TIL - there is a name for trees cut with the principles of Bonsai but planted in the ground. Niwaki! Fascinating.
I love how you go from feet to meters so quickly.

Your garden works are so interesting and instructive. Pruning garden trees isn't for everyone because it can be a heavy job and not everyone has a garden, but it is as satisfying as bonsai

I have no place for Niwaki myself. But it is very impressive not to lose the overview here considering the height of the trees. To decide which branch I would remove I would have to go up and down the ladder 100 times. A great job and an equally great result.
Love this Peter. I started a bit of Niwaki pruning last year after watching some of your videos on the subject. It`s coming along quite well, but wish I had your minds eye though.

Very nice Peter. In Eden, Man was placed in there by God to cultivate and take care of the garden. Amoung the fruit and nut trees were every sort of tree desirable to the eyes. I can picture you in that setting with you working hard along with your great joy and passion. Take good care.

It makes everyone nervous to see you up on that ladder. At least I know it makes me nervous since I have fallen off of one of them. LOL. I was younger then too. LOL. Take care Peter.
Very very informative. One should think that natural looking shapes don’t take much work instead they are even more labour (and skill) intensive than ordinary topiary. Good to know when planning a garden.

Beautiful. How do you reduce the pine needles of bonsai trees?
The three trees end results look great. I never thought of keeping a tree growing in my yard at a constant height of 10 to 12 feet. Wonder if this technique would work on a live oak tree that we have in the southern states in the United States.
I would have to say yeah would probably work great! I forget what video Peter did, it was a more recent one, but he had a giant oak in a pot and it looked amazing!

Some of those live oaks along the outer banks are battered down to that height, so I'd think you could do it with training as well

I have a christmas tree about 3 ft. as a gift and i want to turn it as a bonsai, problem is i dont have any idea where to prune or how to style it😌

We do but Carmona is a very difficult species to grow well in Western Europe.

I remember watching a video on pruning deciduous trees and the person kept saying over and over again not to prune more than 30 percent of the tree each season. Is it different for pines? Thanks for the help!
Some of the trunks are curved and some are straight. Are the curved ones shaped when they were smaller or is this a feature of the species? Thanks for your wealth of knowledge!
They were pruned to curve that way when young.

Well, this is a first! After a late night I am late for Sunday bonsai breakfast with Peter Chan 😁
3 points of contact, Flair legs. You cannot lean sideways far enough to become outside the base created by the legs. The ladder will not tip to the side. If anything, it will lose one of the 3 contact points and fall diagonal. That is hard to do. You falling off the ladder is much more likely.

Do/can you wire these big trees?
I would assume the wire would start getting too thick for humans to bend easily enough, for it to be worth it on the thicker branches.
These large garden trees are not wired - they are trained by tying the branches down with string and using bamboo poles to flatten the pads.
Any tips or tricks for getting sap off of tools, clothes, and /or skin?
Clean with oil or Turps or WD-40
Couldn't you have air layered the top leaders you wanted to remove?

And these long 50 cm shoots .if you cut them simply in half .wil that shoot die or wil it give buds at the part where it was cut .
They will bud back so long as there are green needles to pull the sap up.
@@peterchan3100 sorry to take your time .but its september and i have bought 7 JBP chioguro the shoots are wel developed 25cm as thick as a pink ,already giving 5 to 6 terminal buds. i bought them in this stadium but .i realy want to deal with them . Before they grow to big . I mean they look like the want to grow big . They were field grown .so quite robust .
So i hope im not late ..
Ps. The trees are in healthy condition and have a very good rootball .

No - I have never seen jins on garden trees

Hi Peter i live in Australia it's difficult obtaining maple seeds ,may I buy some you,I have been watching you on youtube I just starting with bonsai ,we are in extreme lock down ,so I'm enjoying working with plants ,i dont have a large area and I love some trees,this way I can have them in bonsai style,tfs all your secrets.
I am going to harvest maple seeds this autumn. Maybe you would like a share of them as i normally will have way more than i need for myself. Greetings from germany

Some of these trees look like they have multiple branches coming out of the same place on the trunk. Not all of the bonsai principles apply to garden trees?
Yes - there are certain common principles - Triangular shape - space between branches - movement of the trunk - Flat pads etc

Not at all. If he has the strength to do the work continuing to do it will keep him healthier. Stopping exercising only accelerates decline.
@@pansepot1490 Sorry but it sounds as if you misunderstood me... I wasn't referring to what he's doing in general but climbing on leaders with slippery boots maybe isn't the best choice in his case. Maybe you realized how ducked & shaky he's walking around? Try to see it from this side... if he falls off the leader there'll be a long time no Peter Chan clips and I bet you would regret not advising him the same I did 😉🙏

This video gave me mixed emotions. I love any content from Peter. But watching a national treasure in his 70's lean over off a ladder causes so much anxiety. Careful Peter!
Wearing a dissimilar pair of boots. I want to recognise it as typical Chinese thriftyness. So funny; "nothing wrong with that" as the bonsai-master says.
Peter, love watching your videos, but it is very dangerous for you to climb up and down, and you should not work at night if no one around you. It only takes one fall to loose Peter Chan. I hope we can still see your videos in the next n years.
