Ben Orr was a bonafide superstar, yet also an *every man* kind of guy in every sense of the word. To me, he and Cash kind of resemble one another, and the world could use a couple more Orr's/Cash's...

I generally comment on Ben's great vocals, Ric Ocasek's great lyrics and vocals, Elliot Easton's incredible hooks and riffs - but on this song, Greg Hawkes is a beast! Listen to those keys carry the song, allowing Ben Orr to lay out a perfect vocal....and then Easton ends it with a great run. The CARS were so damn good.... Technically, one of the alltime best.

Sorry to disappoint you with our "Ben Orr nut hugging", FarquharsonUSA, but we're true fans. Yes, Ric is very talented ~ he writes the songs, and sings the quirky, funky ones -- we love those too! But the ballads are best sung by Ben ( Ric even admitted that in an interview! ) And have you heard poor Ric trying to sing "Ben's songs" lately? Not the same...they sound like "covers." So maybe you can understand our fondness for Benjamin ~ we just miss him singing our favorite Cars songs!!

Of all of the songs I have heard in my life, this is my absolute favorite. The interplay between Elliot Easton's incredibly tasty guitar lines and fills and the cascading waterfall of notes from Greg Hawkes keyboards are on another level altogether. Toss in Orr's on point singing style, the relentless drumming and then the backing harmonies and you have musical perfection. When I leave this world, this song is what I will miss the most.

Probably just momentum. At this point radio and MTV was starting to move on from the Cars and their last album before breaking up around this time was pretty weak. The music landscape was pretty crowded with hair metal in this era and the band, who at the time was still seen as a bit of a New Wave MTV novelty act by much of the general public, was getting long in the tooth. This is a melancholy song of a band splitting apart at the seams.

It was the times, and also this song incorporates some country elements, whereas people wanted static categories of music. The Cars were always ahead of everyone else, and even at their zenith of success a lot of people didn't understand what they were doing. They were truly innovative.

    • @diamonddavemusic

Ben sings this in a standard tenor range. The lyrics begin on a C4 and his vocals go as high as a G4 and as low as a C3 with some lower vibrato. Not to get too technical, but although Ben had an awesome texture to his voice, he was indeed a tenor and NOT a baritone. I'm also a huge fan of both Ben and Ric's singing styles, and I agree when you say this song should have been another top 40 hit for the band. Rock on! ✌🎶

David was great; perfect execution of *practically every song he played. (*not of fan of the drum machine he was forced to use during the 80's)
Drummers are taken for granted; unless you are John Bonham who is worshiped from afar.
David's part in The Cars personally rock my socks off!
When I'm in the car w/ my great stereo and the drums start the beat to YAIGT, I crank it up and fly with the wind rocking to The Cars and David's fantastic drumming.

I love David Robinson, I think he might be my "second favorite". The fact is he is extremely to The Cars story, not just in holding down the beat musically but artistically. He made them LOOK like a band - gave them a unified, but not uniform, look with his red, white and black color scheme initially, he designed album covers and inner sleeves. He even gave them their name, HE is the one who came up with the name The Cars(they all agreed on it, they'd all sort of thrown names into the mix and it was decided his was the best). He is a large part of the reason they looked cool. Sort of funny Ric was just an overgrown hippie prior to that(as were Ben and Greg apparently) so if Ric has "style" afterwards, it's largely because he learned it from David Robinson.

As a drummer and guitarist, please let me know what you think of the following: Benjamin started out on drums. I think it’s reflected in his bass playing. Whenever I see him step back beside David’s drum kit - usually to make Elliot’s solos a focal point - his fingering/playing is in sync with David’s drumbeats. Lockstep, I think it’s called. I’m not a musician, but I know David and Benjamin were a great rhythm section of the band.

In my opinion, he was such an amazing drummer, you can hardly tell the difference whether it was David or a synthesizer. That's pretty incredible. Don't get me wrong, RHCP are one of my most favorite groups of all time. I was going to name my first son Hillel but I ended up with girls. But Flea doesn't really get it going in every song. It all depends on the style of the song. He keeps the songs going with a fantastic style. The Chili Peppers focal point was the bass since the beginning. The complete opposite of The Cars. And Flea could never keep the band on track without Chad Smith. They're the rhythm section.

It's so odd because earlier in this month of October, I just got on a Cars redo and found myself watching their videos. I was pretty young when they were at their peak. I found myself looking at Ben now and it was like I had just discovered him. The voice, the great guitar playing, and his beautiful face. I decided to look up his date of death and it was October 3rd of 2000. I didn't realize 20 years had already gone by and for some reason I had gravitated back to him right around the time he died 2 decades ago. He was everything... Very talented, handsome, and that smile...Sigh...

This song has me hooked like a drug, I just keep coming back for more. Today is Oct. 3rd, anniversary of Bens passing. I know you had many more songs to sing. Rest in Peace beautiful man. Bens passing makes me very depressed.

@@jackiebeals5810 yes. We get it. Somehow I missed learning of Ben's passing in 2000. It was shocking finding out he was gone. Such a bright, beautiful man. Death is pretty awful to come to grips with.
Are you doing a little better now?

This performance has balls!! These guys were amazing live - Elliot's playing is so tasty and pure - and Ben's voice...well...he has an astounding range. He was a pretty down-to-earth kind of guy - didn't buy into the rock-god thing, but on stage, when he sang, he held us all enthralled.

This song and the way Ben sings it is just over the top sultry and just melts me everytime I
hear it. It's Ric's lyrics and Ben's deep resonant voice and the way Ben inhabits the song:
I can't resist. Something happens that I like.....
