They kinda already did this with an indie movie called Saturday Morning Mystery it came out in the 2000s the characters in the movie look identical to the mystery machine crew but had the names changed due to copyright issues but the movie goes from the cases having villains with masks on to everything being real.

I'd honestly be down for an older-rated Scooby-Doo which keeps the gang as close knit and harmonious as they usually are.
There's a tendency for the gang to become more hostile to one another in the edgier Scooby media. It's not inherently bad, however there'd be something impactful about seeing that more wholesome friendship in grimmer circumstances.
There can still be smaller interpersonal conflicts and tiff's in some episodes, but it'd be nice to avoid the 'split apart over differences and come together' plotline. Hell the start of Zombie Island, a beloved darker entry, has them all come together after drifting apart...because they still love and miss one another and just want another go. I'd like to see that energy bought to an R rated Scooby story.

    • @theyakkoman

      Agred.
I'm reminded of how a lot of anime & superhero fans derided the Zack Snyder Man of Steel film for missing the point of Superman, and when confronted by Snyder-fans who said "No, you don't get it. It's a darker, more mature take and you can't handle that because you're so imature" they countered with "No, we have nothing against a more mature Superman. But if you make Superman himself dark you miss the point of the character" and then, since they were both anime and Superhero fans, they pointed to Trigun.
Trigun is how you do a dark Superman story. In that the main character, who is vastly overpowered compared to the rest of the cast, still is "handicapped" so to speak by the fact that he is an idealist in a very non ideal world and the struggle and toil it takes on him. How doing the right thing isn't the easy way out, nor the cowards way, but the right thing to do.
A "dark" Superman story doesn't have to turn Superman dark, but make the world around him more dark and cynic and shows how he still fights on despite those circumstances. That's what two of the most beloved Superman stories (Superman vs. The Elite (aka "What's So Funny About Truth and Justice?") and Kingdom Come) did, and they are beloved classics for a reason.
And I was reminded of that when I read your comment. Making the gang all hate each other and add drama in that way, yeah, you can do that. But it's more interesting to keep the characters and their dynamics and see how they react in a new environment and under new circumstances than to just "split them up" for drama's sake.

As a fan of both shows the crossover gives me lots of feelings.
Honestly the thing that would have made the Scoobynatral episode better was if the gang had post Zombie Island characterization and they were more disturbed by ghosts murdering people Han the fact they exist. Which culminates in the gang discovering that some bastard is forcing a dead kid to murder people.(What was actually going on in the episode!) Fred finally gets to use his catchphrase and surprise the real monster was always a normal greedy person! Dean has said multiple times he admires people who can deal with human evilness on a regular basis. It wold have been nice to see the characters have mutual respect at the end. I have a terrible pitch
So we take the gang and just have them fight horror movie monsters. I don't mean Dracula, or Frankenstein('s monster) I mean Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Micheal Myers, Ghostface, Chucky, maybe go for more obscure villains like Leprechaun, just a show where in each episode we get a new slasher for the gang to face (copyright will prevent this from happening).
Don't hold back on the violence show a guy who's face was cut off by Leatherface, or someone getting their head messed up by the reverse bear trap from Saw, have someone get eaten by Pennywise. Just stick to the brutality level you usually see in the respective villains movie
But stay true to the characters and maybe even have a "lets see who's under the mask" moment with Jason and then they see his face and immediately put it back on and remember "wait everyone's been saying his name's Jason"
Imply that the characters have been doing this for awhile so they just are desensitized by the brutality. Other than that there's just the occasional swear except in the Chucky episode there all the swears are taken by Chucky
At the very minimum give me a crossover with Ghostface and Chucky (in different movies)
Again this will probably never happen but a man can dream

Ok, I'm going to take this moment very seriously because I'm the biggest Scooby Doo fan I know and I've been waiting for a more adult version of the franchise since I was 13 years old.
My idea is a more adult version of the characters, the age they are in Zombie Island is perfect for me. Blood, nothing super exaggerated gore, deaths, suspense, even jumpscares. Some time ago I had an idea to make an animated miniseries with the same style of animation and dark tone as Zombie Island, in the series we would see the mysteries they find from the beginning of the journey until they reach Simon Lenoir's island, only taking that step of darkness and seriousness that, although it was noticeable, Zombie Island did not have due to being a children's movie. As for the characters, I would develop them a little more on a personal level to give them emotional weight. It would give them their own insecurities, aspirations, etc.
Anyway. I hope to see something like this one day.

