You can make free rooting hormone from cut twigs of any willow tree that you soak in water. When they start to sprout roots, it's ready. Willow was used to make aspirin, so it is also an antiseptic. The hormone is in water, so you can immerse the seedlings in it or water it. I hope that this ancient knowledge of gardener from Poland (Central Europe) will be useful.
We use honey in Australia for rooting cuttings. They say not to dip cuttings straight in the container of rooting powder but to empty some in a small lid to prevent contamination of the main container of powder.
We in Europe too, but now honey is very expensive and willow branches are free. I believe that we need to use what is currently most available and does not generate additional costs. Best regards from Poland, you have great gardening education and wonderful native plants. I watch "Gardening Australia".
You could do two cuttings (or even more as leaf cuttings) from those cuttings you took! I’m propagating lots of dahlias also this year - good luck to both of us!!
I did the same thing a few weeks ago, a few of mine were looking pretty shrivelled and it’s always awesome to see how fast they bounce back. I just barely moistened the soil and kept them in the cool so they wouldn’t sprout too soon. For next time, it actually works a bit better if you keep the bottom of the stem (closest to the tuber) and snip the top off.
Real green fingers!!! Those cuttings look extremely healthy! Wish I had more space.... sometimes lol! Keep forgetting that I dont have the energy that more space requires anymore 😂
I buy vermiculite that's used as insulation and is sold in large bags at big box stores. It's only a fraction of the price. The brand I Source actually makes Vermiculite for planting as well. I've used this for 4 years with no issues
Yeah Nicole, my tubers look a lot like yours did prior to putting them in to sprouting! So now I have hope that all is not lost! I definitely would prefer to use cuttings and have the opportunity to have more plants without having them rot because the tubers are diseased! 👍🏼👍🏼
Hello , how long did the shriveled tubers sit under the light and heat ? Is the light necessary at the beginning? I just put mine in moist soil with a dome . They are in the basement and my basement is warm . So is light right away necessary and the heat pad? Or do u put them under the light after u see some growth? Thanks Update : i got mold on my tubers 😞😞😞😞 what to do?
Many thanks for the white anemone corms, arrived today! Rain to start up again here Wednesday for the next 5 days. Will have a mini project to do as all the ranunculus have been growing at various heights here in z9b/Sunset z17 SF Bay Area.
Will these bloom this year since you are starting them so early? I would like to start a dahlia collection and this would be a fun way to beef up my numbers quickly.
Hi Nicole, 🖐🏾 so when you take cuttings are the tubers still plantable for that season. Like will you be able to plant the tubers and they will resprout as well …thanks.
Your dogs play fighting sounds like the Tasmanian Devil! I didn’t finish putting all my dahlias in grocery bags with pine shavings, and I didn’t get all the dirt off all the tubers last fall, it got so cold so fast, my tubers look good, but I wonder should I take them outside (39 degrees) and spray them, divide and dry on a rack with the fan drying them off? I’m going to start some like you are doing. I love this video.
Ooh, I'll have to try this with my pathetic little wrinkly haul of dahlia tubers. I watched a RUclips video where they sliced a really tiny bit of the tuber off with the sprout. I don't know if it makes any difference. It seems like, with your way, you can maybe get another cutting from the same spot if it regrows. So, can you pot up the mother tubers later in the spring, and later plant them outside?
hey everyone, question for a newbie...its almost june, in western MA, I just planted my dahlias and now learning about pinching...can i pinch and them plant the cutting back into the garden or do they need to go into a dome? also how short can one cut to pinch bc i'm realizing I prob should have done this sooner as they are tall and stringy
Cinnamon powder is great for cuttings! Pour a spoonful onto a paper towel and roll damp stem ends in the cinnamon. Plant the stems in fresh potting soil. The cinnamon will encourage the stem to produce more roots, while helping to prevent the fungus that causes damping-off disease
@@NicolesGardenNS it's not a myth. Cinnamon is a natural anti-fungal. There even have been studies done about it (not experiments but real actual studies. Anti fungal properties are so good, that they are testing it to treat candida etc.) If one rather uses chemical stuf, that is a personal choice. I love it when there is a good natural alternative. There are several flower farmers that switched for that reason to cinnamon and love it.
A quick google search...so you should get flowers the first year? Definitely a great way to produce more tubers. Question: Since you took a cutting from the tuber, is that tuber done? I suppose if it had more than one eye, maybe you will get another shoot. This is fascinating. Looking forward to the results.
After a few cuttings the tuber is usually too weak to perform that summer. Yes you will get flowers from the cuttings. Yes they will grow tubers this year too.
Greetings from Ukraine! Nicole, please answer the question about the device that turned your shed into a cooler. Who is the manufacturer and where can you buy it? I have friends in the USA who can buy it and bring it to me. I really like watching your videos. Your bouquets are beautiful. Thank you for them. Sorry for my English. Sincerely, Larisa
I pre-sprout my dahlia tubers in shallow trays so that I don't end up potting the duds. You would be surprised at how much life there can be left in a wizened-up dahlia tuber -- don't assume it's dead unless it literally crumbles between your fingers or is mushy. I am going to try taking some cuttings although I have to admit that I have no shortage of dahlias :)
Can I ask why you cut and root rather than just planting the tubers in pots indoors til it's time to put outside? Thanks! I left mine in pots for a season and then left them in the pots in our greenhouse over the winter. I have no idea if they are still viable so was going to bring them in the propogation room and see if they bud but maybe I should be considering this route????
I don't wash the domes typically. The trays are hand washed like any other one. I usually wash them as needed. I try to do my best to clean them out after using them so the wash isn't as intense.
I put my trays in the dishwasher after knocking off loose dirt. I did test one first to make sure it wouldn't melt since plastics differ. Mine are from Gardener's Supply. I think the domes would probably melt so I haven't tried those. I generally don't wash the domes if all I have used them for is covering things (sometimes they are called into service as trays).
Also I got into a sourdough kick that was short lived and now I use the bendable scoring blade to take cuttings and slice a wee bit of the tuber with it. They root without hormone and grew BEAuuutifully last year!
Blooper passed away on Earth Day, 2022. She had cancer and a heart condition. :( She was 11. I never really talked about it on camera because it was difficult.
I REALLY want to TRY growing Ranunculus again, last last two tries were a fail. Second try turned out much better than the first, but I don’t want to spend a lot of $$ and then have then not grow. I have to live on SS so any money spent has to have a good reason to spend it and if I can’t get them to successfully bloom again it’s like flushing money down the toilet. I saw the blooms on a Ranunculus many many years ago and I fell in love with them. It surreal to me how they can have so many papery petals and be so stunning. I have the time now to take care of them but unfortunately they’re a flowering plant that just don’t like me. Maybe, just maybe I can find them somewhere and I can bite the bullet for a last TRY. 🤞🏻❄️🫠💚🙃 P.S. anyone reading this please make sure you are saving enough money for retirement, don’t count on the government to take care of you with the money they were supposed to keep for you until you retired.. If you're lucky, maybe a big box store or Walmart or Big Lots will have a mixed bag you can try with. How have you normally tried starting them? Do you soak the corms first? It also takes some patience. And sometimes, sprouting happens differently from one person to the next. I soak mine for 3-4 hours, and I change the water every hour. I have a flat bottom tray ready filled halfway with seed starting mix, damp, but not drenched. Place the corms octopus tentacles down, then cover lightly with more seed starting mix. Leave your tray in a cool dark place until you see sprouts. Only lightly water the mix of it's drying out. Plan on losing a few, but you should be able to get some growing! I have faith in you!

