Colonies. But the most was caught by secret Police and all their footage,photos,written accounts were confiscated and destroyed.
But some came to light,like in 1973 One irish missionsry in Mozambique was witness of one ( among hundredi) massacre in Mozambique,where a unit of Portuguese comandos Killed 900 old,women and children at the village of Wiriamu.
He went to the UN with his testemony,but only 1 year later the colonial Nightmare was Over.

Also, they literally killed alot of people trying to take over the country and, just adding a bit of a sidenote, had they have had the same amount of time as the hutu regime, they probably would have killed more people by the stats they had when they first entered rwanda.

Great video. Very informative. The bulk of what happened in Angola happened when I was a teenager so although I was vaguely aware that some sort of war was going on, I knew very little about it. Interesting to learn more about it.

Even in the context of the Cold War, all of Africa's problems boil down to tribalism and corruption. He said it here, the Angolans who fought under a communist flag weren't really communists, their tribal elders were just paying lip service to communism in order to secure Soviet and Cuban patronage. The same for the western-supported side. It was just another in a long line of tribal conflicts.
And I'm not letting the Portuguese and other Europeans off the hook, they're the ones who started all the problems because they're the ones who drew Africa's borders, splitting some tribal groups in two and forcing others to live in the same country with other tribal groups that hate them. I know it's a cliche answer, but I say it again, the first step in solving Africa's problems comes with a page-one rewrite of all of Africa's national borders.

One of the most frustrating parts of the African Union is that they decided, unilaterally, that the colonial borders upon independence would be maintained for the future of the continent. It was a law put in place, which aimed to avoid future conflicts, and prevent dictators/leaders attempting to use nationalism to take other regions and redraw their borders into a free-for-all of land-grabbing. This is to be expected in any part of the world, I mean any leader in the world is eager to take more land if they can. But the African Union relies on the assumption that over time all these different groups of people will eventually unify under a nation-state banner. Which is ridiculous, because so many tribes/groups have been split between borders, or their trade/livelihoods used to depend on being able to cross borders, emigrate. Far worse is that nation-states have in many cases been arbitrarily drawn up, with an enormously unequal share of resources or even access to water. The Sahel countries are ridiculously divided, far too massive and hard to manage. Countries that are enormous often have multiple different climates and geographical barriers between groups of people, so its hard to convince everyone to just give up their identities for the good of the nation. Nation-states are the concept that Europeans came up with and forced onto the rest of the world, because it worked for them it apparently has to work for others, even if certain groups become oppressed minorities or practically stateless like Tuaregs/Kurdish.

The tribal division of Africa was done on purpose, to weaken certain groups and to make sure minorities would side with the colonial powers.
They did the same across Asia, f.e. Sikhs were an integral part of the British Empire's police and military.
The colonial powers broke entire groups of peoples, nations ect... To extract the most wealth as possible.
Africa should learn to embrace diversity like they always tell Europe too.

It's been 20 years since the end of the war, and they seem too be doing decently well. It is a young country and they have oil, population is young so most were born after the war. They seem politically stable for an African country. I have high hopes for Angola.

The claim that the battle @ Cuito-Cuanavale was won by Apartheid South Africa and UNITA is simply untrue. Most historians agree that while the UNITA/SADF alliance was able to halt the FAPLA advance, they were unable to deal with the Angolans superior (Soviet supplied) air power (given their own aging, sanctioned air fleet) and were easily amenable to negotiations at which further evidence of their weakened position was the concessions they made in abandoning Angolan territory they held and ultimately ceding Namibia.
Cuito-Cuanavale ended in stalemate, with FAPLA unable to dislodge UNITA/SADF and the other side spent and unable to sustain further high intensity conflict.
The battle ended in a draw/stalemate neither winning, rather both sides achieved different things, South Africa won the operational side of things, they set out to stop the Angolans from going South (I've heard talk about fears of the Angolans crossing into Suid-Wes (modern day Namibia) while the Cubans and Angolans got a situational victory, from what I recall, they hunkered down the South Africans in that battlefield rather than allow South Africa to operate units elsewhere, I have heard this led to some gaining of terrectory later on as the South Africans where stuck holding positions. The only one to really win was Fidel Castro, who spun the story of the unstoppable South Africans being brought to a stalemate, and how great it was that it was "his" troops that did it.
nothing is the truth....they all tell a different story and with their own opinion,,,i have watched many of the videos...one such showed how the Portuguese neutralized the warships,,,which cleared showed....but one of the PAIGC negated that...he said that the Portuguese did not neutralized anything...what a liar...then the part where the Port Prisoners were freed...and this PAIGC member argued that never happened....
Bullshit! It was a decisive defeat for Cuba and FAPLA.
They never achieved a single objective. The SADF, who only numbered 3500 troops, stopped the numerically superior Cuban/FAPLA army in every engagement.
Bear in mind the Cuban occupational force numbered 75 000 by 1987. FAPLA numbered 150 000. Plus there were 10 000 Eastern Blok "advisors" in Angola mostly East Germans.
The SADF put the whole lot on the run.

