  • Data is nothing without the brains to understand it correctly - and we have just the brain for the job. From plastic-infested riverbanks in the Caribbean to diplomatic meetings in Kenya, Renata Correia has spent four years crossing the world with The Ocean Cleanup, analyzing and enhancing the data we gather on plastic pollution. Renata takes us through her journey: from her horror at her first sight of the scale of plastic pollution in Guatemala, to her current role as the 'data whisperer' in our Rivers program.
Every river is different, and solid data helps us see where plastic pollution comes from and lets us measure our impact in tackling it. As Head of Performance and Analysis for our Rivers team, Renata tells Catching Up how her constant curiosity keeps her searching for new answers, and how she guides an expert team of scientists around the world to connect the dots and spot the patterns across a planet's worth of plastic data.

Should humanity make it through the next centuries, civilized individuals of the future look back at our time in awe, and wonder what we were thinking as we polluted the earth so badly... I hope that in that future there will be testimony of your work. I think you are truly amazing and a beacon of hope.

I get the feeling it'll be like watching the race grow up. Some are already adults, but some .. phew.
I like this project because it assumes humans will keep polluting and tries to fix after that problem, taking eggs between baskets

Super important study and work! Thank you! I always tell people that want to help to start by cleaning up their own neighborhoods before the trash gets caught up in the watershed systems. If everybody did a little, it would add up and make a difference.

Curiosity, inventiveness, a scientific approach, lots of support from the crowd and sheer doggedness will maybe (hopefully!) save our oceans and their inhabitants from the number one man-made scurge: plastic trash.

Microwave plastic pyrolysis paired with custom engines built to use pyrolysis oil & the (basically) methane released from the process can close the loop. Power the ships with this system, no more sorting, no more washing, no more hauling, no more landfill. This entire system could be eventually run by robots that don't have to come back to port. Just start thinking about what you are collecting as fuel. Invest in engines that burn super clean. Maybe use the oil to power the ship & use the methane to power generators. All this tech I am referring to exists.

how did countries allow this to happen in their countries. rivers want were the governments doing to stop it. I know these countries are poor, but this is criminal to allow these rivers to get this bad I think the industries of the world should be made to fund the clean-up

I would wonder what Donald Trump would think about negative externalities like this? Or Vivek. Should we just accept these horrendous unacceptable impacts as completely ok?
RFK seems to be the only politician that has a track record and actual practical knowledge on a possible change in a direction away from this.
