Tom Odie is such a handsome boy!! I hope you Jess and the boys had a very Merry Christmas! Thank you for such a great entertaining and informative video!! Your friend across the pond.
Nice colour scheme, looks nice! I'd definitely pop off the worn architrave around the door and replace, it's an easy fix and will make the door frame look a lot better once it has a couple of coats of gloss.
Have you considered mounting a projector screen on the top of your entertainment stand, and pulling it upward in front of your wall mounted TV? Maybe even mounted just below top level on the backside so it is out of sight when retracted down?
I hadn't thought of this at all until someone else in the moment suggested it. I'll definitely be considering this method when I look at screens in the new year. Could well be the way to go.
Great video TOm. A trick for finding joists in walls is to use a magnet. Get a few neodymium disc magnets. Run them over the plasterboard until they stick, at which point the centre of the magnet is the centre of a nail or screw. Put a few on the wall and you'll find the rough line of the joist.
the ceiling might have a panel layer under the 2 plaster layers its semi common for panel ceilings to have been covered with plaster board at some point it would make sense as your house is a older one
Tom, firstly thank you for the shout out. I’m gutted you can’t move the Gas Meter but if it’s that expensive I don’t blame you. Loving the colour, better than ‘puke’ beige. Secondly please check your inbox I have emailed you just now about something you mentioned in the video. Thanks again for the mention
Well part 7 was fantastic , roll on part 8 in the new year! In regards to the HDMI over Cat extenders I actually bought the same ones in August this year to run a signal from my PC to my TV though funnily I ended up not using them. Glad to know they're working well so I know it wasn't a wasted purchase 😃.
Loving the blue walls and projector! Wall mounting the TV and dropping the projector screen down from the ceiling reminds me of Techmoan's "hidden home cinema" video :P
I can see you're very attached to that color blue, but you really should consider repainting it SMPTE grey. It will help reduce light reflecting off the screen from the projector returning back to the screen and reducing contrast. You'll get a much more dynamic image as a result.
Thanks for the suggestion! But a reminder that this is primarily our living room, with it only transforming into a home cinema once in a blue moon, so we chose the colour based on what we liked the look of rather than what would be best for the projector setup. If I was doing a dedicated home cinema room, it would be different 😀
Once you have it all fully setup, you should tie in the hue lights to the watch apple tv activity to automatically dim or fully go off when you start it. That way it will be like a real cinema when the movie is about to start.
You read my mind! I'll be making PJ activities for Apple TV and Blu Ray, and for those I'll be tying in Hue. Great comment and hopefully I'll cover this in Part 8 😀
Need to get myself some of that stick on trunking soon, need to run a pair of hdmi feeds (i got 20m cables) an active usb run, and 2 240v runs and 2 cat6 runs, any you would reccomend tom?as currently i got it under the vinyl flooring and its VERY noticable :) Also James who bought your old airport extreme and express from me is very happy with them! Hope all is well Now to watch the rest of the video!
Glad James is happy with the AirPort kit! In terms of the trunking, sounds like you'll need something quite large to run all those cables, might be a good idea to go for 2 runs of smaller diameter trunking with the mains cabling in one and the signal cabling in the other? I'd definitely consult a sparky friend before taking any of my haphazard advice though. Also worth mentioning that once you get up to the bigger square stuff, screwing it on is much neater than using the adhesive. The adhesive has ripped loads of plaster off my walls, whereas filling little screw holes if you want to take it off one day is much easier.
Not ideal but you could mount that golden plug socket "upside down" for the time being. Avoids the issue with the base board for now. Or since you've now replaced it with white and its lower down, I'd still maybe go upside down for now. Of course that multiway does the job I suppose!
Tom, you need to get yourself a fish tape. They're like $20 US. Now my question is, why did you cut the cables? Why couldn't you just undo the patch behind the tv and pull all the cables back through? By the way, the B standard for RJ45 is the one that is used nationally. The A Standard is for phone. I started wiring everything in B, since that is what you'll see inside most businesses.
Hey Mark, good questions. 1. Fish tape is the boy, but sadly none to hand. 2. I cut the cabling as the 'quick and easy' option. Pulling back through from the TV end would've been a far bigger job. I'd have the soldered banana plug faceplate to contend with, as well as that cracked back box behind the network faceplate. Trunking is also very full and a complete pain in this area. 3. I've wired absolutely everything in the B standard for my home, but you may recall in a previous video, I accidentally wired the double CAT6 faceplate behind the TV in the A standard when I was very tired and rushing to get it done. Rather than redoing it, I've opted to leave it as it's in my home and I know it's there. If it was a business premises, I'd absolutely redo it of course. A lot of things I do come down to 'what's the quickest' - as I usually only have very small windows of time to get this sort of thing done. I try and balance between what's quick but also works well.
