Playing Xenogears for the first time! 17 hours in and I’m loving it so much. It’s already made a case for being in my top 10-15 favorite RPGs of all time. Every bit of it continues to impress me - it’s incredibly cinematic, bursting with wild ideas, interesting characters, creative-varied gameplay and a super fun combat system, deep world-building and lore, great aesthetics and art work, and just… has such a “cool” factor to it. Plus mechs!!!
Ok I'm 9 days late to your comment, but if you haven't gotten to it, disc 2 is heavily criticized for its instant flip on storytelling. I won't highlight how so you can form your own opinion, but just a heads up. Me? I loved every bit of it, and I enjoy most of Takahashi's works, even if they get released totally incomplete in the bigger picture. I suggest having a good look at the Xeno wiki when you finish, because there's a *TON* of unexplored lore that will fill gaps and give broader context. And yeah, Plus mechs😁 Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of my alltime favorite games, because its massively open-world, character/class creation, and in and out of Gear-ish mechs at-will (even in combat.) It's a shame, because it's a Wii-U game with lore for a sequel, but became a one-off that Takahashi confirmed will never be re-released (map function relies on the controller.) Depressing, but such is life.
A list that includes LoD, Lost Odyssey and Xenogears? Man I thought it was a list of my top 10 at first lol I wish all of these got sequels. I would so eat it up
Man, nobody ever puts Threads of Fate on these lists. Threads of Fate is one of the best PS1 games and a sequel was even teased in the true ending. I was so mad for so many years that it never got a sequel. Now, I've just given up hope completely.

I argue that rather than a sequel, that The Legend of Dragoon deserves a remake & prequel. There is so much that happens before the events of the game that it be worth playing through especially with the prior Dragoon Spirit Holders in the Wingly Dragon Campaign War. With a remake it's obvious so much they could improve upon to truly make it better. A better translation, consistent & improved voice acting, updated graphics, better stat balancing for characters like Rose, give Shana & Miranda actual cool additions & not have the exact same stats,(seriously it never made sense why Miranda was as weak as Shana especially since she was a trained warrior unlike Shana prior her joining), different weapons designs visually, bigger inventory capacity, easier inventory sorting management.
So true, they had (have?) so much lore to work with. They even vaguely teased a possible sequel on the ~fin~ screen. Remaster has been a no-brainer for a long time, and I'm sure Sony hasn't heard the last of it.

Also, not having mech combat while alot of enemies themselves are/have mechs was kind of a bummer coming from the prior Xeno games. What's most depressing to me is the treatment Blade-X got. I think there was a latent bias because A: It came out late on a system that was almost a commercial fail, and B: it was nothing like the other Blade entries. It's one of my alltime favorite game, and I can write essays about it. Character creation, classes that could be hybridized, seamless, HUGE open-world with incredible music, mechs that you could customize, take out into the world, explore, fight in and out of them in combat, gigantic enemies to take on. If it had come out on a more successful system, it would've been an instant classic. Too bad that a chunk of its gameplay relied on the cntroller screen, and Takahashi said "it would be difficult to remaster/port" which is Japanese for hell no. I would have also loved another new game after Terranigma. I generally agree with your mentions. I'd loooove a new Skies of Arcadia and LoD. Also a new Mother game but that won't happen.
I'm a Xenogears superfan as well but I genuinely wouldn't want it to have a sequel. I just don't like it when stories which feel conclusive in a self-contained manner get add-ons for no reason. Now, as conclusive as Xenogears feels by the end of its run, I can't deny the final "XENOGEARS Episode V The End". The thing is, I don't see how you make Episodes II to IV in a fashion which fits well with Episode V without completely reframing it to accommodate the recurrence present until that episode. You'd also be taking the focus away from Fei's dissociative identity disorder, which I can't help but see as a terrible idea. I'm not confident the plot can stand on the other Contacts' and Antitypes' two feet the way Fei and Elly fly on their shared wings in Episode V. That being said, Xenosaga managed to keep me hooked with Shion outside the spotlight for long stretches of Episodes I and II. Speaking of, when it comes to Episode I, Xenosaga's intergalactic odyssey sort of fits the bill. Furthermore, I'd rather have it as a spiritual successor than insist on shoehorning everything into the Xenogears universe, it allows them to play around with more ideas. Finally, the end of Xenoblade 2 is the only reasonable way to even imply a Xeno Episode VI. For the aforementioned reasons, it is my belief that Xenogears can and has very well done without a sequel, thanks in part to the merits of Xenosaga (which is the Xeno series I would've liked to see more of, it's a shame they had to cram so much stuff into Episode III and couldn't pace everything as initially planned, because I wholeheartedly believe in Takahashi's and Soraya Saga's vision) and Xenoblade 2, but mostly as a result of how paradoxically well-realised it was for its creators' overambitious conception. But, who knows? I would have probably said the same thing about the original Mother back in the day and I would've missed out on what's possibly my favourite game of all time in Mother 3.
