Do you prefer making "walk and talk" or vlog style videos like this? Or do you prefer being stationary, sitting down with a tripod... and if so, inside or outside?
I think I prefer making walk & talk although I find it trickier. Camera tends to go all over the place and I lose track of what I planned to say 😅 All part of the learning process though 👍🏻 There’s also a vanity aspect 😉 If I’m sitting I can make sure the light is flattering to my skin, but walking, especially amongst trees where you’re moving between bright sun and shade, I’ve had plenty of “OMG is my face REALLY that wrinkled?? 😱😱’ moments. I do leave them in though 😊
I prefer when you are sitting in the "studio". It is a more relaxed setting. Of course I noticed the windnoise in one of your video's and indeed I decided to stop that video and come back at the next video. No real harm done. The nice thing is that different people like different things. Some people care about good audio while others don't care so much. There are people who like the presentator of the video to appear in a nice suit while for others a T-shirt is preferred. Everybody has different preferences, and we don't have to like what other people like. Eventually RUclips knows pretty well what we prefer. I can't really say I prefer super unedited videos over edited videos. To be honest I don't believe in a real authentic version of yourself. Everybody reacts different depending on the situation and all of it is your authentic you. If you get in an argument with your employer, you behave different then when you are in playing with your children. (at least I hope so), and that is different than when you are hanging out with your friends. These are all authentic versions of you. I don't really think that editing "mistakes" or weird distracting noises out of a video is bad. Leaving absolutely no room for errors might look a bit unauthentic for you, but I don't mind a more "perfect looking" video. Your most viewed video is an unedited video. I understand why you think that not editing a video is the key to making great videos but I doubt that this is what makes the big difference. I think in most situations the content is the most important part of a video. In that specific video the content was something that a lot of people wanted to hear and you told them and motivated them to create a channel and live their dreams. Sure, when you give such a message it is indeed best to show authentic because then people know that you mean it. It was an inspirational video. This video was more an educational video and perhaps more B-roll to explain better what you mean would be more appropriate in this situation. Keep in mind that there are a lot of content creators who just use a teleprompter and get way more views than your most viewed video. For them a teleprompter is the way to go. I personally think that it completely depends on the situation and the message that you want to bring across. An inspirational video with a message that comes from your heart is probably best made without to much editing but an educational video where you try to explain a difficult topic might be explained best with perhaps graphs and drawings and animations as B-roll. As most things in life, it depends on the situation.
As, I am doing a 30 day walking and video making challenge, I’m most definitely out walking and talking but hope to sometime in the future to be able to sit and make content in my office 😊
I feel that a good solution for reducing the unpredictability of this is to use a gimbal and perhaps automated face detection, so that the camera is turned towards you at all times. Having a bit of a zoom out level could give you a little bit of a fisheye effect but it will give you a lot of room to pan around and re-center yourself if you drift off to one side.
I love your walk and talks. You're practicing the technique and sharing it with us at the same time, which is really inspiring! I've been thinking about this for a while and now I'm going to do it. I ended up buying the RØDE - WIRELESS ME Ultra-Compact Wireless Microphone System. My local Best Buy had it and it was only $149 USD. I'm going to start this week! I live in Minnesota and there's no shortage of beautiful, woody trails to walk the dog and record videos on. Keep up the great work! Really enjoying your videos. Cheers!
Thank you so much Angela, and good for you for starting! I've heard lots of great things about the RODE Wireless ME so I'm sure you'll be happy with that. Good luck with it and have fun!! :-)
Great question. I'm glad someone asked as I was thinking the same. Thanks Rob, this info. is very helpful. I wish I could join the livestream however I work at this time...will watch the replay. I'm really enjoying the outdoor videos, I'm inspired to take more walks in nature!
always enjoy watching your vlogs, you have inspired me to start, me being 47. I do Instagram, but mostly pics. Taking first steps slowly and and just roll of the tongue commentary doing it.
Considering that you couldn't see the screen, your framing was really impressive! For much of the video you had the 1/3rd - 1/3rd framing and it was in favor of the direction that you were walking. Most people can't do that even if they were watching the screen. Well done!!
I LOVE those videos with the paint balloons, or whatever they are When I have them show up in my feed I thoroughly enjoy them. Rob you are a very helpful guy, and I am biased because I'm in Halifax, but I love listening to you talk. You sound like me, LOL! That beautiful east coast drawl. My number one rule for myself, my life, "If I can't laugh at myself, I have no right to laugh at others. And Brother, I'm hilarious." I've tried various microphones, on various cameras, none of which I'm real happy with. I'm not real comfortable with my Galaxy phone on a selfie stick yet. I don't mind moving around, but also don't mind staying in one spot, camera on a tripod. Once I figure things out, I'll be able to say I'm a real RUclipsr, not just a pretender.
Rob. Can you show us how you are holding the camera? It doesn't appear your arm is outstretched. Are you using a selfie stick? Doesn't your are get tired?
Absolutely! I'm getting a lot of questions about this so that means I need to make a video about it ;-) I've got my iPhone on a GorillaPod and am using a QuadLock case and tripod adapter... links to all are below so you can see what they look like. But that said, I'll make a video showing it shortly :-)
A lot of cameras used for vlogging have image stabilization and face tracking. Have you considered that? I have a DJI Osmo that I need to take the dust off of and start doing some walking videos.
@@TechforSenior The DJI Osmo I think is a great camera... never used it myself but have heard lots of good things about it. I'm a DJI fan :-) As for stabilization, I do have "Enhanced Stabilization" enabled in my iPhone 14 so that helps with that. No face tracking though... but I'm ok with the results I'm getting 🙂
I stated in my very first vlog on my channel that I was starting it way before I had anything much to record, simply because I hadn’t a clue what I was doing and the videos would be terrible 😂 I think I’ve even gone downhill! My most recent is genuinely awful editing and the content didn’t match my expectations. But it’s there anyway, because I made it, and editing it took so much time that I wasn’t going to bin it 😎

I'm interested in the post-production process. Do you edit your walk and talk videos? Do you download them to your PC? How do you upload them to RUclips? Thanks!
I plan on showing that in the live stream that starts in about an hour! But in case you can't tune in, YES I edit my walk and talk videos. I Airdrop them from my iPhone to my Macbook when I get back to the office... and then I edit them in Camtasia. I don't do much editing in most of these... but at minimum I'll remove the bad takes at the beginning (there are always some!) and I'll trim the ending and maybe add a fade... and usually add the closing music at the end. Then I export/render the video... and then I upload it to youtube from my Macbook. I hope that helps! Feel free to ask any questions in the live stream... or here in the comments. Cheers :-)
@RobtheMaritimer : Yes that really helps! I think it is possible to upload directly to RUclips from a smart phone but I suppose that's not recommended!