Awesome, been wanting to do this in my basement. Glad to see you realized one of your set up goals/dreams. Every time I save up for projector I decide to pick up a blu ray lot.
Awesome to have a basement to do this in. Maybe keep an eye on the used market? My first projector I actually bought in a car boot sale believe it or not, then this one came from eBay at a really good price.
You could have gone with a LG PH450UG which could sat up against the wall to projects onto the wall it is up against, only problem you will have to paint the screen area matt silver.
This was such a treat. awesome setup and projector. Will be watching this again just to show my SO. I look forward to your repair of your SB-3030's. I am now refoaming some new to me audiorama 8000's. And again, thanks for making this great funny and informative content. Happy holidays Tom!
Really glad you enjoyed 😀 Audiorama very very nice indeed. Such cool speakers. Never heard any in person, hopefully one day. Good luck with the refoam. Same to you my friend.
It's an Optoma HD70. It was a nice middle of the road home theatre choice for 2007-2008 era. It's a little less capable than an equivalent offering on the market today as it's only 720p and not as bright, but for a 13 year old bit of kit, it gives a gorgeous picture. Main reason I don't use it for primary use is because the room does ideally need to be completely dark to give a proper picture. Newer and more capable projectors can handle some daylight, but we watch TV during the day with the kids etc and it remains quite light in the room during the summer even way into the evening, so a TV is still needed for 'general use' - whereas the projector is there for movie nights.
I used a white wall previously and like you say, absolutely great. I'm looking to get a screen though because I don't want a big white rectangle permanently painted on my wall, also I need it to come in-front of the TV.
Your Network Conundrum could have been sorted by putting the broadband through the mains wiring using the high speed version of the TP-Link AV1000 Broadband Over Mains adapter.
I used poweline adapters for years with this setup, I must say going to a direct network drop was a lovely upgrade. Nothing wrong with powerline but a dedicated run will always be better.
I am not against the projector, but why a projector? I am aware you know 75inch 4k tvs exist. But yeah, the projector is kind of redundant. I am pleased to see an update all the same.
I think a 75inch 4k is probably out of most peoples price range? Great thing about a projector is you can spend just a couple hundred on eBay for a really decent used model, and get a HUGE bright picture for a fraction of the cost. Better still, when the kids throw toys at the screen, there's nothing to break 😀
@@ItsMyNaturalColour fair enough, I can understand what its like with kids, I have 4 of them. I just recently bought a 75inch for $1700 AU. It was $1000 off, but still a lot of money. That was a samsung 4k 75inch. I don't know how much tvs cost in the UK, but you can get a nice 55inch 4k tv for $600 AU if you don't mind going for a cheaper brand. But anyway, I've always enjoyed your videos Tom, this and the home network series have been great series to follow. So I hope you don't take what I said as a negative. Cheers
@@JoshOsRocks Not in any way taking it negatively, Josh. No worries there at all. I really appreciate it! And yes, you can get huge TVs for next to nothing here. Some of the Black Friday deals were crazy here this year. There was a 50 inch Toshiba TV in our local supermarket for £220, and a Sharp equivalent for not much more. Once the kiddies are a little older, we'll probably splash out on something big and new, but for now I'll continue to scour the used / free market.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour by then, we will be getting 8k tvs or something even more crazy. I look forward to when you might buy a new 88inch tv. A new TV would be a new instalment to this great series. Merry Christmas to you and your family mate.
haha laughing my head off at you pair when trying to measure that projector size, you both are hilarious together haha Where did you get your RJ45 couplers from? I bought a cheap set on Amazon and none work haha. Great new set up you have hear, much cleaner than before and I agree the white looks so much better than the gold on the sockets.
I definitely dig the Sonos kit!.. but for a setup like this, you can't beat a proper full size AV receiver and a big powerful 5.1 setup. I adore my 40 year old Technics SB3030 speakers. They sound great with all content, and also have the authenticity to sound lovely when you hook up turntable and listen to a record.
Hi, it was good to see another video. I wish you a Merry Christmas. I have a question. I was wondering if I had a bootable flash drive of High Sierra? If so could I pay you for a flash drive, your time, and the shipping cost. I have a 2011 macbook that I updated the ram and hard drive and now I cannot find High Sierra to put back on it. Thank you in advance.
