Why Hamza Yusuf Chose Islam

Hamza Yusuf unpacks the universality of Islam on several levels: as a continuity of Christianity, in music, literature, and architecture, as a scholarly subject, redemptive outlet for matadero-murderers, &c.
Dr. Peterson points these out as opportunities to focus on commonalities, rather than the "things disintegrating our culture."

@nepa lion A strange comment for a supposedly true Christian. No finite human, even Jordan Peterson, guides infinite God almighty. With more knowledge about Islam and wisdom, Jordan who I truly admire, would not have allowed Hamza Yusuf the latitude he did to make the absurd and dishonest claims about Islam that he did. Yusuf was allowed to make claims that it amounted to it appearing that Islam is superior in almost every respect to Christianity and Judaism. This happens to be arrogant and pure nonsense. Never did Islam ever create the great civilization that came about in Europe in the form of Western civilization with its education, art, sculpture and music. Islam spent hundreds of years conquering and fighting and being barbaricly cruel, and yet in the end it got thoroughly beaten by European armies, the Ottoman Empire collapsed, was reduced to 'the poor man of Europe', retreated into Turkey's borders and then murdered at least 2 million Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians in what is known as the Armenian genocide This, dsespite al, the evidence, Turkey denies and lies. That is Islam, not the rubbish served up by Hamza Yusuf.

I embraced Islam as a white American, a soldier, a patriot and a former Christian…and have never looked back.
The Natural religion of Man. It’s in our chromosomes. Everything feels natural to my quintessence in this religion; the belief in a unitary God, his Angels, his Books, his Messengers, the Last Day, the mode and times of prayer, the fasting, the Hajj, the witnessing over Mankind, the chivalrous development of character, the relationship between Man and Woman, the importance of family and society, the patriarchy, the warrior ethos, the defense of the downtrodden, the Charity, the importance of seeking Knowledge, the melodious and sublime song of the universe, the Qur’an… and the love of that beautiful, precious man, Muhammad ﷺ who endured everything to bring it to realization. I invite my brothers and sisters in Humanity to enter Islam, throw off their mental shackles and find complete, coherent, self-reinforcing and all-encompassing Meaning. ☝🏻

*I wonder daily what a miserable beggar I would be if God did not chose me to accept Islam. I think it also, depends on one's character. For some strange reason I always felt That I am not important (even though I was excelling in school & grad school while girls were running after me, yet kept my virginity. So, I completely understand when Sheikh Hamza said that God chose him Islam. I felt same. It is like PURE LOVE. One cannot put a medal or price on it. It is not an achievement. It is just "BE" and it came to exist! I think Muslim scholars call it "KUN FA-YAKUNU" = BE, and it is". Tears will pour down when this happens from the depth of ones heart*
*The feeling is a bit like the day that I was officially awarded the PhD after 10 years (NAv, MSc, MBA, & PhD). But, after PhD if the job is boring then it is the end of that happiness. But if this PhD will be a strong shield against all vile attacks, misery, poverty, abuse, oppression...all bad on earth then it is equal to SHAHADA (equal to the happiest PhD on earth!). Then there is sip much one can focus on learning from Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, other profound scholars, from the honest Muslim Janitor who never misses his 5 daily prayer, the happy Muslim cook at the nursing home who praises Allah/God while no one at work does & brings joy to the old patients. These are fragrant scattered beautiful flowers like SOULS that practices Islam for SAKE OF GOD's pleasure. To please God/Allah SWT. In pleasing God one pleases self. Simple, yet profound*

Dr. Yusuf summed it up nicely: there's anything/everything for everyone in Islam, whatever answers you are seeking, you get Divine guidance in Quran. For example some of the most bitter confusing divisive social legal arguments like Abortion, Capital Punishment, Property rights & disputes, Sexual behavior, marital rights...ALL guided. So one has to wonder HOW is it possible that guidance preserved 1439 years ago could address those issues? Abortion for instance, there was no concept of contraception outside of a mild reference in Egypt of an ancient practice of contraception with "goat bladder skin" and female hygiene was universally on a prehistoric level. Islam was way...way ahead of it's time, nearly Cosmically in a different time dimension. Divine guidance settled it for humanity for ages to come.

