I just wish Teller would do a full blown TED talk (or something similar). The man has a lot of interesting things to say and a LOT of knowledge regarding both the performance and the psychology of magic.
Teller comes across as just an incredibly gentle guy. Got to go on stage with them to participate in a trick at their Vegas show, and he did an excellent job at keeping nervous little me calm. Both him and Penn seem very aware of the social cues of others and of how to keep volunteers comfortable and enjoying themselves. That's one of the reasons I admire them so much - I've seem so many videos where the volunteer(s) get uncomfortable for some reason, and the trick just feels awkward for the rest of the time. They both make sure to notice the beginnings of nervous tensions and Teller particularly does an amazing job at soothing those nerves. I respect both of them so much. Just wow.
Fascinating stuff. Always knew Teller not speaking was an act so interesting to hear him finally for the first time but what he was saying here was really fascinating and interesting too. No wonder they are such great magicians! :)
Now THAT is a great explanation of what magic is. It isn't about the great trick. It is about what the magician is 'making' you see. The story of the trick.
Omg, he is such an incredible slight of hand magician! They way he pretends to put the ball in his hand is so clean, that even if I already know that he's pretending, it still fools me.
An eloquent summary of how the mind comes to conclusions based on familiar actions. And presented in true form by a true artist. Teller knows his stuff! BRAVO! (Uh.. I mean, SHOWTIME!)
This is a great, fascinating and informative video. I've like many of you have grown up watching Penn and Teller. I was not only floored with hearing him talk but also with the words in which he spoke. Very wise man as well as Penn. Dynamic duo.
I read a little about his life on Wikipedia. He used to be a high school teacher that taught Latin...and Greek! This guy is no dummy. He doesn't speak because when he was supporting himself in college by doing magic at frat parties and the like, he found that if he stayed silent they were less likely to boo and throw beer at him. He just stayed with it because it is effective. Very cool dude.
...Apres a performance in Los Angeles in the 1980's Mr. Teller pulled a card out of my hair and gave it to me. I still have it, the Queen of Hearts and I remain Enamoured. :+)
in a interview, teller says that he does not talk in is shows because it makes the shows more interesting, you as the person, needs to figure out what is happening.
he also finds that when performing in front of more difficult audiences as an upstart noone wants to heckle a mute guy cause they'll feel like an asshole.
I see his point in that it's a lot of power of suggestion but I think it's also a lot of pure skill. Even when I really study what he's doing as he's explaining it, it still really looks like he's putting the ball in his other hand when he's not. That's just amazing skill IMO.
Teller is truly amazing at what he does. We need more videos of him doing his thang. Penn andTteller are fantastic together but Teller by himself is a whole other thing.
Teller is one of the most underestimated magicians and, quite frankly, speakers in my opinion. His sleight of hand is masterful. He would make a good teacher come to think of it.
Indeed, he started doing the silent bit while performing for groups of college students. He found that they shut up and paid more attention/less heckling to a silent magician than someone who was talking.
I always expected either low deep voice or a light edgy voice...but it's....casual...and relaxing....oh and comments are right....he does sound like Kermit The Frog XD
I understand why he doesn't talk now, I think he is too nervous to talk, but when he performs, he is INCREDIBLE! Plus, Penn talks enough for the both of them. ^^ On a more serious note, I find him to be a magnificent individual who really shouldn't be so nervous. He is so captivating, even when he "dropped the ball", he probably felt very anxious, but if the people in the audience are anything like me, they could have cared less, because all they wanted was to hear and see him.
This is like the opposite of hearing someone's voice on the radio for years and then seeing what they look like. His voice isn't how I would imagine it.
Teller taught highschool Latin. That's not a job for someone who can't think on his feet, or work with words. I'm glad that his career has reached the point where it's just fine that people can hear him speak and not mess with the "illusion" of the show. Two years ago he "appeared" on History channel show about Houdini, they had him back-lit like a mafia informant so he could talk without being "seen".
Harpo began his unusual and rare public speech by saying, 'unaccustomed as I am to speaking' which got him a huge laugh. I can't help but like Penn and Teller despite that little bump in the road some years ago when they did that TV show, they got on my bad side just a bit, but no matter I guess one learns to filter out the stuff they don't like and relish the good things.
Omg his voice is so soothing, like some British professor.Idk why one time on Fool Us someone asked him to recite a poem and he pointed his middle finger
For all those who couldn't believe that Teller actually talks outside of performance & find difficulty believing this is what he sounds like......... Please accept him for who he is, not who you want him to be, & in light of any disappointment you might have felt at him not being what you expected, try to embrace the beautiful truth in what he actually has to say, & that now you finally know he can. That is all :o)
A few years ago I ran into him in New York City, and I was dumb founded, cause he said something and up to that point I didn't know that he could talk.
It's amazing how much you can learn from 8 minutes of talking from a man who make's his career from being silent. Teller is incredibly gifted in illusions, and I'm surprised at his knowledge on the subject
His voice is so relaxing.
It is. And filled with wise words. We recommend listening closely to anything Teller talks about, particularly magic, theater, and art.
Joshua Albaladejo So true
It is so well-rested. lol
I just wish Teller would do a full blown TED talk (or something similar). The man has a lot of interesting things to say and a LOT of knowledge regarding both the performance and the psychology of magic.
We'd watch that, for sure.
His voice is NOT what I expected! It's actually very soothing if I'm gonna be perfectly honest.
Honestly I expected a soprano, not a tenor.
This dude is overwhelmingly smart
+Brad Bognar Yes he is!
....and Adorable.
I'm surprised by how old he is, can't believe he's 70 next year o.0
Right? He looks way younger.
Ellusionist Good to know even after 9 years you guys still are active on this video
As long as we keep getting notifications we'll keep responding :)
Ellusionist Respect.
Hes 71 next year

