You never knew what to expect from The Cars. Like every song was completely different. It's almost impossible to put a style or genre on them. They were unique.
Beautiful Benjamin , what a vision he was. That smile... hot. This video has some of the best close ups of Ben. Love it. His voice on this song is amazing. Miss you sweetheart.
These guys were so tight. Their music was so full of fantastic songs, its pretty amazing the way it just seemed to flow through them into absolute art.
I generally comment on Ben's great vocals, Ric Ocasek's great lyrics and vocals, Elliot Easton's incredible hooks and riffs - but on this song, Greg Hawkes is a beast! Listen to those keys carry the song, allowing Ben Orr to lay out a perfect vocal....and then Easton ends it with a great run. The CARS were so damn good.... Technically, one of the alltime best.
I don't know how I missed this song in the 80's! But I'm obsessed with the live version now!!! Love it! Miss Benjamin so much!!!!! Such an epic voice!!!
I cannot get enough of Benjamin's voice in this song, it just floors me. He was forty here and still going strong. What an incredible talent and stage presence. So sadly missed and loved.
OMG...I can still feel Ben’s deep rich baritone running through me from this song...This live version is incredible. He was such an underrated superstar.
Ben Orr was a bonafide superstar, yet also an *every man* kind of guy in every sense of the word. To me, he and Cash kind of resemble one another, and the world could use a couple more Orr's/Cash's...
That's the gorgeous Ben smile that melts the hearts of all his fans! I could watch those few seconds over and over. Wish I had a loop of that I could play all the time. There is another one at about 2:42 that is just about as good. His mood was pretty upbeat on the entire video. Looked like he as really having a great time. Elliot's solo after the second smile is awesome!
He would smile while he was singing. I've seen him do it with other songs and ...sigh....He was a consummate singer and guitarist but oh so beautiful to look at as well.
Ben sings this in a standard tenor range. The lyrics begin on a C4 and his vocals go as high as a G4 and as low as a C3 with some lower vibrato. Not to get too technical, but although Ben had an awesome texture to his voice, he was indeed a tenor and NOT a baritone. I'm also a huge fan of both Ben and Ric's singing styles, and I agree when you say this song should have been another top 40 hit for the band. Rock on! ✌🎶

My favorite live song sung so sultry and deep by sexy Benjamin Orr! Love watching David Robinson on drums and Elliot on guitar. This is my first song of the day and my last of the night. I wish I knew what city they were playing in for this ultimate live version of this song. My absolute favorite. Look at Benjamin Express in this song and his face to the audience. A definite connection! We love you Benjamin Orr and the Cars! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I love this so much! Such a great song. Ben Orr melts my heart…God I miss him. I really love the guitars on this live version. It’s the best I’ve heard and I have the album. The Cars often sounded better live but that’s just my humble opinion. RIP Ben and Ric. 🌹
Yes, at 77 years old, I am thankful for the web and all these videos because I can enjoy the music more fully. I always liked The Cars music, I can now enjoy them visually as well. I really like the "Look" of the band.
Probably just momentum. At this point radio and MTV was starting to move on from the Cars and their last album before breaking up around this time was pretty weak. The music landscape was pretty crowded with hair metal in this era and the band, who at the time was still seen as a bit of a New Wave MTV novelty act by much of the general public, was getting long in the tooth. This is a melancholy song of a band splitting apart at the seams.
It was the times, and also this song incorporates some country elements, whereas people wanted static categories of music. The Cars were always ahead of everyone else, and even at their zenith of success a lot of people didn't understand what they were doing. They were truly innovative.
plus, i don't think it translated well on vinyl. A lot of their songs were like that. It wasn't until you heard them play it live, that you realized how kick-ass they were!
Benjamin had it going on with a vengeance...mad style, a voice that makes you weep, and enough hot-ness to melt a glacier. So many talents, a gift to the world. Gone much too soon.
Damn.... watching this performance really makes me miss Ben Orr and those days when his kind of musical talent and dynamic persona, really wrote the soundtrack and set the emulate-able standard of my life... His image here clad in an all black leather slamming out bass line on solid black guitar always seems to get a chuckle out of my 20yo kids, but once the music starts...they too become mesmerized... RIP BO WeMissYa
Of all of the songs I have heard in my life, this is my absolute favorite. The interplay between Elliot Easton's incredibly tasty guitar lines and fills and the cascading waterfall of notes from Greg Hawkes keyboards are on another level altogether. Toss in Orr's on point singing style, the relentless drumming and then the backing harmonies and you have musical perfection. When I leave this world, this song is what I will miss the most.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Ric wrote some great songs, but Benjamin made them what they are....instant classics! I can play his songs over and over again.

