They don't do things halfway. They rewrote the entire set of lyrics in the Kyoto dialect for the song and they put in a lot of cool Easter eggs like Akane not waiting to eat her ramen. The writing at the very start means world domination. And there's a lot more stuff. The amount of work they put on on this is really unbelievable. That's a recurring theme with these ladies. We don't deserve them.
Maikos are apprentice geishas. There are many schools for maikos in Kyoto. Saiki used the dialect from Kyoto to sing the song. Each os the Maids had their own maiko names for the album. There are a few outtakes from the shooting of the video. One of the really funny ones of MISA bending over laughing her butt off after doing the crane call for the song. There's also another one of Akane in a kimono and wooden platform shoots climbing a large set of stone stairs. Her look back to the cameraman and the photographers was supposed to be pensive, but it was more like, "If I fall in this getup, someone's going to die!"
The Maids are not only masters at genre melding, transitions, riff production, structure and execution... they are also masters of cultural melding. Maidiacs are MAIKOACS, too! 😆🤘
It's a joke that went over so well that the following year, Band-Maiko released an EP with an original tune called " Gion Cho. " I highly recommend ! 😏♥️🎙🎸🥁😎🤘
May I briefly introduce you to these 5 young beautiful ladies? :) Fujiki (lead vocals), Hatoko (rhythm guitar, vocals), Kanoemi (lead guitar), Umemisa (bass) and last but not least Akatsuki (drums). Together they are Band-Maiko, the only band out there that is able to hold a candle to the Maids. 🤭 Or in other words, the best damn April Fool's joke the music industry has ever seen and heard. 🤘🏻.... Honestly, hats off to their management and label at the time for taking part in this whole thing on what was certainly also a costly project. Not to mention the risk of announcing the whole thing on a large scale, with a redesign of the homepage and everything, that Band-Maid is history and that they want to continue like this in the future. Every time I see this, I think again and again how brilliant, outstanding and truly special these 5 ladies are. ❤🔥 And i think it's needless to say, Gion-Cho, an original song by the Maikos, is a must after this. :) _____________________ 「 _"Our rock never dies ever. Absolutely !!!! Beni Ninagawa is an absolute goddess of Tsugaru Shamisen. Another excellent Shamisen player is Shinobu Kawashima, who plays mostly jazz, and who played with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi.

Music, art and cultural ambassadors to the world 🌍 Who woulda thunk it? I’m just an old dude from Detroit, but this group of musicians has compelled me to learn a lot about Japan 🇯🇵 ❤ A few Japanese words and phrases learned, a Tohsenkyo fan throwing game on my Amazon wish list, and a dream of traveling there someday ✈️ Just a fantastic, wonderful group of people, po!
Remember, almost ALL of the Ladies discography is available under the releases tab on their YT channel. With the exception of their first Mini-Album and a few one shots. But everything else is there, it just may not have a MV or OLV.
I feel they must know each other... while Band Maiko has covered a few Band Maid songs, Band Maid has also covered a Band Maiko original when they toured their home town Kyoto. Pretty clever of the Maikos to sing in their local dialect too!
They haven't come back to Band-Maid alter ego, but if you listen to "Protect You" you'll catch a traditional instrument sampled in the backing track. 😉😉😉
I'm glad you enjoyed this video and I can't wait for you to react to Gion-Cho, which is a piece of art, not just a music video. A Maiko is the term for an apprentice geisha. There have been a lot of misconceptions about what geishas were all about and I learned a lot when this video and Gion-Cho shoved me down that rabbit hole, lol. In the video, Misa actually made those howls herself. They took a lot of care in getting the small details right. Once again, another great reaction.
Nice to meet you. I always enjoy looking at your works. I am Japanese and I would like to explain the lyrics used in this song. (I always try to comment on Band-Maiko's reactions with this explanation, so I know some of the viewers who read this comment section have already read it somewhere else, but I'll post it here as well.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In all the songs of BAND-MAIKO, Saiki uses the word called "京ことば Kyo-kotoba (Kyoto dialect)". The Kyo-kotoba has many special phrases that are different from the so-called "Kansai-ben (Kansai region dialect. Kyoto is included in the Kansai region)", and even if you are from Kyoto, it is not a word that ordinary people other than maiko and geisha use on a daily basis. Many maiko are not from Kyoto, but when working as a maiko in Kyoto, it is not desirable to use the dialect of the region in which they were born and raised. Therefore, the training content of Maiko includes the acquisition of this Kyo-kotoba. The Kyo-kotoba is, so to speak, a "common language" for maiko and geisha. ※ "Maiko (Pronunciation is my-ko)" means a person in the apprenticeship stage of Geiko (Geisha). The Japanese instrumental sounds used are 三味線 Shamisen A Shamisen is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. It is played with a plectrum called a Bachi. 琴 Koto Japanese stringed instrument that resembles a zither; has a rectangular wooden sounding board and usually 13 silk strings that are plucked with the fingers. 和太鼓 Wadaiko Japanese drums. 鼓 Tsuzumi Japanese hand drum. 篠笛 Shinobue A traditional Japanese woodwind instrument, that is a simple bamboo cross flute made of thin bamboo called shinodake with a hole for blowing into and a finger hole in the mouth. 尺八 Shakuhachi A shakuhach is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute that is made of bamboo. However, in fact, the actual instruments are not used, but rather the composer/guitarist KANAMI typed the sounds of the Japanese traditional instruments.
You really should see videos where Saiki is about to get married with Akane and Kanami walks just right moment to the scene 😅 These ladies are so much fun. I hope someone can link those to you
This is a secret that only I know, but the members of Band-Maiko are actually the twin sisters of each member of Band-Maid. No one knows when or where Band-Maiko will appear. My guess is that Band-Maiko will appear on April 1st next year, for just one day❤
A Maiko is an apprentice Geisha from Kyoto. This was an April fools joke by the band. On April 1st 2018 the Band-Maid website and You Tube channel was taken down and replaced by Band-Maiko. All music was removed and replaced with this MV (a cover of Band-Maid's "Secret My Lips). They stated this was their new direction. They also don't sing in normal Japanese dialect, they sing in Kyoto dialect. Check out the original "Secret My Lips" for the difference. They also changed their names: Saiki became Fujiki Miku became Hatoko Kanami became Kanoemi MISA became Umemisa Akane became Akatsuki In 2019 they did it again on April 1st releasing the MV to "Gion-Cho" - the only Band-Maiko original. They also released a seven track EP of Band-Maid covers with added traditional instruments plus "Gion-Cho" "Secret Maiko Lips" (Band-Maids "Secret My Lips") "Akasimahen" (Band-Maids "Awkward") "Ansan" (Band-Maids "Anemone") "Tora and Tora" (Band-Maids "One and Only") "Yolosiosu" (Band-Maids "YOLO") "Screaming" (Band-Maids "Screaming") "Gion Cho" The only band I know that formed a covers band of themselves!
They take their April Fool's jokes seriously, the production values here are amazing. And great attention to detail. Maikos are apprentice geishas, and you'll notice there's a gap around the white face makeup and the hairline, that's an actual defining difference between maikos and geishas. There are also details in the eye and lip makeup that define their apprentice status. The video for Gion Cho is equally as impressive, it was Miku's tribute to old Kyoto. There's a BTS video of Gion Cho that shows how much prep work went into these. ruclips.net/video/M4LuyZ6WYow/видео.html