The Cuban's left Angola after a 17 year occupation without ever defeating UNITA.
In 1992 a South African private military contactor employed by the Angolan government, defeated UNITA in within a few months with a few hundred troops.
The Cuban's failed to achieve this in 17 years with 75 000 troops.
Know your history! Speak to the people who were actually there!
The politicians denied the South Africans the military victory which could have been.
Had the politicians allowed the generals a free hand. The SADF would have walked over the Cubans within a few weeks.
As they did in 1975 during Operation Savannah when the South Africans pushed the Cubans back 3000 kms in 30 days.

there's just something about African civil wars that's just different from all other wars.
I believe its because Africans learned from their colonial overlords the concept that they are not fully human and they subconsciously internalized that. When two African groups (religious, ideological, etc.) were at extreme odds, they would fight each other with that Anti-African (Black) nihilism in mind leading to the most depraved outcomes and shockingly brutal acts of violence upon one another.

That there are things even they aren't going to do to their enemies at war. And Even when it comes to killing, there are rules regulating what can be used to kill. In African civil wars, anything goes. And no one cares for cease-fires unless guaranteed by the UN, US or other observer goups.

My own country had a soft civil war between Zanu and Zipra and I don't remember any of the things you mention. It was a fairly localised civil war but I don't remember anything extreme happening

It goes much further back to merchant colonies that set up on the coast in the 1400s, they integrated with the locals along the coast but only spoke Portuguese. The merchants who settled wanted to create their own sphere of influence separate from Portugal but also separate from the local people of the interior.

It takes more than a piece of paper or a flag to be really an independent country. China and the Soviets didn't help Africans because they cared about them, they simply wanted to replace the Europeans, and they did it. It is time Africans start to own up their own mistakes and failures. They kicked out millions of white Europeans born in Africa, and now they want to come to Europe, mostly uneducated and uninvited,instead of staying in their countries building a better future. Africans just seem incapable of running a country, just look at Zimbabwe and South Africa, once amongst the most advanced countries in Africa, what a shame.

We tend to forget that not everyone on Earth adheres to western culture. Out of 8 billion, less than 1 billion thinks and behaves based on that. For the rest - the norms are just different.
Europe and the US fought countless wars through countless centuries to reach a culture where disagreements can be handled by arguments and voting. There is no easy way - the rest must learn their own lessons. Just don't expect them to behave based on western culture, that would be a fatal mistake when they outnumber you 10:1.

What you are calling 'way of settling disagreements by way of voting and arguments' is called democracy, and the origin of democracy in the western culture is from the Greek culture, but it was heavily opposed by thinkers of that age such as Pluto and Aristotle, who preferred a philosophical King.
What led to the birth of democracy in Europe was actually the French Revolution before that they used to exists in monarchial systems, US had options of being a monarchy but it's founding fathers were inspired by the Roman Republic (not Empire which was ruled an imperial emperor).
Those cultures you people like calling 'uncivilized' were actually quite complex, a good example of it is the existence of democracy in Oromo culture and semi-democracy were elders casted votes in Bantu culture but colonialism essentially destroyed African political organisation and failed to replace it, for example; while British had the right to vote and entitled to human rights, in British colonies human rights wasn't a thing, and government only existed to keep the exploitation going on, sadly this is what Africans inherited as their post colonial political economy, attempts to break away from it through communism failed miserably because we all know communism doesn't work.
Yeah they got rich beacuse they started wars on Africa, South Asia, South America and the Middle West. Not in their countries. The right to vote only became a reality for most of the people in the last century. I wonder why people keep advocating these imperialist/colonialist powers.