If you study Islam, you will see how ridiculously backwards it is.
      Muhammad:
      1. Married a six year old and raped her at 9 after she had her very first period.
      2. Had slaves, including sex slaves which he raped.
      3. Waged offensive wars on far away tribes that refused to follow him and make him their prophet/king.
      4. Repressed women and treated them as second class citizens.
      5. Killed people for simply not believing. This is still the punishment for apostasy til this day.
The only reason this guy isn’t still Christian is because he wasn’t really Christian. He was raised in a mostly secular Christian household that didn’t study Christianity. He’s also a scummy elitist. He acts like Islamic poetry, philosophy, and architecture is superior and makes Islam better than Christianity. He’s straight up calling Christians godless idiots. He’s a radical bigot, there are whole compilations of him saying horribly backwards stuff.

I suggest you explore the history of Islam. The Koran, or maybe a better term, the proto-Koran, was written as a Christian lectionary.
bear in mind that the supposed caliph of Islam, Mu'awiya, was still writing inscriptions bearing the cross
and the supposed caliph of Islam, Abd al Malik, minted coins with the menorah!
also bear in mind that Islam is a one way street, leaving it is punishable by death,
not to mention that as a woman your word and intelligence count half that of a man's, you need to wear the veil, inherit half as much as your brother and if married to a Muslim, he can beat you (within certain limits) if you disobey him.
      good luck :)

Exactly right: Islam confirms all the prophets that came to pass and continued their doctrine of strict monotheism with the utmost clarity. It vindicated 1000s of years old Jewish tradition, corrected the blasphemous trinitarian dogma of Christianity, established Jesus as the rightful Messiah and confirmed His second coming. To answer Jordan's question about why Muhammad came after Jesus; Jesus rescued monotheism from the tribal monopoly of Jews, however later Christians took the doctrine out of its monotheistic roots. Finally Muhammad came to establish the truth once and for all for all the nations/gentiles of the earth. Jesus needs to return to complete his own mission, to speak Islamic monotheism and spirituality to the very materialistic society at the end times.

I have a question for those who say don't judge Islam by Muslims.
Wouldn't that practically apply to any idea?
Any religion/idea (especially those that garner the attention of millions/billions) seen through the lense of someone who follows it would look attractive, they follow it for a reason.
Communism on paper is a great idea, but when it was applied it failed miserably, yet some people still think that it failed because it wasn't applied right.
Shouldn't that be exactly what we do, judge ideas (no matter how perfect they are on paper) by the results of applying those ideas?

    • @Golden_M.Y.
      @Golden_M.Y. 2 года назад

Its funny that u think islam has failed practically. Look at the Islamic golden age when the Islamic empire was prevalent, Jews and Christians were living better than theyre living now under the protection of the Islamic empire. Everyone was allowed to practice their religion peacefully. The shit happening now is because of political and economic wars launched by the U.S. on the middle east.

How about we focus on the 21st century?
There were many civilizations in the past, should we go back to the golden age of the Jewish kingdom, Mesopotamia, anicent Egypt, ancient Persia, ancient Greek, ancient Rome too? And live according to their religions?
Why did the Islamic civilization decline if Islam is perfect for all time?
"Jews and christians were living better than theyre living now under the protection of the islamic empire"
How do you know that? Was there a survey of all the Jews and christians, and how do you even compare living in the 9th-12th century, to NOW? And where now?
Why did the Islam not spread in Europe if it is perfect for all places?
So most of what's wrong with the Middle East is the fault of the US, and doesn't have much to do with the culture and religion of the people?
So why are the people with the perfect system victimized by the people with the less perfect system?

Do you judge Christianity by those Christians who have no knowledge about Bible, nor they practice their religion?
In today's world, most of the christians & muslims are non religious and that's why we discourage to judge the religions by mass namesake followers.
Islam has very clear ruling system called Khilafah. Islamic rulings has direct impact on everybody living under it's ruling. Without Khilafah Islam can't be practiced completely and muslims can't be grow well.
In western society, muslim & christian kids are being taught fake evolution theory and filthy liberal values in schools. So how can they be religious?
Elites are spending billions to make people non religious. They are spending billions on movies and medias. Creating rules to check religions. Killing scholars in the name of terrorism. These hamper the growth of both muslim and christians. In many case, those muslims and christians has nothing with their religions except only name.
Therefore, without ruling power or Khilafah, Islam is incomplete and we shouldn't judge the religion by it's mass followers.

If any group of people follow an idea and they are not doing so well, yes I will judge that idea. Like I said many ideas are good in theory but not in practice.
I agree that in today's world most people are not religious, in fact I would say that Muslims are the most religious in the world, even though the majority of them don't know much about their religion, they still adhere to it superficially and are emotionally attached to it.
You think that people are not religious anymore because of elites, I will ask you, why do you think these elites have the power and resources that they do and not the religious people? Did something go wrong and what was it?
Why isn't there a khalifa anymore and hasn't been there for centuries?
Again you can argue for conditions for an idea to work, but if it hasn't worked then it is only an ideal in the minds of those who hold it.

