I'm not a vegetarian but I like the song, he gets his point across in a deep way without asking for debate. As you say it's up to each person to decide because where do you draw the line? Is it okay to eat fish, aren't they living creatures too? Some think it's okay to eat bison or horse. In other countries they eat dogs and cats. We treat them as family members but really aren't they the same as other animals, just domesticated? A lot to think about. Vegans don't believe in using any part of an animal including milk or eggs, certainly not using leather.

Thinking back to when the album was released I don't remember much fuss about this song at all. Amongst my group of friends who were Smiths fans the feeling was more of "great tune" and "fair fucks to Morrissey for putting his views out". None of us turned vegetarian over it. Over the years it has been said that many, many people gave up eating because of this one song. I'm not convinced. For my circle it was more important to have a t shirt or a poster with the iconic American soldier. Would I be right in thinking it was from Vietnam and the etching on the helmet was "make love not war"?

I worked at a morrissey gig in the past. He was such a diva, he requested that no one working could take meat into the venue when he was there. Didnt go down well with the staff but fair play to him. His songs are legendary.

Be complete chance I once found myself talking to a woman who was a catering manager in a venue where Morrissey once played. Change "requested" to "demanded". I'm not criticising Morrissey here, after years of such behaviour, no one was surprised.
