  • We stopped by the Mickey Thompson Tire support trailer during the Lights Out 8 event at South Georgia Motorsports Park to talk tires.
    M/T Motorsports Manager, Tom Kundrik; shows Tim the differences between radial tires used for each class in the event before discussing big tire vs. small tire, recommend pressures, bite and tuning as well as how to asses tire wear.

    Here comes an old guy comment--in the late 60s when thin-wall, low pressure slicks debuted, they would draw a crowd in the pits. I remember seeing somebody push against the side of a car as we watched in amazement while the car wobbled side to side, wheel rims moving in and out as the tread sat flat on the ground. At first, nobody had tire gauges available to accurately measure the low pressures used. Green Valley, circa 1967.

      I’ve seen big Hoosiers make 400-500 passes before the ET fell off; I’ve also seen folks that put one event on a set and toss em... if your ET drops change them tires

    I want to see a radial on a fuel car. It can be done...

    • @OskarasNauseda
      @OskarasNauseda 7 лет назад +1

      Brent Key it can be done but they would blow The tires off every pass

    • @brentkey4701
      @brentkey4701 7 лет назад

      Its doable without blowing the tires off IMO. They are just going to slip the clutch until the tire will hold the power on the big end.

      it has been done, without success.
      A fuel car requires high diameter growth on the top end and a radial will simply not experience significant diameter growth at speed without distorting with a reduced contact patch and catastrophic internal damage.
      A radial also does not maintain a usable contact patch at low pressures. Experimental radials for TF/TAD/FC/TAFC have been repeatedly tried and found to have inferior performance characteristics compared to bias tires.

      wont work dude, the tires are the suspension is the tire in a fuel car, it will just blow the tires off the moment it starts to shake

      Clutches wouldnt last past 60ft with the amount of slip they'll need lol

    at the end, he had no clue it seems about using a decline in 60' as an indicator of tire life.

    Get ready to say goodbye to bias ply tires.