I love just how much you love Xenogears. You've mentioned it in several different videos, so knowing we both think very highly of this game, you've become a good source of opinions as to which series I should play next. Definitely gonna give The Legend of Dragoon and Skies of Arcadia a try one day and hopefully finally get to play Lost Odyssey even though it will probably never be ported based on what Sakaguchi said recently.
Lost Odyssey is one of the most underrated games of all time. Since it was an exclusive on the Xbox 360 and most RPGs were on the PS3 at the time next to nobody played it. Really hoping for a remaster or remake some day.
Since you didn't mention it in the video Lost Odyssey can be played via backwards compatibility on any Xbox back to the original VCR Xbone and is available to buy digitally and for pretty cheap too. I bought it at release and recently replayed it this way and it works great since it gets some additional graphical filtering and faster loading times.
In the same line of Rogue Galaxy, I wish that White Knight Chronicles had a chance to evolve, but this time written by someone who knows what they're doing, and a more player-friendly droprate....
When you hit the mic! 😂 It's not a traditional JRPG, exactly, but Azure Dreams had a fairly robust for the time dating element, and also could've used a sequel. Great work as always!
You explained my issue with Rogue Galaxy perfectly well, and it's why I still haven't been able to finish it, love the characters, setting, music, but it has too many questionable choices.
I love your videos. I would like to see a Child of light sequel. It was such a fun and interesting game. I always recommend it to people looking shorter game that still packs a punch.
This is going to be a very spicy opinion, but I've been thinking about it for a while, and I think there's way too much meat left on the bone with this one. The game I think deserves a sequel is... Final Fantasy VIII. I think the first game focused too much on trying to be a big, romantic epic that it overlooked what was happening in the wider world... so much so that by the end of the game, there's a lot left unresolved. Ok, so you beat Ultimecia and stopped time compression. Galbadia, a militaristic totalitarian empire, is now leaderless. Do you know what happens when a nation led by a dictator suddenly no longer has a dictator? Factionalism. War. I want to see the aftermath of FFVIII... a world without sorceresses. What does SeeD do? You've got all these people trained to fight against the sorceress with no more sorceress to fight. History tells us that when soldiers go unemployed, they turn to mercenary work or banditry. Or are you going to tell me Seifer's content to just fish for the rest of his life? You see what I mean? Final Fantasy VIII basically only tells half of a story. A happy ending for Squall and Rinoa maybe... but just them.
I can’t help but despise secret of evermore. The magic system was crap, no multiplayer, leveling weapons was pointless since Cecil from FF4 gives you a bazooka, and the dog can do max damage when it becomes a toaster.
I’ve seen all from 1980-Now I have every NTSC-U and NTSC-J console as well as tons of games what a life of gaming every game you named here is good and well deserves a sequel I enjoy RPGs I have every Super Nintendo/Super Famicom PS1 and PS2 RPGs all the memories throughout the decades
Rogue Galaxy is an amazing game, and while I agree in a couple cons you mention, it is a bit far fetched the one about sci-fi RPG and you can't control or ship. Even Mass Effect, coming years later, with much better engines, does not let you control your ship besides one simple mechanic. But hey, thank you again for an amazing video. Love your Broductions ;)
Yeahhh, I feel that about Legend of Dragoon. It was so damn GOOD back in the day. Great memories of it. Playing it again a few years back, it was still good but didnt hit near as hard. Made me want to play FFIX 😂 Kinda like Outlaw Star, it was a great show but rewatching it, some of the flaws show a bit more. Still good! Still recommended! Not quite as rabidly defended 😅
I couldn't get anywhere in Legend of Dragoon, I'm bad at the timing, and couldn't use anything but the most basic combos, and even then I couldn't pull them off half the time on a bad day. I doubt anyone could do a sequel or remake of this combat style I could enjoy Rogue Galaxy got annoying to me, when I found out you should just spam your best AOE attack. Then later, a fight that turned 1 vs 1 with the dogman I believe, I got brutalized in the blink of an eye. Put it down an never looked back. I think they would have to rebuild the combat design for me. I always wished we got a Xenogears anime rather than a game. I feel like rather than a sequel, we need the team that has proven in the right scenario, they can make great finished games, need to be given the chance to properly remake Xenogears "Thousand Arms might not be for everyone," yeah, especially SJWs, you'd never see it fly today unless it was nothing but anti cis hetero normative relationships
Really did enjoy Xenogears, did play the original and as download on PS3, such a good game. Although a very similar yet even more forgotten game that needed to be this list is MS: Saga A New Dawn for PS2. As that game not only introduced quite heavy mech customization in a JRPG, it actually had the Gundam license to use official mecha as well. Would so like either of these games to get a sequel, but the current modern gaming industry would very likely ruin them for very obvious reasons.