I've got a cheap 90inch powered screen which is great for what it cost me. Think it was the duronic from amazon for about £80. Only ever used cheap von hous wall mounts for tvs and they've always been great
Just rewatched this and noticed at 1:59 there's a freaking arcade machine in the living room, please tell me you have a video on this or that you're planning one? Also is it a genuine oldschool arcade machine, or a custom made with a raspberry pi or something?
Arrhh man it's a nightmare. Don't think there's a way to turn it off on mine either. I've searched high and low through the menus. It would be a deal breaker for me buying it brand new, I would definitely take it back to the shop. Glad that TV era is behind us.
Plasma TVs don't have a backlight. It was probably ABL (Auto-Brightness Limiter) which lowers the brightness when displaying really bright content. Plasma TVs aren't made anymore but new OLED TVs still have the same thing
@@Pasi123 No, when there was a fade/cut to black in a film or whatever, it would turn the screen off entirely, then fade back in once there was a picture.
Haha yes!! I remember too! We changed our minds very quickly, and that was before we were a family of 5. Every minute of time is precious. We've actually on our second dishwasher already 😂 granted the first one was a mega cheap one and very small.
Very interesting video I like how your living room look. why did you cut the wires instead of pulling the wire back and giving it less point to fail. Keep up the good work
Thanks very much 😀 Mainly to get it done as quickly as possible. The speaker feeds are soldered to banana plug faceplates either end, so a bit of a pain to redo those. Also getting them run back through that gas box and over to the TV side would be a pain, so I decided one cut would be the easier option for now.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour At least in Singapore, I've been able to find light switches that have big levers, and I like those, as they're much easier to press. I'm not sure if you'd like them or if they're available in the UK, though. Here's an example: carousell.com/p/1024271379
@@kbhasi Ah ok cool I see! I just used standard switches. As you can see in the video, we have a Hue switch so that's the one that actually gets used. I changed them for aesthetic reasons.
Saw the notification and my crap day instantly became ok again 😄 anyone notice a lot of artifacting in the video? Also how’s the battery life in your 12 Mini Tom? I got it for my mum because she likes smaller phones and deciding if I should buy a regular 12 😁
Glad to hear it 😀 Battery life is absolutely great for me, I get a solid 2 days out of it so currently charging every other night. I'm not a crazy heavy user though, just average or maybe slightly less than average usage. Apologies for the video. The camera had a lot to contend with in this one... low light, alternating refresh rates of different LED light sources, and then the DLP projector which always makes the camera go a bit funky. I'll try and remember to bring some proper video lighting down when I do Part 8, at least for the long segments.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour Great stuff, if that’s out of the mini I’m sure the 12 would be great! I’m still rocking a 6s but the battery is a bit worse for wear. I’m saving up for after Christmas and I’m halfway there. And it’s no worries Tom I was just wondering if there was an issue with either final cut on Big Sur or the camera itself 😅
I would be the sort of person who prefers a large TV screen instead of a projector. I wouldn't have the time to set up a projector and I guess having a projector (unless it's laser or one of those LG LED short-throw thingies) would be less bright and offer less true black levels than an OLED TV screen. It's much worse when the focus (or sharpness level) is at the wrong level and I would have to adjust it. In movie theaters, there is a counterpart called the Samsung ONYX LED Screen, in which it offers true black levels, and by ditching the projection booth, would offer more seating capacity to an auditorium. I guess you're short on money because you chose to buy the projector instead of saving up for a 65-inch OLED. By the way, how much was the projector you got?
Thanks for the comment, James. I purchased this projector nearly 10 years ago on eBay for just under £200. It’s an older model. To address your comment, basically yea. I don’t aim for perfection and couldn’t afford it anyway, so I make the best with what I have and am very happy with the results.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour By the way, I'd say your setup would look great with a 65-inch OLED, but only time will tell if you've got the money. And what would your channel look like if you got straight to the point and there was less waffling?
love the video! hows your Harmony remote going for you, I got the same one as you not long after you did (because i seen it on your video) and i'm having problems with charging mine, just keeps saying the battery is fully charged after 5 to 10 minutes of been on charge, over then that it works great!