Honestly, what i always wanted to a gritty Scooby Doo series is something like Riverdale. not too much like Riverdale ('cause apart season 1 and 2 the rest is a mess) but there's a thing that the show did well: adaping a light-hearted thing in a mystery drama thing. I think the best way to do that show is taking some inspiration from what Riverdale do in their first seasons.
The Mystery Incorporated fan project looks pretty good but i didn't like the choice to do paranormal stuff at the first season. i mean, what i would do if i do a teen mystery Scooby Doo series is to do in the first 2 or 3 seasons of the show just guys who are disguised as monsters and they make believe that they are actually monsters using special effects and in full Scream style they go to kill some people in the town. then in the next seasons introduce the more paranormal aspect of the show, like the Mystery Inc. during an investigation finds out that the main villain is collect something that allows to open a gate from another dimension and with this evocate real monsters and this is the main fulcrum of the last few seasons ( i imagine something like 5 or 6 season for this show).
For Scooby i didn't think that make Scoob a normal dog is a bad idea. you can just make him important to Shaggy (one example of this is 'cause he's the only thing that his father gave to him before his death or something similar). Also i would like if they do a sort of 80s Dog-Cop movie thing where the dog is important to the story to resolve the Mystery, this would be fun.

On paper, a Scooby Doo series aimed at an older audience is a good idea, but it doesn’t need to be necessarily rated R. Just give us the same Scooby Doo charm we know and love but with a bit more of an edge in terms of its humor and tone. Don’t be afraid to add some innuendos about Fred and Daphne’s relationship, or Shaggy being a closeted stoner. Also, it’d be great to experiment more with the concept of real monsters and ghosts like in Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost, or even Mystery Incorporated. Even include some in jokes or appearances from beloved side characters like Scrappy Doo and the Hex Girls. The most important part is to not oversaturate the show with sex and graphic violence. Keep it at a decent balance. I’d also toy with the idea of making the characters older like they were in the original DTV movies, rather than the typical high school juniors and seniors they’ve always been, put them in college and have them solve mysteries while either attending classes or off semester.

I think a R-rated Scooby Doo can definitely work, but like you said, it shouldn’t try to be edgy and “adult.” There’s one element that would be essential to the film, camp. The concept of a talking mystery solving dog is inherently goofy and, if the filmmakers wanted to respect the original IP, they would need to acknowledge and lean into that. It’s not like it would even be that hard to do. Horror comedy is a super popular genre.
But rather than a Scary Movie type horror comedy, I think something more along the lines of a Sam Raimi film would actually work great with the Scooby Doo cast!

@@onepresence9460 Yep agreed. It feels like all this show is doing is to try to cause controversy for ratings and to get people talking about this crap. Of course it is working cause people are losing their minds over this show which is giving the show more popularity. I hope one day we get a proper R rated Scooby-Doo series done with care and that actually has Scooby in it.

If they wanted to make a R-Rated Scooby-Doo cartoon, they should’ve adapted the Scooby Apocalypse comics into a adult animated series on HBO Max. That would’ve been awesome imo.
Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated is definitely the best version period. I love that cartoon.

It would be spectacular if Scooby sorta had a Courage the Cowardly Dog characteristic on the team.
Mystery Inc does what they do: solve mysteries and unmask villains. However, the supernatural aspect of the show is something only Scooby sees, and no one can understand what he’s saying except for Shaggy, who only understands him when he’s blazed out of his mind, and even then, he tends to not realize the severity of the situation.

I’ve wanted an R-rated scooby doo movie/ show since I watched Gunns movies as a kid , the darker premise would just make for more tense situations and higher stakes , the mystery inc gang are all great great characters and I think they could be very nuanced if written correctly , I just want to see shaggy and scooby getting stoned in all honesty

If you're interested in something like this you should watch "the solve-it squad returns" by the tin-can bros. It's a theater production that's clearly a scooby-doo parody while still being a scooby-doo adventure (in a really weird, twisted way). It's fun, it's free on RUclips and you should probably watch it

An R rated live action Scooby-Doo could work. But I think a live action Scooby-Doo HBO Max series would be better. Plus it’s a good idea for Fred dropping the f bomb.

Also, here’s who I would cast for the Scooby-Doo HBO Max series.
    Jacob Hopkins as Fred Jones
    Sadie Stanley as Daphne Blake
    Isabela Merced as Velma Dinkley
Jack Dylan Grazer as Norville “Shaggy” Rogers
Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo (because he’s obviously the best fucking voice for Scooby-Doo!)

Velma is a bi icon, that girl had a thrist for buff and culture dudes for ages. You can have the people of the Cyber chase movie gave them a translator collar. So you can have an older gang being an unit while they are thrown to weird menacing mysteries. Velma should be the knowledge one yet not a expert chemist, Daphne it's handy yet not Mcgyver, Fred is an innate engineer but not a super magnificent and Shaggy past as a gymnast is to away from him so the lack of practice take a toll on him. The gang still do their detective work and surround themselves with a cast of helpers. Have them sending maps and samples to their headquarters at Coolsville.

I feel like a good way to address the fact that at heart Scooby Doo as a franchise is a draw for kids and you even posed the question; "Still for kids?" Is to kinda address it like the early Simpsons. It certainly had some risque moments, but never directly went "Hey Marge, lets have HOT STEAMY INTERCOURSE!!" I think it's a great show to let lead by example as it was very much an adult show, but never got so raunchy even when addressing topics that were progressive at the time. I.e. the episode where he found out his friend was homosexual in "Homer's Phobia" which depicted Homer being afraid because of society's norms at the time and what he had been brought up believing. I think the same thing could be true in alot of ways for an adult Scooby Doo show.