      @siyovushm2317 2 года назад

Fair enough, but you need to get a good grasp on the actual sociological realities of Muslims, which many people don't while assuming they do. Do a fair analysis and *study* what is the cause of an economic decline or some examples of political instability, and don't just follow popularized simplistic narratives. And lastly, being correct doesn't necessarily mean you will always be rich and successful at all times without any downs whatsoever. Sometimes you will remain principled, unlike some other people, and it may cost you to temporarily lose your comfortable position. In fact, the best way to test the adherents of an idea is during the crisis, because it's easy to follow an ideology when its adherents are considered successful (case in point: liberalism, which many people adopt just because the west is rich, and not for any other reason). If you can maintain your principles despite the ups and downs, and stay committed to them, then it's a testimony to the power of those principles. Islam has the biggest level of negative PR, yet it's still going strong.

One doesn’t choose a god because it fits one’s lifestyle. A god isn’t an accessory. There is only one true living and loving God and creator. We all have free will to choose the path we walk in life. People choose man made religion and even modified Christianity to fit their lifestyle. A true spiritual Christian listens and follows Almighty Father God/Jesus Christ/Yeshua Hamashiach/Holy Spirit. God knows everyone’s heart. People from different geographical locations that express lovingkindness to others, are humble and follow God’s ways without claiming to be Christians or any other religion are actually true Christians. God is love. If you have helped the less fortunate, you have helped God. Man gives spiritual love religious names to categorize and or establish methods for a functioning society/regions. We all worship in different ways but there is only one true God. ✝️ Jordan is correct, humanity needs to focus on our commonalities and less on hating and judging because no one is good but God. Then learn about them invading Afghanistan where they killed all the Hindus and in India murdered between 81 million and 90 million Indians, in the process wiping out Buddhism in India. The Carthaginians regarded the Muslims the cruelest people they ever fought. Thank goodness Europe eventually woke up, the Normans reclaimed Sicily, and a Crusader army led by Polish king, Jan Sobieski, smashed the Ottoman Muslims outside Vienna in 1683 and eventually Prince Eugene who led the Austrian Holy Roman Empire army drove them with their cruelty out of south-east Europe.

@@Mym794 The Koran of today is not the Koran of the 600s. There were additions and omissions to it.
Additions and omissions between the Koran of the 600s (let's call it proto Koran) and today's Koran should not be surprising because even the hadiths of Bukhari for example (which in any case are irrelevant because hadiths even if sahih are to be taken with a grain of salt if one is searching for historical evidence of Muhammed's time) speak about it.
Check out Thomas Alexander, Pfander Films and Origins for a much longer and in depth explanation. But to cut a long story short, when one studies the earliest manuscripts of the Koran one notices edits that were later done to them. Also the dark passages of the Koran, those that the Islamic scholars say no one knows what they mean, can be explained if one has knowledge of Aramaic. Christoph Luxemberg did a lot of work in this field.
If I remember correctly it was Gunter Luling who found Syriac hyms embedded in the Koran, which gave Luxemberg the curiosity to study the matter deeper.
Secondly not all Christians belief in the Trinity, some heretical sects don't.
Thirdly, the Alawites, a Shia sect, have a kind of Trinity, that of Ali, Muhammed and Allah.

Averroes was called the atheist philosopher just because he used logic. He was mistreated and ostracized which was actually a good outcome for people like him, most were tortured and killed. So this guy now is adopting averroes? I don't understand the hypocrisy and double faced treatment.
Also, most most Islamic philosophers were killed , excommunicated etc etc
What does architecture has to do with anything? Muslims stole from zoroastrian persians and roman pagans/Christians.
Western Europeans learned from knowledge transmitted through Muslims from Greeks and romans and added to. But this knowledge and philosophy is denounced in Islam and its purveyors are frequently excommunicated as heretics and apostates and killed.
The rest of these arguments are all sorts of logical fallacies from false correlations etc

