I am in AWE!!! What an amazing work and what a patience! Amazing! Amazing! Amaaaazing! Loved it so much and so inspiring! I would definitely stay all day watching more of these! New subscriber here, keep up the great work!!
This is an art very few know how to do these days, you did an incredible job. I myself am in animation school and hope to one day make a whole movie using only traditional methods. I hope I can pull it off. We need this aesthetic Brough back.
I agree, I love the old stuff, especially from the 60's and 70's. It wasn't just the hand drawn aspect, the art direction was great overall, go back and look at some of the old backgrounds, they were really fantastic. I hope, one day, you make that movie.
Sure thing. A friend of mine has an authentic cel from the disney store and I never really liked the way the celluloid "hangs". You have to remember, cels were never meant to be sold. There was a time they were burnt or cleaned and re-used. It was meant to be photographed on the background while laying flat. As a result when you frame and hang cels you get a wonky reflection in the celluloid. Maybe I'm just OCD, but that really bugs me. I'm not trying to fool people into thinking these are the real thing, so I don't feel the need to make them authentic. As for the choice of ink, I needed something to draw the linework with and my first choice was a technical pen (I used to use them in highschool drafting class) so I was familiar with them. Acetate ink is the only thing that won't pool/bead up on the glass. Unfortunately water based paint, like acrylic smudges the linework, so it had to be enamel. I also found that acrylic can leave an uneven finish, it can appear to have swirls in it after it's dry. I am working on a new technique now where I screen print the linework onto the glass with a solvent ink. I'm think I'm going to try Flashe vinyl paint for the colors ( I haven't been able to find any authentic vinyl cel paints). Hope this helps😀
I don't like the way acetate buckles and has a wonky, warped reflection. I've seen it in actual store-bought disney cels. Since I have no intention of passing these off as authentic, I prefer to use glass.
@@RichardThompsonCA please do more Hanna Barbera cartoons pls... Adams family Popeye and maybe pink panther ?? It's art style is so unique . Can you also do tutorials for drawing backgrounds paintings? It's so cool
@@rodi2641 I'm definitely going to do a pink panther, I've been gathering reference for it. I'd like to do tutorials for the painting part, but there's already so many great painters on RUclips doing tuts. It would make the video really long, and I live out in the country, it would take days to upload, if it finished at all.
@@hectormanuel8360 That's true, but the problem with these as a physical item is they are heavy and delicate (because of the glass involved) which makes them a nightmare to ship. I'm currently working on creating items for my store (richardthompson.ca) but I don't think these will work out as a viable product.
Incredible work. I wasn't even expecting a hand-painted background and it's the most amazing part of the vid.
The degree of style restoration is really similar!
I love this. Nothing can replace the magic of hand drawn cel animation.
I completely agree!
Loved every second of this!
Thanks!
This was thorough, educational, and very intriguing.
Thanks!

Love your work ! Do you have a tip for getting two pieces of glass in same size? do you cut them yourself or order them bulk?
I get them cut to size for me, either from the local hardware store or a glass shop.
Great video. Lots of important information. Can I ask why you use glass and enamel paints, rather than celluloid or Dura-Lar and acrylics? Thanks

Cel animation is coming back.
I certainly hope so :-)

Is the ink your using archival quality? :O
I haven't found any info from the manufacturer on that but I do have cels hanging on my wall that I created 20 years ago and they haven't faded yet.
GRAND DAD!?
🌸😍👏👏👏👏👏👍💯💯i like it
Thank you! Cheers!
from wher you buy the frames and the glass you use .. ?🙏
The frames were from Michael's arts and crafts store. The glass is from a local glass shop. Just standard picture frame glass.
Richard Thompson thank you very much 🙏✨😇
Why did you use glass instead of a transparent sheet?
I don't like the way acetate buckles and has a wonky, warped reflection. I've seen it in actual store-bought disney cels. Since I have no intention of passing these off as authentic, I prefer to use glass.
Do more pleses
What size masonite did you use
The masonite is 16 x 20 inches and 1/4 of an inch thick.
You think you can make a SpongeBob SquarePants animation cel?
Lol, no sorry, I hated spongebob. I only do cels of shows I liked as a kid.