Hmm, now I wonder whether the nation still deserves an international liberation/intervention. Almost anything Africa is just too tempting as to bring back a comforting status quo, if you know what I mean.
The main question I have is; why does there have to be an Angola? Let the tribes, under their parties form their own states in their respective regions in the north and the south. They have differences. No reason to make them exist under one government in one state. One side will always be unhappy, they won't get along. Just let the tribes do their own things.

Most African tribes usually number around 1 to 2 million people, this is a low population density at best they can only form a small city or a conglomeration of villages that's why further balkanisation of Africa by ethnicity is usually not considered, just imagine having over 2000 countries and all of them being small city states, smaller than countries like Luxembourg but with a land mass of German it doesn't look like a good idea.
What Africa needs is countries merging together to become stronger and federalisation of the government so that everyone feels they are not marginalized.
It’s a strategy to split people apart so that they can never rise against their colonizers. Even today no western nation will accept Africa to form its own borders. Also once a tribe gets into power they also want to invade and take resources. It’s all just a mess

My ex girlfriend is from Angola, and while she did mention Colonialism still is hurting many, she absolutely HATED the communists. Her uncle was killed, Aunts SAed, her father was imprisoned for many years, and where they lived nearly everyone was in poverty. Things had gotten better, but her family immigrated here to be safe.

This is a unique perspective unlike the South Africans that try and pretend they were in the right. For context my grandpa was a high ranking Cuban officer, and he, in his own words, “Hated, Hated, hated, everything the communists stood for”
Yet my grandpa recognized the struggle of the Africans affected by colonialism and fought alongside his men, and regularly told off his superiors.

Excellent documentary as far as I can judge. I had no idea that UNITA was Marxist, I always took them for liberals or christian-dems because of their alliance with the the USA and South Africa. I knew it was not the brutal mercenary terrorist force (FRELIMO) that ravaged Mozambique but a more legitimate force but I would have never thought of them as Maoists, to me things were simple then: the Cuban-backed side was the good guys and the Apartheid South Africa backed "contras" were the bad guys. How wrong was I? How correct is the depiction of UNITA as Marxists?
China VS Urss backed comunist insurgency was the whole point of the cold war.
Afghanistan, Angola, Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Cambodia and many more.

The part on the Portuguese Colonial War is misleading.
First the revolution started in the farms but the workers were armed with machetes and canhangulos (home made rifles) , they killed every white person the could , even babies (there is pictures os it) , cut peoples heads and put on spikes, they also massacred alot of africans because they wouldn’t revolt with them (Fun fact , highest awarded soldier of Portugal was a Portuguese born in Guiné , he fought for Portugal after the rebels killed family members of him, also had to fight inside the army because higher ups were racist and didn’t trust him).
Portugal planes didn’t kill 7000 people that is mad to think off , Portugal barely had any aircraft in the colonies even the army had very few soldiers.
When the rebelion started the army and air force had so little capacity that it took months to reach certain areas of the country (reinforcements and supplies had to arrive from Portugal).
In the beginning of the rebelion many farms became isolated and had to fend for themselves with what they had. Some would organize convoys with trucks and small 4x4 to reach safe places other just barricaded the farms and waited. Air Force place would drop the ocasional supplies and if they spotted the rebels would do some strafe runs.
Napalm would come later , first they would drop small bombs but they were ineffective because they would detonate in the top of the trees.
There where crimes from both sides , execution, mutilation etc.
Many soldiers suffered PTSD by watching there friends being murder and mutilated (cutting ears , nose , genitals , etc).
Dispite being cristians some rebels believed in voodoo and witchs , they would charge thinking the bullets wouldn’t hurt them.

The Cuban stole complete Portuguese factories, Neto was killed in the Soviet Union. Nothing works today in Angola, people starve, no sanitation.
