Building a Big Flat Bottom Boat - The Story of Albatross

- I'm building a big flat bottom boat from scratch. Some people would say that's a bad idea. I don't agree. This is an attempt to explain why. It's a 26 footer with a beam of 10.
My wifes' uncle self built a 65 foot Dory tri mast sail boat with a pilot house. He wanted to be able to sail quickly to the Bahamas(under cover in the pilothouse if needed) and beach her if needed and he also wanted to be able to get into river systems to explore or to be safe during hurricanes in Florida. The flat bottom design with a raised keel allowed him to do all of these things.
Cool! I'd love to see it. Boats that are purpose built to that degree are always interesting to me.
It'd be great to sail a 40ft live-aboard boat [w/bow center board] with a hull so thick/resilient i could crash over any rocks [under 12knots] without sinking/severely damaging the boat.i'd just carry a dingy/big anchor/winch and drag myself off of whatever i might get beached on. my thought was having 15 cheap, 10" diameter detachable [bolted laterally], treated logs as a sturdy bottom set below durable 6" of foam as a hull. ... essentially ... a solar sailing barge with an powerful electric motor. .... OR ... Rig sails [cabin et al] on a WW2 (LCVP) Landing Craft - Higgins Boat ... ruclips.net/video/hde7OVJKdgg/видео.html
I love the music and the boat. I subscribe and I'm going to go watch the update.
Glad you like it Robb! Making music for my channel is one of my greatest pleasures. Have a great day!
I love it, wish it would have been longer (the video, not the boat). Hejja!
Haha🥰thanks! Tack!
Watching this video was very relaxing also my father use to own boats very similar to what your building when i have enough money i plan to buy a old boat sort of like yours .I like your design good luck
i think i got you beat..... my 100ft. is framed by a rectangle 5 x100 frame work that is made from railroad ties..... all the cross deck and hulls, 2 hulls mount to the frame...... along with the creature hut and other module huts..... it is an out rigger.
I like the look of traditional boats too. I like the shape of this hull too. It's not all that different from oyster luggers of old too.
You're absolutely right. They have a lot in common. Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU
This was awesome! Thankyou for sharing the build!
👍👍🙂
Sir Is there any pictures of how you did the bottom of the first boat? And if there is then is there anyway you would be willing to share them and send them to me? I'm just doing the exact same thing you did to the first boat and I'm trying to decide on how I'm gonna go about doing it. Thank you.
Cool! The first boat wasn't very well documented. I cut away the bottom with an angle-grinder. Put the top part of the hull the right side up on a flat surface coated in mould release. Then I simply did a glasfiber lamination against that surface and overlapping the hull around 20 centimeters. It did not turn out pretty but it worked very well. Talking to other boat owners on the lake, not a single person ever noticed that half of the hull was missing:)
Good luck! I hope to see pictures/videos!
@miormedia thanks for getting back. I have half been thinking of doing it that way myself. Way, I see it. I can do it a number of ways that will work, especially since the boat was headed for the junk yard. Since it was essentially a free junk hull, nothing I do is gonna make it worse.
@adamtedder1012 That's a great situation. There's no pressure, and everything you do to it is making it better.
@miormedia exactly. I'll definitely post up something on it, maybe under a different channel. I shitpost with this one and occasionally get put in youtube jail. The ahole in me can't help myself.
There is a rule of thumb; take the smallest boat you like, and buy one a foot shorter. That last one will become the boat you will use the most.
Well, I guess sometimes you just have to build a larger one.
Very nice video, I was a bit fearfull in the beginning of the video that this would be one of those amaturistic videos about an amaturistic boat but it turns out to be not at all. I quite like the idea principle, the boats lines but above all that its apearence is in balance. Not build clumsy but also not too fancy. Just an honnest boat, like those fishing vessels. Many happy sailinghours!!
Thanks! Very kind words. I'm glad you get what trying to accomplish.❤️👍
Any updates on this project?
Update out today!
Looking much like a Laxkutter. The Danish beach boats were flatter than the Swedish ones, i think there is some video "vorup beach"
Yeah, absolutely! The Danish boats have been another source of inspiration. A great example of form and function.
Horns making me chuckle alot 😅
Thumbs up 👍
Some of the Swedish Fishing vessels had side mounted Keels that could be lowered in deep water for stability. It would save cutting a hole in your bottom for the centerboard. With a rudder that also could be extended you might have a better design.
perfect idea!!
That is a good idea.. I just don't think it matches the esthetic style I'm going for. Side mounted keels are very common in the Netherlands, but I've never seen them here in Sweden. It did sting a bit, but the hole is already cut :)
So impressed with the way you were thinking out of the box.
I’ve had similar ideas, but since I’m disabled it’s difficult to get the help I would need. But, I’m not giving up yet, and one day I will build my flat bottom boat.
I’m glad I found your channel. The boat looks amazing. Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m looking forward to learning something different.
Texas
Kind words. So happy you enjoyed it! You've inspired me to keep on going with Albatross.
Best of luck with your boat project. I know you can do it. I hope I get to see a video! ❤🚢
The bow thruster channel is called "Jet Thruster"
Well as long as the sound of saws and a hammer can be heard, good. Progress.
Nice work. Looks like a very good design with lots of space. Looking forward to seeing more.
What interesting ideas and marvellous skills you have, and kindness in sharing them for viewers, thank you.
I love your drop keel, bow thruster idea, which isn't something I've heard of before.
The lines of your boat are classically beautiful, and the cabin is gorgeous.
Its an honour to be able to follow your beautiful and inspiring build.
Thanks Felix! Such kind words. It's people like you who keep me going. Stay tuned for more:)
Nice design. Will be watching with great interest.
first impressions "what in the world??" A few more minuets "This guys got talent!"
Kind words! I'm humbled 🙂
Music credit?
Glad you like it. I made it.👍😊
Id love to see more about the first boat.
this was fun thanks for your pioneering
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thanks! Updates are in the works.😊
Love the design, it looks great
Kind words Phil! Thanks!
Brilliant ...,
Thanks John!
Really great..❤️❤️👌
Thank you Nuwan! Glad you liked it. 🙂
Such an inspiration!
Thanks John!
Oj!
Exactly!
Update!!
Haha, love your entusiasm! There is one more video, about the pilot house. Then I had to pause the build. I explain why in this video: ruclips.net/video/ghhPHpeHLk0/видео.html
Thanks for the motivation! 😁❤
@@miormedia hey, just watched both videos.
Keep going!!
I love the project and I know about shallow waters, we boat in the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds in NC, where the shoals can be a sudden 12" deep. So beautiful but treacherous.
I looked up the area. Beautiful but treacherous sounds accurate. Looks like a really nice place to explore! I can imagine those sandy bottoms shift around on you.
