I am from Crete and as you may know Mediterranean diet is based on Cretan cuisine. My two cents on the topic as raised and grown up in a village in Crete I would say there are two key factors here:
    a) The pyramid of the Mediterranean diet is not based on what's best to eat rather than what was more accessible to eat. e.g. red meat was rarely consumed because it was so expensive. Small cheaper fish, chickens and rabbits were more accessible but still expensive. Eggs and goat milk you could have more often. etc...
    b) The quality of food is (was) the most important aspect of the diet. No broccoli or avocado, no berries, no dressings and staff you eat today. Most of the diet was plain green plants out in the fields, no pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers etc. We had our own olives, gardens and animals. Eating seasonal fruits under the trees,.
I could write for hours... Snails was the protein for the poor and a delicacy at the same time. Whole wheat boiled, nothing refined. A few thing store bought, home made sweets and stuff...
I ate salmon in my late 30s and I am 45, like the avocado... Nowadays they're all gone. If you base your Mediterranean diet sources in the super market you are getting cancer... It's sad...

There is a recent study showing most vegatable food oils have high amounts of plastics and olive oil had the highest when several different brands of each type of oil was tested.
I'm going to stick to just eating olives and avacado's and cut out oils all together.
They don't appear to be in butter and tallows so it most likely has something to do with the industrial filtering process of food oils.

Hi sir. I heard from dr Gundry multiple times that polythenols have low rate of absorption 1-10% and when combined with dairy they are not absorbed at all. smt like coffee with cream or yoghurt with berries will cancel out the benefits of polythenols. I wonder is it true or not since it's hard to find any more information on that. My diet is based around second ferment kefir from kefir grains where i grind up and ferment a lot of rich in polythenols foods like apples and flaxseed. Thanks

i just got this idea.. someone should make a fridge cupboard combo based on the pyramid. you could have the fridge on the one side with the tip down (keeping the meat colder) and the widest section on top with a less cold temp for the veggies. and a cupboard for dry goods with the tip pointing up next to it.. It could look like a normal square fridge/cupboard combo, just with weird triangular doors. I think it would be an awesome way to make it easier to follow a healthy diet, and make planning of food purchases easier. of course it could just be a smart device and order online as well. hm...

Not disputing clinical Mediterranean diet, but it's based on research ripped out of the culture and the environment. Real Mediterranean diet effect has to do with lifestyle of people in those areas. It's not just the food, they just take life differently. If you're typical European continental, go live in Milan for 6 months, then go to Naples. See if they drive you mad in Naples.

I am from a small island in mediteranean know for longevity. Old people maybe ate healthy when they were younger but in last 15 years they all eat a lot of procesed crap. Cookies, sweets, store bought milk etc.
From talking with old people their diet when they were young some 70 yrs ago was all local. Fish, legumes, vegetables, chicken only on sundays, red meat only on special ocasions and bread as staple. Lots of potatoes.
Now listen to this. Is there a nation today that eats natural balanced diet without procesed crap? Today in Italy, Greece or where ever, they all eat crap carbs and procesed shit. Its still much better than in USA but its no where near natural.
If you just follow natural, no sugar, good red meat, sometimes fish, nuts, a little bit of legumes, some complex carbs, good fats, vegetables, you will do much better than those mediteranean people 70 years ago. Red meat was allways praised and for good reason. Its a superfood. Mediteranean is a myth. Eat paleo with maybe some grains and some fermented dairy and you fly!
Other thing is tight social connectios and active lifestyle. Outside working all day, meeting friends all the time on every corner and laugh, thats our way! No cars, no traffic. Just one big island family surrounded by nature. We friends prepare dinners every weekend, usualy, grilled fish or meat, or wild pork stews or something. On the side of that is usualy baked potatoes and some kind of sallad. No bulshit dressings like in USA. Just olive oil and maybe vinegar. But emphasis is allways on good protein. Today legumes are rarely eaten. None of my friends are fat. They all like athletes.

Siim, all good points. The Mediterranean Diet is a myth, like the Food Pyramid was. In Australia most people eat crap diets and life expectancy is touching 83.7 years here this year. The stars are Hong Kong citizen's who eat mainly carnivore diets, and are smokers. If you look at the mean and the top life expectancies, there is only about 15% difference. No a lot in the scheme of things. To me, healthspan is more important than lifespan.

As this video points out the clinical Mediterranean diet was based on the island of Crete in the late 1940's and '50's. As a matter of fact food from several villages was gathered and frozen and taken for storage. So the scientists involved know exactly what was being eaten back then and it is nothing like that now. Look at the comment here from a guy from Crete and he points out what it really was like.

Worldwide, bivariate correlation analyses revealed that meat intake is positively correlated with life expectancies. This relationship remained significant when influences of caloric intake, urbanization, obesity, education and carbohydrate crops were statistically controlled. Stepwise linear regression selected meat intake, not carbohydrate crops, as one of the significant predictors of life expectancy. In contrast, carbohydrate crops showed weak and negative correlation with life expectancy.

“Seventh-day Adventist vegetarians, on average, live longer lives compared to non-vegetarian Adventists, with some reaching over 100 years old. This longevity trend is linked to the health benefits of plant-based diets, which have been extensively studied within the Adventist community. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, founded in 1863, has promoted vegetarianism since its inception, with founding member Ellen White encouraging members to adopt meat-free diets for better health and compassion towards animals.”

False. The cult members that ate the most eggs, dairy, and fish had the longest life expectancies. Those members also exercised the most and drank and smoked the least. All associations and inferences. The cult founders seek depopulation by destroying human fertility, virility, and “eliminating desires” via vegetarianism and the Trojan horse of animal welfare.