    • @wrongin8992
      @wrongin8992 2 года назад +2

You confidently call his "arguments" fallacious, and yet you didn't even understand his points, he mentioned 2 things
      - Islam is the only religion for someone who has a philosophical baggage can accept
      - Islam is a very universal religion, has a very simple theology and you can find whatever you're looking for in it
The architecture, the music, the poetry that he mentioned are just examples on how universal the religion is, you can be a muslim and excel in architecture, you can be a muslim and excel in science, you can be a muslim and live your life as a poet, and they excel to a degree that even people from other faith tradition value their work (that's the point, not stealing this stealing that, he literally didn't say anything about stealing, the word stealing only came up from the book title that he mentioned "Stealing from the Saracens"), and thats not to say that other religions don't facilitate this as well, but Islam through its simple theology encourages you to do these positive and beneficial stuffs. If you watch the whole podcast, he said that the first thing that brought him to Islam was the Islamic take on life after death, on what happens after you die, he found islamic take on it more convincing that any other religions' take, this clip is after they talked about life after death, so he didn't mention it again, and he's got limited time, there's no way he's going to mention everything that convinced him that Islam is the truth.
And for your comment about averroes and philosophy in Islam, you're literally generalizing muslims and blaming islam for the actions of muslims, the history was more complicated that than, but ill give you the benefit of the doubt, lets take the premise that philosophers were prosecuted in the islamic golden age, ok, then answer this question, "what was the reason of the prosecution?", from the tone of your comment, i assume that you hate islam already, so you'll probably say "Islam was the reason", ok, then answer this question "The prosecuted philosophers, were they muslims? if yes then what motivates them to learn philosophy in the first place?", you'll probably not attribute their motivation to Islam, but think about it rationally, Why would they call themselves Islamic philosophers? why would they always bring up the topic of Islam in their discussion (if you actually read the work of avicenna and averroes you'd know this) ? clearly they cared about Islam, if thats the case then it is not far fetched to assume that their motivation to learn philosophy was Islam in the first place, so what's going on here? A group was prosecuting philosophers because of Islam, but the philosophers were learning philosophy because of Islam, so who's in the right here?
Thats the problem with your comment, you're generalizing muslims and blaming islam for the actions of muslims, a person with cult mentality will create a cult from something no matter what kind of ideology or religion they follow, if its true that there was an excessive amount of prosecution towards islamic philosophers, then the muslims at that time were at fault, not Islam.
Ill end this with a tradition from the prophet : "The word of wisdom is the lost property of the believer. Wherever he finds it, he is most deserving of it"

lets learn something today. Educate yourself first before you speak and if you are truthful and sincere read all the evidence in its entirety and complete so that you understand the topic it doesn't matter what is it give it his right. Dont play games be fair!
Have you read the Quran? Becouse it says: Whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve, and There is no compulsion in religion. So how do you understand the hadith about apostasy? because the Quran prohibits compulsion in religion as a general rule? I will keep it as short as possible.
In the time of early Muslim community, it were understood not as meaning a personal choice of changing one’s religion but as the public act of political secession from the Muslim community.
      1. Minor apostasy is when a person embraces Islam while knowing its virtues and later rejects it. There is no legal punishment for the minor apostate as long as they do not try to physically harm the Muslim community.
      2. Major apostasy is when a person embraces Islam while knowing its virtues and later rejects it and adds to this a call for violent rebellion against the Muslim authorities. Such a crime is equivalent to high treason and in its most severe case can carry the death penalty as an act of self-defense for the community.
Allah said: Verily, those who believed and then disbelieved, then believed and then disbelieved and increased in disbelief, never will Allah forgive them nor will He guide them to a right way. Surah An-Nisa 4:137
In this verse, Allah describes a person who apostates from Islam twice and He does not prescribe legal punishment for him, but rather He only warns the apostate about severe punishment in the Hereafter. This demonstrates that the general rule is an apostate should be left alone, as the Quran prohibits compulsion in religion.
Allah said: There is no compulsion in religion. The truth is distinct from misguidance. Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256
And He said: Say: The truth is from your Lord. So whoever wills let him believe, and whoever wills let him disbelieve. Surah Al-Kahf 18:29
Legal punishment is only applied to a person who combines apostasy with high treason. This is because the Quran prohibits compulsion in religion as a general rule and because the believers should be the most restrained of the people when it comes to taking life.
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, ﷺ said: The most restrained of the people regarding killing are the people of faith. Source: Musnad Ahmad 3720, Grade: Sahih
When one of the Companions, ʿUbaydallāh bin Jaḥsh left Islam and became Christian while the Muslims were seeking refuge in Ethiopia, the Prophet ﷺ did not order him to be punished. The Treaty of Ḥudaybiyya, which the Prophet ﷺ concluded with the Quraysh, stated that if anyone decided to leave the Muslim community in Medina no harm would befall them. There was no mention of a punishment for apostasy. In fact, when a man who had come to the Prophet ﷺ just the day before to pledge his loyalty to Islam wanted to be released from his oath, the Prophet ﷺ let him go.
Imam al-Shāfiʿī himself notes how, during the Prophet ﷺ’s time in Medina, “Some people believed and then apostatized. Then they again took on the outer trappings of faith. But the Messenger of God did not kill them.”
Yes we find that there are certain narrations that are sometimes ambiguous and are at times understood as supporting the death penalty for apostasy. For example, there is a hadith which states, ‘kill him who changes his faith’, and another which states, ‘kill him who leaves his faith and separates himself from the community’. Being a tertiary source of Islamic knowledge, these ahadith cannot be understood in a way which run counter to the Qur’an.
Historically, these ahadith were stated during the time of religious, theological war between the Muslims and the non-believers before the signing of the treaty of Hudaibiya. Leaving Islam and the community of Muslims during this time was tantamount to abandonment of the army and was considered high treason during war, which was (and even today, in many cases still is) punishable by death. Outside the years of this religious war, the Sunnah of the Prophet (sa) demonstrates that apostates were not killed.
There are many more examples but i leave it like this!
In conclusion, the death penalty for apostasy is restricted by the Prophet’s other statements and actions which make clear that this punishment applies only to those who commit high treason against the Muslim community.
      Allah knows best.

