Thank you for the three videos. I will be implementing a QNAP based NAS with 10GBs and Thunderbolt 3/4 as inputs. Your tests have convinced me that it will be a good investment for the next five years. Also, I enjoyed your enthusiasm.
Just to clarify: This is NOT a USB-C Cable. It's a Thunderbolt Cable (big difference!!). Thunderbolt 3 and 4 just happen to use USB-C connectors (just like Thunderbolt 2 used Mini Display Port).
Also of note, QNAP HybridMount will allow those with a QNAP NAS and additional network storage (from QNAP or other manufacturers) to mount those local resources / network shares under the same umbrella when accessing the QNAP shares. So, for example, when you’re mounting QNAP shares you’ll also see your Synology network share folders (with an IP suffix appended to the folder name) along with it. This allows for a kind of one stop shop for all network resources if that is the sort of thing that tickles your fancy.

Hello, the reason why your getting poor write speed (~400MB) per sec to your QNAP is I believe you only used SATA SSD for cache in bay 1 and 2. Your model, in bay 1&2 can hold U2 NVME which would give you approx 3000MB write/read speed cache. Bay 3 & 4 are SATA SSD only. Change up to an NBME and it will go much faster.
Excellent vlog as always Tom. Interesting that your M1 was complaining about running out of memory. It would be interesting to see if the Intel i5 with EGPU would have struggled too. Keep up the good wor and Stay safe.

Great video. Just one suggestion, it would mean more to me that when you show your files transfers if you showed the transfer rate as well as the time. I know rates vary during the transfers, but the average rate would be vary helpful. This is very helpful if your are trying to know how your transfer rate compares to other networks. As in over USB, Thunder Bolt, 1G - 10G, etc.

Great video Tom. It should be pointed out that QNAP makes a small cheap 2.5GbE unmanaged switch and most of the new QNAP NAS units have 2.5GbE built in. Just for kicks you might also try connecting the QNAP NAS to your 10GbE switch via the built in QNAP 2.5GbE NIC(s). Maybe even try some LAG via 2.5GbE.
Even though I am no longer a Mac user, I have learned quite a bit about 10G setup over this 3-part series. I have yet to get there, but good things come to those who wait. :3 Oh, you may want to have another look on Ubiquiti's website because they are rolling out their SFP+-oriented "Switch Aggregation" series.
Thanks so much for this series! I just purchased the same NAS and am still missing on key component regarding the process of offloading from T5 SSD external hard drives. I edit Blackmagic RAW footage using Davinci on a Windows 10 machine. Is the best process to offload from my T5 directly to the NAS using USB port? Or from T5 to PC and backup to NAS. The end goal is to keep active projects on the U.2 NVMe cards so I’m trying to understand what will be the quickest/easiest offload. I have tried offloading older footage from T5 to a shared NAS folder on the HDD and it seems slow (maybe because of the drive?) Thanks for any help and for the awesome series !
Tom, Have you tried using the QNAP as a host for virtualization yet? With the RAM upgraded I bet you could run a decent Linux or Windows VM on it? great series!!!!

Something like Ubuntu Mate 20.04 can run on 4 - 6GB of RAM and will sit there quite happily on a 32GB virtual drive (allowing space for the OS and some data). 20.04 is the long-term support version hence why I suggested it I use a Raspberry Pi as my main system and it works for me. Maybe you could also look at using the QNAP as a proxy for your internet connection ( maybe I suggested that before?). Keep up the great work!!!!
Hi Tom. great stuff. I have a question (have the same set up in terms of NAS; Mac Mini M1). When I connect the QNAP T/3 - 10GBe (RJ45) adapter to my Mac Mini M1 I get in Systems preferences an Orange status. Yours is green. I still have my 1GB Ethernet port connected to the Internet.. Any ideas on why your status is green? Are you accessing the Internet also over TB/3 port? Your input would be highly appreciated. Cheers. Hendrik
I´m having the same setup as you have in your video. How did you connect the qnap switch to you network so qfinder can find it? For some reason, qfinder cant find my switch?
ideal. i tried both with my setup but for some reason could never get them to work. (probs were both dead modems to start with) ended up going for a Vigor 130 VDSL2/ADSL Modem witch worked first time with BT fiber

The assumption is you received the goods on the basis that you would create videos showcasing them, which means the goods are payment for the promotion of them. The content being on RUclips doesn't make them not applicable to the ASA rules that are in place. The product has gained exposure to your audience, which qnap will put a value on to them. The rules state it should be clearly stated within the video content itself, and not hidden away in the description.

Fantastic point. The 2.5GbE ports as standard on most Qnap NAS models is a huge plus.

II know it is 9 moths ago, but did you not notice when you did buy the M1 macmini als have a 10 Gbit option?

I think (from previous video's) Tom uses the original OpenReach VDSL Modem. However I cannot tell you if it's Huawei or ECI.
