Do you guys think that Bowtech went so hard at them because Athens might have been more willing to license the tech to other brands? If Bowtech refused to license because it was their competitive advantage, why would they let a company that might be willing to license live?

I was about to pull the trigger on the Athens. I had a chance to pull back on the Axxis 31 and 33 and really liked how it felt and shot. But, as MFJJ said, I read about the law suite and was reluctant to buy. I have buyers remorse on almost everything I purchase (thanks to my ex wife). I now take my time on EVERY purchase I make. Im glad I took my time on this. I would hate to have spent 1200 bucks only to have a great bow that I would eventually not been able to support or resell. Now Im looking at the BT Core SS to replace my BT Solution.

Besides the company going under and shops getting shafted; I think the sad part about this is that it seemed to have been an improvement on the technology over the Bowtech system. But because how it was handled, it wasn't able to continue to push that tech forward for the benefit of the end user.

I bought a brand new Axxis 31 for 800$ out the door, and it shoots great. Now I've got a 1200$ bow for my back-up. It's as fast as the Core SS and a lot smoother. Basically, I got a Core SS for $800

25:21 i picked up an Elevate for 575 with them going out. Hate to see it happen, but I always wanted to try one and no i have. Its an amazing bow. Makes it me sad they had to close doors. Doible edge sword. Ive never had to warranty a bow. So hopefully that continues with them closed. At the price i got it though, mo worse than buying a used non-warranty bow.

Do you think the patents and the threat of litigation slow the development of new technologies in compounds? If you start looking at the patents just about every part is patented.

Overall I agree with the take on Athens, but one thing that was mentioned was Bowtech and Kyle Douglas. From the interviews with Kyle I have heard, particularly on the Bowjunky podcast, Bowtech forgot to add that clause and still terminated anyway. Kyle didn’t seem to want to deal with the headache of the legal process. Tim did have that clause, so your point there stands.

You are very correct. It feels like Athens got some really bad legal advice though, it doesn’t matter that one attorney says it’s 10% different. It’s do you have the money to take a lawsuit to trial? and will a judge or jury likely find you to be greater than 10% different? If the answer to both those questions isn’t a strong yes… they made a very illogical and risky choice

I watched the Jim corner files and he died a little over a year and a half ago now and just watching everything but knowing that he's gone and then they didn't say anything about it because it was made before he died. Athens ownership should have called Matt McPherson or Hoyt ownership and said , hey you help fund our legal fight and defend our patent then we grant you an exclusive license to our technology for 10 years. Now Hoyt or Mathews takes the only real marketable technological advantage from bowtech and eats their lunch on sales!!

I disagree that Athens should have called and talked to Bowtech first. From a business perspective the last thing you want to do it tip off your completion that you're taking a run at them. Having a conversation would be completely worthless as either side can say what every they want but can then turn around and do what ever they want which could be completely different than what was discussed. It's business and business is rough.

Patents are only as good as the money in your pocket. I talked to a VP of a company one time about getting a patent. He told me not to bother. Their company is a multimillion dollar company and 3M copies their designs but they can’t afford to drag out a lawsuit against a company that size.

The way they acted like it was business as usual until it wasn't,... that's a problem for me. The bows are great bows. I love my peak 38 so much. It makes me mad and upset and just annoyed over all this. I hate it. They basically tanked there company over shims.. freaking shims man. After all the videos and all the podcasts they went on this year.. they look like the biggest ass holes in the archery world. And no one will ever deal with them again. Mountain view got bought out by Sirius archery. Will be interesting to see what they do with the quivers and maybe something else from them.

It sucks that athens is gone. However, their bows are still a tier 1 bow, and the tech is there! They're still holding at value, and you shouldn't be worried about warranty issues unless you plan to dry fire your bow! They're still an excellent bow that will last. If you care for it, like a bow should be.

MFJJ, I disagree about you saying others like Hoyt would have sued the pants off of them too. At least Hoyt licenses their pic rail mount. Bowtech purposely intended to squeeze the little guy out over technology every bow should have. It's ridiculous, and at the end of the day, the consumer loses due to corporate greed. Bowtech has a serious PR issue and a whirlwind of Karma coming back to smack them in the face and I'll be here for it. #blowtechsucks