One of the BEST technically proficient bands of all time. As a drummer and a guitarist I remain confused why more ppl don't appreciate David Robinsons drumming. He was a BEAST!
@Tim Stewart - I agree! David Robinson’s *excellent* drumming is far too often not commended. It’s like he was so great at his job, he blended in and got overlooked. As a drummer and guitarist, please let me know what you think of the following: Benjamin started out on drums. I think it’s reflected in his bass playing. Whenever I see him step back beside David’s drum kit - usually to make Elliot’s solos a focal point - his fingering/playing is in sync with David’s drumbeats. Lockstep, I think it’s called. I’m not a musician, but I know David and Benjamin were a great rhythm section of the band.
So you are a drummer and guitarist! Do you have a band that you play regularly with? I imagine Covid put an end to a lot of that sort of entertainment.
@@annettebell2101 Well, first of all, it's two different types of music your speaking of... In my opinion, he was such an amazing drummer, you can hardly tell the difference whether it was David or a synthesizer. That's pretty incredible. Don't get me wrong, RHCP are one of my most favorite groups of all time. I was going to name my first son Hillel but I ended up with girls. But Flea doesn't really get it going in every song. It all depends on the style of the song. He keeps the songs going with a fantastic style. The Chili Peppers focal point was the bass since the beginning. The complete opposite of The Cars. And Flea could never keep the band on track without Chad Smith. They're the rhythm section.
Sofa King beautiful. I literally am in tears as I watch Ben drive this band into a perfect frenzy in such a seemingly simple song. Perfect example of how tight they were. The way Ben smiles when he sings is just amazing. We will never see that again.
They eventually found their live legs for sure... I saw them on panorama Shake it up... It didn't sound that great, too many bells and whistles missing, but by the time I saw them for heartbeat City they had gotten their live act together
i believe at this point they weren't even traveling in the same vehicle together. Ben would show up separately , almost right before going onstage. Ric was not talking to him.
Ben was a true entertainer, amazing talent, very cool guy. Listening to him sing this song live he could have been a huge name in country and western also.
These guys had a blast on stage. Look at Hawkes on the keys!! David keeping them on pace. Elliot jamming away. Ben being himself. Why is Ric even there? Oh yeah, he writes the songs.
@@jackiebeals5810 the mind boggles lol. That smile is the sexiest smile in music history. How lucky were those girls who got to kiss him omg if only! I get butterflies thinking about it lol
Right that smile. And the way he could look so intense and then crack a little smile. Melts my heart. And his eyes are amazing too. He had it all going on!
Tonight's the first time I have ever heard this song. I'm 40, but my mom loved the cars when I was a kid. I have always loved them, too. I never appreciated Benjamin Orr's voice until recently. Now, I'm obsessed. Wish he were still here. ❤
That's exactly how I feel about this song - I've been saying so on other channels. The studio version is just magical, a real "tour de force" of multitracked harmonies (mostly by Ben) interweaving with his PERFECT lead! I love the chords, the double-time acoustic (Go, Ric!), David's flawless drumming, and an Elliot Easton solo that SOUNDS easy but probably isn't. Best song on Door to Door (which I happen to love) and one of their overall best EVER! They weren't happy, but still played great.
Not true. "Silenced forever" is what happened to orators and musicians from before the 20th century. You can listen to everything Ben ever sang over and over, for the rest of your life.
Ben your homecoming induction into the Rock Hall of Fame was held a couple weeks ago. You were missed! Your band mates gave you much due Respect. Rest In Peace
Dougie Fresh Not as much as he deserved. I really think they should have given him more credit. Too bad his son didn’t accept his award. When Queen was inducted they brought Freddie’s mother up to accept his award. It was beyond moving! I cried my eyes out! 🥺
I just found this video a few days ago and somehow, I have never heard this song but wow! I can't stop listening to and watching this! Thanks for keeping this video up!!!
Benjamin channels a wee bit of Elvis in this song. So beautiful. Ric was a versatile songwriter and he’s lucky he had Benjamin. They were lucky to have each other.
Ben orr had an underrated voice. No one appreciated this man's talent and voice at the time .It had taken a while longer for people to realize that there was no one who came close to his talent .He was truly remarkable.
@@nickbern8524 Thats wild that you said that, because my wife & I went to Live Aid in 85, and her favorite band was the Cars, but she said his talent gets overlooked because he is so good looking.