I know someone in Canada that uses willow branches in a bucket of water for starting cuttings, I forgot about it until you mentioned it!
Good to know.
Neat-o knowledge! Thanks!

10 days in my garage Z8 South Carolina. Never grown them before. Very excited!

I have never purchased tubers, but did grow them from seed. I guess I have tubers now. 😂 my zone is 7bNC.
I saved the plastic boxes my Christmas ornaments came in and now I’m using them as humidity domes 😅
Have you posted a follow up video on how the cuttings are doing?
just realized my dahlia bulb is growing in my basement, thinking about snipping bc weak bc no light. Will do that tomorrow!
I thought You needed «the eye» for the dahlia cuttings to root , this will be really interesting to follow!
Great idea I almost forgot, getting mine out today. Thx Nichole 😁

Yes I bought a huge bag of vermiculite from our florist for 40$ this thing is the size of a straw bale. But I use so much and am A Frugal person.
They are adorable!

Cutting just below a node helps.

What is the best way to store the tubers?
Thank you Nicole. ❄️🫠💚🙃

Those huge tubers in the tray, how many quorms are planted there? I bought one bag. Never did this before.

Will the dahlias continue you to produce cuttings? Or do they have to have an eye? If you left an eye will it produce again?
After you put the tubers in soil, what did you do with them? Lights? Heat? What was the air temp? Do tell!
It’s necessary to snip the new leafs?

It doesnt have IBA and auxins into it

What did you do to rejuvenate your shriveled dahlia tubers? Did you just place them in moistened soil?
Correct!
(With a humidity dome on a heat mat)

Shouldnt had at least 1 node to be in soil to root?
Check for a water mister on your basement canned sauce table unless that is the broken one.

I think she said the cuttings will make more tubers for her.
You double your amount of tubers by cuttings..
Cuttings produce better size and color than the parent plant.
i taught you needed part of the tuber on the rooting?
Did you soak your tubers before starting them in soil?
No