Wow. Got to hear his voice *AND* learned how to do magic. Nice.
Fascinating stuff. Always knew Teller not speaking was an act so interesting to hear him finally for the first time but what he was saying here was really fascinating and interesting too. No wonder they are such great magicians! :)
i just realized that his voice sounds like a clear kermit the frog, kinda cool :D
I love that someone in the crowd goes "Oh! He's talking!"...While speaking at a conference.
Now THAT is a great explanation of what magic is. It isn't about the great trick. It is about what the magician is 'making' you see. The story of the trick.
I clicked into this video and got a masterclass ad for penn and teller not even joking
Omg, he is such an incredible slight of hand magician! They way he pretends to put the ball in his hand is so clean, that even if I already know that he's pretending, it still fools me.
He's one of the best in the world.
I could listen to him talk about magic all day.
That would be a day well spent.
My wife and I spent an evening with Teller about 10 years ago and found him to be a completely charming man.
An eloquent summary of how the mind comes to conclusions based on familiar actions. And presented in true form by a true artist. Teller knows his stuff! BRAVO! (Uh.. I mean, SHOWTIME!)
Wow, it's just amazing to finally hear him speak. I've been watching him for years and to hear him speak is enlightening.
Plot twist: He's a mute man and it's just a magic trick
Maybe, that would be clever, but I have heard his voice in other clips, and this is consistent.
I believe this to be true.
This is a great, fascinating and informative video. I've like many of you have grown up watching Penn and Teller. I was not only floored with hearing him talk but also with the words in which he spoke. Very wise man as well as Penn. Dynamic duo.
So calming. So adorable. I wish I could just keep him forever
Daddy always said 'it's the shy quiet ones you have to watch out for'....
Plot twist: There's someone off stage talking into a microphone
Sh! Don't ruin it.
Just brilliant!

.....Mr. Teller is the Best & Most Adorable.
He is pretty timeless. Hasn't changed much in decades.
...Apres a performance in Los Angeles in the 1980's Mr. Teller pulled a card out of my hair and gave it to me. I still have it, the Queen of Hearts and I remain Enamoured. :+)
lucky I've never been to a show is it awesome
His voice is pure magic
in a interview, teller says that he does not talk in is shows because it makes the shows more interesting, you as the person, needs to figure out what is happening.
he also finds that when performing in front of more difficult audiences as an upstart noone wants to heckle a mute guy cause they'll feel like an asshole.
Wow, he just blew my mind. Thanks for uploading this, Ellusionist.
I was just smiling throughout the video.
Appropriate response.
I see his point in that it's a lot of power of suggestion but I think it's also a lot of pure skill. Even when I really study what he's doing as he's explaining it, it still really looks like he's putting the ball in his other hand when he's not. That's just amazing skill IMO.
It's so cool to hear him talking again!
I met him a couple years ago and it was really crazy to actually talk TO him. =D
He's so nice. ^_^
they should have got penn there to say "and now for our most elaborate magic trick..." then teller could just say "hello..."
He has such a gentle voice!
Teller is truly amazing at what he does. We need more videos of him doing his thang. Penn andTteller are fantastic together but Teller by himself is a whole other thing.
His rose trick is amazing. We'll worth watching if you haven't seen it
I was expecting him to sound like gilbert godfreid
Singularly brilliant walk through perception and rote learning. I want this chap at my next music education workshop!
Cheers from Rochester!

