    STORYLINE:
    Lava continued to spurt from a volcano in southwestern Iceland on Thursday but the activity had calmed significantly from when it erupted a day earlier.
    The eruption Wednesday was the fifth and most powerful since the volcanic system near Grindavik reawakened in December after 800 years, gushing record levels of lava as its fissure grew to 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) in length.
    The activity once again threatened Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people, and led to the evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, one of Iceland’s biggest tourist attractions.
    Grindavik, which is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, has been threatened since a swarm of earthquakes in November forced an evacuation in advance of the initial Dec. 18 eruption. A subsequent eruption consumed several buildings.
    Protective barriers outside Grindavik deflected the lava Wednesday but the evacuated town remained without electricity and two of the three roads into town were inundated with lava.
    Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, sees regular eruptions. The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which spewed huge clouds of ash into the atmosphere and led to widespread airspace closures over Europe.
    None of the current cycle of eruptions have had an impact on aviation.

    Finally a video with sound! I find it so frustrating to watch many otherwise beautiful videos from various channels without any sound. Sound really adds a whole new dimension to it all. So thanks for that.

    Blue Lagoon is safe. Ignore the volcano. This is the world's most harmless volcano in history. Visit the Blue Lagoon. Oh, and you might have to evacuate the spa when the alarms go off. But the resort is SAFE

    Great footage! They said another crack opened by the wall at Grindavik. I'm thinking it could rebuild for another fissure eruption there?

    How can we hear the sound of the erupting lava, but not the propellers of the drone?

      As the Mid-Atlantic rift opens up lava continually erupts through and around the rift. So quite opposite to the occasional false rhetoric Iceland is most definitely growing as it has been doing for the last 14 million years.

    • @llwpeaches
      @llwpeaches 3 месяца назад +1

      Invorrect. This process is how Iceland was created in the first place and it will continue to get bigger/expand over time. It sits in a divergent plate boundary and also over a mantle plume (aka "hotspot"). Magma continually creates new land between the spreading plates via these eruptions. That's also why it's called the mid-Atlantic ridge, not the mid-Atlantic valley.
