Finally someone who knows how to make a good "how to" video. Fantastic!!
+Josh Walters Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
So the three ways you did it I can do the first method to all the rivets and will be fine? I just don’t have the chizzle or the grinder
Just did this job and this video made it a lot easier to do. Now just have to go get her alined and maybe replace the front tires
You need a little Tap Magic to lubricate and cool the metal, and to use slower speeds with larger drills for more effective drilling.
You guys are a life saver. I need to perform this on my equinox. You guys made this video just in time. Thumbs up.
i need this done on my equinox as well. The boot has been torn and im getting a loud clunk noise when i turn the wheel all the way to the right. It just recently started making a pretty loud roaring sound when driving that i cannot diagnose. I can just hear it coming from that front end. Im just curious what your symptoms where for a bad ball joint?
Update. My loud roaring noise was a bad wheel bearing. I installed both fronts today and no more loud noises from the front.
@@johondarr2530 ball joint makes a knocking noise on rougher road... here in Canada in the winter it’s easy to diagnose.
For those of you doing this crawling around on your back and using jack stands, do yourself a favor...take the control arm off. So much easier to drill those rivets out!

Noted
This is a great video, I did start with the intent of replacing just he ball joint however after the aggravation of having to grind, drill, chisel and cut the old rivets out I returned the ball joint and just replaced the entire control arm. You save maybe $30 by doing just the ball joint but it’ll take you 5 x’s as long. Save the aggravation and just do the entire control arm with integrated ball joint but make sure to get the arm with the bolt on ball joint. This isn’t for lack of ability I’ve been a ticketed heavy duty mechanic for 20+ years; this is an example of picking your battles.
Another issue he's not running into is depending on the brand of ball joint you get like i usually use moog brand and the bolts that come with moog has to have the lower control arms 3 mounting holes drilled out to accommodate the bigger bolts that come with the moog branded ball joints
thanks for this video. doing mine today!
Thanks for the repair help, Freddy prinze jr.!
Man I wish I saw this video before I agreed to help 😂😂😂😭😭
I couldn’t get the eye side of the cotter pin out after cutting off the excess so I just turned the nut and it sheered the eye of the pin off.
Much better than the woman who removes the oil filter first, then removed the drain plug after.
Very good job 👏
Next time save time by grinding the heads off the rivets and punching it out with a punch Use a grinder And keep the drill and your tool Box Can do it in half the time
And this chips the drill bits. Increasing size in such small increments
glad you showed all 3 methods... during method 1 I was thinking oh man that's way too much time x 6 rivets lol and was saying to myself i'd just do the X method.. thanks for the video!
Anyone else see that he cracks the first hole from trying to beat it out before it was loose???
You guys are awesome 👌 thank you
Is there much problems if you put the cotter pin in and then tighten the three bolts?
glad u didn't take the whole spindle apart like the last guy lol 😆
who makes your ball joint fork. i have used a couple and the forks just break. yours looks heavy duty. i know you can even get a ball joint fork for an air chisel
I got the brand Moog for my lower ball joints but the bolts don't fit. I was told to drill the holes out to 1/2in. What do you all think on this?
Ran into that problem what did you end up doing?
Even Chevy does the same it happened to me and I just drilled it it’s not too hard
Hi, question? when you drilled the first hole and egg shaped it, did you by chance fix the hole or just throw a bole in it? lol
Whats the opening size of the fork? Want to buy one to do my 2013 chevy equinox 2.4. Thanks.
Great vid...
Beautiful best video ever
Can you drill the rivets out from the top side of the control arm?
If you remove the control arm.
Thank you excellent
Great video!
+94Elantra Thank you for your feedback!
2014 CHEVROLET EQUINOX thanks.
Are the washers necessary?
In terms of labor cost and time, is it cheaper to drill out and replace just the ball joint?
Or replace the entire lower control arm which includes a new ball joint?
What is nice about the ball joint only approach is that some have the grease fittings.
COBALT drill bits would have been less work and longer drill life 😂
I remember my first time using a drill.
Take the control arm off...much easier
It's nice that he is doing a rear ball joint and not a front one! Front wheels have coil springs!
Drilling to fast, you got to do it at slow speed! Good work!
+Georgescu Iulian Thanks for the feedback!
Drills are meant to be run at high speed aren’t they?
Why not do the x and air chisel for all of them?
My assumption is to show people who don't have all those tools how to do it with tools they have.
He was just showing us different ways to remove the rivets.
By all that is holy, I hope mine arnt riveted.
Yea, I think I'll just replace the whole control arm. Ain't no body got time to be hacking and drilling at rivets.. Nice job tho.
A good drill bit actually went through them like butter. Took me about 2 minutes to go through all 3 of them.
Just got done doing this job and to be honest, I don't think replacing the entire control arm would have been much easier.
I used the X's with the cutting wheel and air hammer method. Didn't take too long and once the rivets we're out the rest was a cake walk
I rather just replace the whole lower control arm.
Omg... Just buy the lower control arm with the lower ball joint installed. The lower control arm bushings are cracked just like those ball joint bushings I BET, then you will have new bushings for the lower control arm lmfao. Drilling out rivets lmfao wow
It's painful to watch the drilling at such high speeds. You're wrecking the drill bit and heat treating the metal. Slow down the drill, use more cooling lubricant.
Where is your garage 😅
brooooo use a 1/4 " × 4" grinding wheel 🤷
Dude what are the torque specs?
+Ryan Baggarly Ball Joint:
Tighten, then torque the 17 mm nuts onto the 17 mm ball joint bolts to 50 ft-lb
Tighten the 18 mm castle nut onto the ball joint stud
Torque the 18 mm castle nut to 89 in-lb, followed by an additional 155 to 175 degree turn
Wheel: Install and tighten the 22 mm lug nuts by hand
Lower the vehicle with minimal weight on the wheel
Torque the lug nuts to 140 ft-lb in a star pattern
Thank u
If that's all it takes then why is it gonna cost me over $500 to get fixed??
Don’t be like Walmart. Take the covers off the lug nuts lol. Pretty soon they’re going to start spinning and cracking.
+Stone DeLorey Thanks for the feedback!