@Evan Hodge Being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame now is more political now than being a “ rock legend”. Half of the artist inducted lately never played rock at all
Is it just me or does Greg look like he's having a grand ol time here. It's such a sweet song with a happy tune. He's so cute. He makes me smile. No one else looks happy except a little of Benjamin but Greg's digging it. :)

i wasnt impressed with Door To Door when it came out, but listening to it now... I find more and more to love. Rest in Peace the fabulous Ben Orr. Tragic loss way too soon.. an absolutely unparalleled voice!
it was a gem, better when heard live. So what singles are released?: You Are The Girl - a squishy, douche-y embarrassment, even if popular. Strap Me In - predictable lyrics and worse; lewdly suggestive, with plodding lack-luster melody. Coming Up You - was not in Benjamin's comfortable range. Now, Double Trouble was exactly the type of rock other bands were playing; driving, heavily guitar laden rhythm. Sexy song. a Knock-out of a song. Everything You Say - great on multiple levels. A winner. Overall the album was a jumbled, mixed up mess of no continuity. Just a bad mixture of 1/3 very good songs, the rest not so. And Fine Line?? a nauseating dirge.
The more I watch this Video (Perhaps their last "LIVE") the more I appreciate how great the CARS were. Ben's voice in this Video, never better and the acoustics are "Phenomenal" highlighted by Elliot's solos... This rates as one of their Best songs and many people have never heard it...
They were having so much fun with this song.
So beautiful to see Our Ben smile so much.
Sofa King beautiful. I literally am in tears as I watch Ben drive this band into a perfect frenzy in such a seemingly simple song. Perfect example of how tight they were. The way Ben smiles when he sings is just amazing. We will never see that again.
By this time, The Cars had just become a machine live. Unbelievably tight, great songs, great playing. They just had it all.
NEVER CAN BE DUPLICATED...ONLY ONE BEN ORR....THE BEST..24 YEARS LATER!!!!!BENNY LIVES❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This should have been a big song for the Cars. Benjamin's voice was awesome and the song was awesome. This goes on my RUclips playlist!!
I listen to his music everyday. It starts my day positively. My favorite. Everything you say. I absolutely love it!!
It got decent airplay in the 80’s
I hear a touch of Elvis in Bens voice here, he had such an amazing voice
Benjamin makes this song what it is. Great music. First time hearing this. Benjamin was the face and voice of The Cars. He is sorely missed.
These guys had a blast on stage. Look at Hawkes on the keys!! David keeping them on pace. Elliot jamming away. Ben being himself. Why is Ric even there? Oh yeah, he writes the songs.
Ben definitely has a smile that can melt your heart. He could get away with anything with that smile#
Yes, he had a smile that would cause women to suffer ...
@@patricias5122 Perfectly stated. I'm suffering just thinking about his smile! That's our lot in life. LOL
EVERYTHING HE SANG.
Kenneth Lujan «Leaves us full of shine!» 😉
Fills me full of shine !
I was at this show.
It lasted just under 1 hour. It mad me sad. I love the Cars, my favorite band and Orr had the best voice, ever.
Under one hour? Were the Cars the headliner?
What city was this. I so need to know! Thank you!!!

It was meant to
Tonight's the first time I have ever heard this song. I'm 40, but my mom loved the cars when I was a kid. I have always loved them, too. I never appreciated Benjamin Orr's voice until recently. Now, I'm obsessed. Wish he were still here. ❤
Every person in the world should know this magnificent band.
🖐🖐👏👏👌👌🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
That's exactly how I feel about this song - I've been saying so on other channels. The studio version is just magical, a real "tour de force" of multitracked harmonies (mostly by Ben) interweaving with his PERFECT lead!
I love the chords, the double-time acoustic (Go, Ric!), David's flawless drumming, and an Elliot Easton solo that SOUNDS easy but probably isn't.
Best song on Door to Door (which I happen to love) and one of their overall best EVER!
They weren't happy, but still played great.
I never tire of seeing that beautiful face and hearing that gorgeous voice. He's one in a million that's for sure. =)
Its a shame that this voice has been silenced forever. :( He was truly a remarkable singer and individual.:**(
Not true. "Silenced forever" is what happened to orators and musicians from before the 20th century. You can listen to everything Ben ever sang over and over, for the rest of your life.
Eu entendi. "Silenciada" no sentido humano falando. 😢😢.agora através das músicas e vídeos não.....saudade desse lindoo❤..😢😢😢
He was the best part of the cars, my idol
It’s a feel good song! One of those that should never end! I want to listen to it over and over and over...🥰
And watch Benjamin over and over again 😍.