In the Quran theres a chapter called Mary (Maryam in arabic) where the angel came and blew the spirit of jesus in the virgin Mary. Is that the same way jesus was conceived in the bible? Just trying to figure out how God became the father from being a creator and where the 2 religions differ.
Also Jesus was middle eastern why is he always looking European white and same with Mary.

[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, " Our Lord is God " And were it not that God checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of God is much mentioned. And God will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, God is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

The way I think about religion, well, I've studied the stuffing out of them, Abrahamic that is... Well, I think pick one. But then live it all the way, whichever one. Jump in with both feet and don't look back.

    • @TraxisOnTheLines
      @TraxisOnTheLines 2 года назад

This is interesting to me. If you can just "pick one and live it", then none of them can be 'correct', right? And if none of them are correct, why would you devote your life to something incorrect? You might say "the existence of god does not define religion, and living through the teachings of the book(s) will make you a better person with better morals and a healthier life", but that's definitely false considering how many religious people take it to the extremes and use religion to cause more harm. One can also be atheist, and live a charitable, helpful life, doing the best they can to help and not to harm, doing what they can do provide for the world and not take - and they'll be ridiculed or attacked by religious people for not believing in something.
Religion is not something we need, it's something we were told we need, and many people believe it.

This guy is a religious nut. He’s seriously trying to claim Islam has the best poetry, architecture, music, and philosophy. Then he tries to prove it by mentioning structures that were heavily influenced by Christian buildings such as the Hagia Sofia, Islamic philosophers that were influenced by Christian philosophers (which Islam basically plagiarized word for word), and Islamic music that is a direct descendent of Christian music (Byzantine music).
Of course Islamic art is beautiful, but it’s ridiculous to say it’s the most beautiful and that makes Islam superior to other faiths.

Pardon my candour, but Hamza Yusuuf talks so much nonsense about Islam that it is hardly worth taking seriously. Of corse Islam was in Spain for centuries after invading in 711AD - without an invitation. And they were horribly cruel while there. And Islam was in south-eastern Europe after the Ottoman Empire invaded, it getting kicked out only after the smashing defeat to a Crusader army outside Vienna in 1683. Listening to Yusuf you'd think that Islam entered south-eastern Europe on a missionary campaign and that they were welcomed They were not and were, as ever, horribly cruel.

His whole speech is a bunch of platitudes. He really says that Islam must be true just because its theology is (allegedly) simple 🤦‍♂ Moreover, he refers to Averroes (Ibn Rushd), a medieval philosopher, as a Muslim hero, although it was the strict Muslims who blamed him to be a heretic which led him to flee to Christian countries (he valued philosophy higher than the Quran!). It's always funny how Muslim propagandists make use of prominent Muslims even then when they totally disagree with the official religion.

1:50 -- another historical fallacy. No more than 10% of the ancient knowledge was transmitted from the Islamic sources. The majority of the preserved materials were kept thanks to the Church institutions, including many architectural monuments, spared from destruction for building material. The most influential, by volume, culture in medieval Europe was the Eastern Roman Empire.