Sorry to hear that! I haven't noticed any problems like that with mine. For the most part mine is great, though the UI on the remote itself can sometimes get randomly extremely laggy! It's a great bit of kit though, definitely makes life easier and that only becomes more and more important as the number of devices grow.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour isn't the end of the world as a 10 minute charge will last most of the evening and yeah I get the lag now and again but doesn't bother me :)
me about to ask what the hell a gas box is (im in US), then tome says "gas meter", and im like, "wait, you mean to tell me, that in some parts of the UK, if not the whole, the gas meter is INSIDE the house? isnt that a GIANT GD safety hazard?"

I've got a cheap 90inch powered screen which is great for what it cost me. Think it was the duronic from amazon for about £80. Only ever used cheap von hous wall mounts for tvs and they've always been great
Nice one, Neck! I've seen those Duronic screens, they look perfect. Whatever's the cheapest one that fits, that's the one I'll be going for haha.
Just rewatched this and noticed at 1:59 there's a freaking arcade machine in the living room, please tell me you have a video on this or that you're planning one?
Also is it a genuine oldschool arcade machine, or a custom made with a raspberry pi or something?
It's been there for months or years, and I'd like to know about it too :P
Time to go 55" TV man... 40 inch is so 2007
But look forward to seeing the projector finished
😞
thanks man
I have a 40" but the room is tiny
I had a Samsung plasma TV did that silly backlight fading thing too... no way to get rid of it. early '10s had some of the worst TV trends I swear
17:59 I remember when you said that you were not going to buy a dishwasher in the rough early home tour video, apparently you changed your mind.
Haha yes!! I remember too!
We changed our minds very quickly, and that was before we were a family of 5. Every minute of time is precious. We've actually on our second dishwasher already 😂 granted the first one was a mega cheap one and very small.
Loving the content!
Thanks! 😀
Tom, I love this colour.
Thanks ! 😀
Just ditch the TV and mount a Christie Roadster 20K on the celling , at that throw it would be brighter than the SUN!
Good plan! 😂
I know this isnt at all relevant to this video but would you ever consider getting a 5,1 mac pro and running dual x5690s?
Love that colour on the walls, what's it's name, brand? 👍
Very interesting video I like how your living room look. why did you cut the wires instead of pulling the wire back and giving it less point to fail. Keep up the good work
Thanks very much 😀
Mainly to get it done as quickly as possible. The speaker feeds are soldered to banana plug faceplates either end, so a bit of a pain to redo those. Also getting them run back through that gas box and over to the TV side would be a pain, so I decided one cut would be the easier option for now.
Project to wall, bit of blu tack at each corner, then measure at your leisure!
🤯
This is one of the best things I've ever heard. Genius!
I have to wonder, with the light switch, why didn't you go for those ones that have large switches like what we have?
Not sure I understand the question?
@@ItsMyNaturalColour
At least in Singapore, I've been able to find light switches that have big levers, and I like those, as they're much easier to press.
Glad to hear it 😀
Battery life is absolutely great for me, I get a solid 2 days out of it so currently charging every other night.
Did I see an analog audio desk in the back of the video?
Yes, it was on eBay at the time of filming. Thankfully now sold and out of the way.
U can get a removable light pendant tom thats what i had on my old house for my projector
Seriously ? I had absolutely no idea!
@@JamesTaylorMain Probably wouldn't be a channel if I didn't waffle. I like to be the real me, and this is me.
Are you planning to get a m1 Mac Mini?
I would of done for the projector screen would be 80 inch one
Never clicked on a new vid so quick 😂
love the video! hows your Harmony remote going for you, I got the same one as you not long after you did (because i seen it on your video) and i'm having problems with charging mine, just keeps saying the battery is fully charged after 5 to 10 minutes of been on charge, over then that it works great!
Cool
me about to ask what the hell a gas box is (im in US), then tome says "gas meter", and im like, "wait, you mean to tell me, that in some parts of the UK, if not the whole, the gas meter is INSIDE the house? isnt that a GIANT GD safety hazard?"
As far as I know, the gas meters are outside on all newly built homes.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour ok, im hoping that the case.
How do you get that animated city scape on your TV?
It’s the default Apple TV screensaver.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour Thanks! I wonder if I could get Fedora Linux to display something like that. I use a Linux rig on my TV instead of an Apple TV or the like.
@@ericwood3709 Bet you could! I'm a complete Linux noob but there's probably a couple of options to get something similar up and running.
33:45 we know Tom! That’s why you have 3 kids ;)
😏
Hi Tom, I like your TV cabinet, where was that from?
It’s from IKEA. It’s absolutely fantastic. Have a look at this series playlist , I build it at some point, maybe part 5 or 6.
@@ItsMyNaturalColour Thanks Tom, I found it, good price too 🙂