Teller is one of the most underestimated magicians and, quite frankly, speakers in my opinion. His sleight of hand is masterful.
He would make a good teacher come to think of it.
Teller is amazing at what he does, and he has a nice voice TOO! Yay!
So delightful to see a real professional at work, doing what he does best, and doing it so well.
Honestly thought he would sound exactly like that. He gave great advice advice for magic as well
He knows a thing or two about magic.
@@ellusionist just a handful of things. Not too much tho :)
Janel was an emotional individual; she was perfect for this.
Damn, thats really interesting.
Teller isnt not just able to perform, but he also fully understand what the phenomena is.
Its marvelous.
Hearing how it's done only makes it more remarkable for me! Cool stuff!
Still impressing after so many years!
+Martin Ortiz Hidalgo Teller just gets better as time goes on. Like fine wine.
+Ellusionist lol, how long does it take to come up with these comments😂
No time at all. That's why they pay us the big bucks.
+Ellusionist 😂😂😂
usually his genius is released in bursts but when he's TALKING while doing his amazing tricks it's an OVERLOAD.
Good Video!
He should have brought Penn up there and done a live performance of bullshit with him talking and penn being the mute
That was awesome. Very great way to state those ideas.
I have met teller I can safely say that's his voice
Wow! I love his voice! It reminded me of christian bale’s.
He even told me how he did it, but I still don't k ow how he did the glasses
we can all die in peace now
With that sweet, soothing voice echoing in our ears.
Ellusionist Teller vs Bob Ross.
Epic Rap Battles of History?
They already did a Bob Ross, though.
Ellusionist
No, I just mean for most calming voice. Bob Ross wins in my opinion.
Teller and Silent Bob need to do a movie together. I'd pay ten bucks to see that!
I have barely seen Peen&Teller and I was amazed to see Teller talk!!!! so yeah that's why i'm suprised^_^
I understand why he doesn't talk now, I think he is too nervous to talk, but when he performs, he is INCREDIBLE! Plus, Penn talks enough for the both of them. ^^

1. He has the silky voice of an angel.
2. He explained the trick but i was watching it and still no understanding it.
wow, so fast, even when he shows it and explains you still don't catch the move...hes THAT good
I never thought I'd be so excited over seeing a grown man with no vocal impairment whatsoever talking
He has a much higher voice than I thought he would.
This is like the opposite of hearing someone's voice on the radio for years and then seeing what they look like. His voice isn't how I would imagine it.
Sounds nothing like I expected. He speaks very well.
I did not expect him to have that kind of voice! Haha, thats awesome!
mind blowing is right.... this man is truly amazing... much respect.. i still want to know how he does the bullet catch however.
Teller taught highschool Latin. That's not a job for someone who can't think on his feet, or work with words.

i have now heard teller's voice. i can die happy now.
Awesome, i have been waiting ofr years to hear his voice. I taught it would be a bit more squeeky. Go Teller :D
Teller is fantastic silent and speaking!
much softer voice than I thought he'd have
Harpo began his unusual and rare public speech by saying, 'unaccustomed as I am to speaking' which got him a huge laugh. I can't help but like Penn and Teller despite that little bump in the road some years ago when they did that TV show, they got on my bad side just a bit, but no matter I guess one learns to filter out the stuff they don't like and relish the good things.
was i the only one expecting a high pitched voice...
No, you were not. I was too.
Omg his voice is so soothing, like some British professor.Idk why one time on Fool Us someone asked him to recite a poem and he pointed his middle finger
He used to be a Latin teacher, so ....
He has often responded in similar ways when people ask him to speak when he's in character.
I like his voice..very nice.
He's so adorkable. =] I love P&T.
Thank you Teller. Holy. Shit. Mate.
I'm sure he'd say you're welcome. Or at least gesture.
Ellusionist Maybe one of those cute smiles and little head bows he does. Such a Delight.
Holy shit he can talk
Shh .. you'll spook him.
ahahahahahahahahahah 😂😂
Teller is fraking amzaing! I knew that he had those coins palmed but I just couldn't tell. Amazing!
I wish there was more because its a great rare insight
this is a great video........i learnt something ......thanks
his voice is beautiful :3
8-O teller actually talked! Awsome advice!!!
HIS VOICE IS NOTHING LIKE I IMAGINED.
I think this is the first time i've actually learned something from a magician...(besides magic tricks of course)
He has a very nice voice!
this is more inspiring than the kings speech
excellent video, tellers a genius!
he would be the best teacher with that voice
thats not weird
Well, he used to be a teacher, so makes sense to me.
MY MIND CANNOT HANDLE THIS.
I'd always assumed that Teller wasn't a good public speaker - hence the mute act - but this video kills that theory. Speak more, Teller!
A few years ago I ran into him in New York City, and I was dumb founded, cause he said something and up to that point I didn't know that he could talk.
wow, i didnt think his voice would sound like that
It's very interesting. He doesn't sound at all like what I thought he'd sound like...
he can keep his mouth shut and know enough about what's going on in the room.
SURPRISE!
he is brilliant!
Wow, he sounds exactly as I imagined he would. I do agree with @allstar2719.... a British accent would definitely suit him.
It's amazing how much you can learn from 8 minutes of talking from a man who make's his career from being silent.
Teller is incredibly gifted in illusions, and I'm surprised at his knowledge on the subject
You are so right that bit is hilarious!