I listen to his music everyday. It starts my day positively. My favorite. Everything you say. I absolutely love it!!
Ben your homecoming induction into the Rock Hall of Fame was held a couple weeks ago. You were missed! Your band mates gave you much due Respect. Rest In Peace
made me cry :(
Dougie Fresh Not as much as he deserved. I really think they should have given him more credit. Too bad his son didn’t accept his award. When Queen was inducted they brought Freddie’s mother up to accept his award. It was beyond moving! I cried my eyes out! 🥺
@@anij8226 happy to confirm Ben's son was there, at the band's table
SASoundsRock I didn’t mean sitting at a table. He should have gone up on the stage like Freddie’s mum did. That would have been amazing.
@@anij8226 Yes that would have been nice.
I just found this video a few days ago and somehow, I have never heard this song but wow! I can't stop listening to and watching this! Thanks for keeping this video up!!!
I listen to his music everyday. It starts my day positively. My favorite. Everything you say. I absolutely love it!!
Me too, I have listened to all their first 5 albums hundreds of times since they first broke, but somehow I missed this great song.
I have it on repeat!!!😊
Ben away 19 yrs ..
October 3rd..
just realized it with comment below-
I thank RUclips and uploaders that keep these bands alive in our lives-
Benjamin channels a wee bit of Elvis in this song.
Half of the artist inducted lately never played rock at all
Saying no one appreciate his voice?! Hardly.
@Evan Hodge I will make it easy to understand so even you will get it. Its the Rock & Roll, not the Music hall of fame
@Evan Hodge Thank you, I appreciate the first part of your compliment :)
Never realized how tight a band the Cars where until I got old.Outstanding Song and Band...
One of the greatest Cars song ever, and 30yrs old. Where has all the great music gone?
Memories of a young man travelling in Asia, wore out the cassette. The Cars have given me alot of joy.
Is it just me or does Greg look like he's having a grand ol time here. It's such a sweet song with a happy tune. He's so cute. He makes me smile. No one else looks happy except a little of Benjamin but Greg's digging it. :)
fivelightsonahill I love watching him. He’s so energetic and you can tell he loves playing. I love the keys on this song, Greg is an awesome keyboardist!
Lisa Knell Oh! Yesss! Greg Hawkes is phenomenal! 👍👍👍
*BENJAMIN ORR* who is the lead vocalist on this famous Cars' Song is a *LEGEND!* Your voice & music is so missed BENJAMIN...Rest In Peace Benjamin...
Talent extraordinaire..all of them ❤
This is a fantastic version of this song! The Cars have the best hooks in the business! I'll be playing this one on repeat for a while. Rest in peace Mr. Ocasek and Mr. Orr! Your music will live on forever in the hearts and ears of millions of fans all over the world. "Since you're gone" PEACE
The cars were musically one of a kind without a doubt , I loved them in 1977 and I still love them in 2019
They were phenomenal! Also a fan since their inception.
rock and roll hall of famers right here!!!!
Happy birthday Ben Orr, your contribution to the music industry will never be forgotten. You are truly missed. RIP...
Complete perfection! But we already knew that! I am so thankful that I got to see them play this live in the 80’s ! God bless Ben! What an angel❤️
This song makes my heart so full. Bens voice and presence are just incredible. Everything about him is incredible.i love the psychedelic country feel to this.
Just found this a couple of weeks ago, can't stop listening to it!! The whole band has such awesome energy!❤️ Benjamin's voice is beautiful, just like him! ❤️❤️🎸 Wish he was still here today ❤️
I listen to his music everyday. It starts my day positively. My favorite. Everything you say. I absolutely love it!!
i wasnt impressed with Door To Door when it came out, but listening to it now... I find more and more to love. Rest in Peace the fabulous Ben Orr. Tragic loss way too soon.. an absolutely unparalleled voice!
What. A. Voice. Never a wrong note, so smooth.
OMG! I just cannot believe the musical talent from this one man. his voice is wonderful. even if this song has a country flare to it. Love it
I love this song.
Ben's voice just beautiful.
What a voice, Benjamin Orr was awesome. Its a shame this one didn't make it to the radio. It's crazy how easy Elliot makes it look.
it was a gem, better when heard live.
So what singles are released?:
You Are The Girl - a squishy, douche-y embarrassment, even if popular.
Thanks benny for this terrific post...
Easton is terrific as usual as is Orr and the rest of this amazing band.
Truly amongst the greatest of all time.
What a truly great band - It never gets old 💙
