  • The mysterious Polynesian island jewel known as Tetiaroa is actually a 4.5 mile wide atoll comprised of 12 motus (small islands) and located just 36.5 miles (59 km) north of Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti.
It is probably most famously known for its now deceased but legendary owner, the charasmatic and moody Hollywood actor, Marlon Brando, although relatively few travelers have ever visited the place. (In actuality, Marlon didn't ever really OWN the place, but rather was privy to a 99 year LEASE to it from the FP government.)
Marlon Brando and Tarita TeripaiaInterestingly, Tetiaroa is still a rather pristine South Pacific getaway, having resisted tourism and development due to its private and exclusive ownership status over the years.
This enchanted atoll is still home to one of Tahiti's only protected bird sanctuaries as well as an intact and healthy surrounding marine environment. A luxury eco-resort called the Brando is slated to open on the atoll in 2013.

I wish I could afford to visit it and spend a few days there, I adored marlon and only he was divine enough to initiate this. He was gods chosen one.

the whole thing sounds like a massive excuse to build a hotel...the most environmentally friendly option would be to not build it...

Beautiful! This place seems to be true paradise on earth. Captivating and unique. I hope the project developed as Marlon would have wished.
Teihotu is the spitting image of his father. The same sensual
lips and expressive eyebrows, the calm way of speaking and facial expression! I hope he's doing well and I wish I could visit this place sometime!

Teihotu Brando is such a strong reminder of his father, not just his features but the mannerisms and everything.

I spent two weeks there in 1993 in a seaside hut, rustic yet nice. only one main dining room and a few beach BBQs, although they were called something else , cooked the fish in the ground. I had a great time and returned home with a case of intestinal worms.

You know, I'd love to own an island like that, but I am not a rich person so it will never happen. It appears though, that the wealthy are trying hard to make sure they, and their kind, get to hog up all the great places, and make luxury resorts out of these special places that no "commoner" will ever be able to enjoy. If somehow I ever become exceedingly rich, I'm going to find some special place, purchase it, and develop it as a place the average Joe can go. The commoners won't need the luxury, as they would be there for the special place. The rich will opt for somewhere else that they can spend thousands and thousands a day on and be pampered like princes........and this will leave the special place for special people un-enamored with themselves.

Greg Kerr not a bad idea, but than you need masses of ppl or its not sustainable. you need to pay taxes, security, everything flown in, clean up, set up and initial construction costs, personell and experts again flown in to keep everything running. that could be costly. Also if you have an island you dont like to have some idiots there i guess.

actually you can go to tetiaroa as an average Joe. From Tahiti there are day cruises with a catamaran, doesn't cost too much.