I haven't played a lot of games on this list. But I agree with the ones I have played. Legend of Dragoon 2 where they fix the issues would've been amazing. Xenogears needs a remake with the second disc the same as the first. Secret of evermore definitely had an amazing premise but you're right was not executed fantastically. Would've played a sequel though. Skies of Arcadia is super fun and I can't believe we haven't gotten another.. Who Even owns the rights?
It’s CRIMINAL that we don’t have a Lost Odyssey sequel. Hell I just wish they would re-release it again . One of the best JRPG stories out there and the true Final Fantasy 13! As a side note every time I hear even one note from a song on the Xenogears soundtrack I get immediate chills. Best soundtrack of all time and not even close for me.
I know it wasn't very popular, but a complete revamp of Evolution Wars would have been cool - Xenosaga deserved better imo, but i am horrible at JRPGS for some reason so those are the only two i can think of LOL great vid!
The legend of dragoon: i was there when it released and it got a big publicity campain announcing it as Sony´s Final Fantasy. They bet on visuals and FMV to sell the game but it didnt work. Lost odyssey: still waintig for it to be released from xbox. Good writting and music. All this talk of sequels makes me think: 1-the importance of reiteration: lighting in a bottel comes once in lifetime. the rest of the time we need to try, leran and improve and try again. 2- the gaming business become increasingly more risk averse and that is the reason many games and good ideas dont get a second chance. 3-that leads us to the importance of crowd funding as a tool for us to make things happen.
Xenogears was the ending episode to Xenosaga. It was originally episode 5 and says so in the credits. However Monolith Software and SquareEnix had a falling out leading to Namco being the new publisher to Xenosaga.
Rogue Galaxy was one of my favorite games. It really needed a focus on the story, though, and some continuity checkers. It's like they forgot Jupis's name pretty much after introducing him, and the skill tree for Jaster has a dual tech for him and Kisala that references their romance, which isn't explored AT ALL in the game. We need a director's cut to explore some content that I feel had to have been cut out. And the whole idea of the intergalactic war isn't touched on at all. Just "hey, my desert planet is basically enslaved by our galactic government because we can mine supplies they need to support our armies against another galaxy, and oops we made it to the capitol planet and our general wants to start peace talks so our government is good guys now." Definitely want a sequel with a whole new cast that takes place centuries later. Maybe bring back the robot, just to have the link to the first one.
I vaguely remember playing Thousand Arms and Xenogears back in the day and they didn't click for me. I was probably just too young, but they would be ripe for a remake at this point to bring fans in to those games.
I still remember being shocked at just how bad the localization of Wild Arms 2 was. Those segments where the lizard super villain would show up were just straight gibberish. I finished the game, but it was rough. I wonder if it ever got a fan patch?
It's a bit of a nitpick, but anyone saying Crystalis is one of the best NES games in general is totally full of it. It's cool, but.... One of the best overall? Not a chance.
There’s some alternate timeline out there where not only did Xenogears get a completed second disc but they then made the first four episodes and episode six. I’d also love for a Vagrant Story sequel, even if it’s a spiritual sequel. That world and gameplay is just too good to leave behind!
Aren’t Xenosaga and Xenoblade the successors of Xenogears though. I mean the protagonist of the Xenoblade 3 expansion was a blatant reference to Fei from Xenogears. I know they are different stories entirely. So I get wanting a sequel to that particular story.
I’m in the same boat, brother. Wondering what the other five Xenogears games could’ve and should’ve been keep me up at nights too. Shit I think about the real 6 episodes of Xenosaga. I would love to go to the reality in our multiverse where the six Xenogears games actually came out
This is probably an unpopular opinion: I wish "Beyond The Beyond" got a sequel. The game ended on kind of a cliffhanger that looked like it was going to be resolved in a sequel
Crystalis was an amazing game! We definitely need a new version of a game like that. You also gotta give credit to a game that came out in 1990 that predicted the end of the world in 1997.
legend of dragoon dont need sequel becoz it ended beautifully, what it need is prequel especially set in the dragon campaign era or Rose's personal crusade...
How would you successfully make a sequel to legend of dragoon without it butchering it? Most sequels end up butchering the original because people don't want to try something new, hence the "desire and need for sequels".
Legend of dragoon is one of the first games I can remember playing. Unfortunately, its hard for me as well to enjoy it as much as I did. For me, its almost entirely because of the translation. I went to school for japanese, and reading the dialouge in LoD honestly doesnt even feel like english to me because of how directly it was translated. A translation mod or something would go a long way in making it better imo
Rogue Galaxy and the crafting i was like lets do it, combine anything everything etc. make everything but after like i dont know the first 15 or 20 i gave up i mean i did get to the best gear that u can craft, or i think its the best, by just playing around combining and it worked every of my character that i played with had their weapon the best one and armor etc. i was ok with it and the end was easy enough and sure i agree with the towns etc to have monsters and encounters be a burden, tedious etc. just to get to that shop or whatever. I mean i did what u just said AOE clearing skills and moved on, it was just a pain to deal with especially in the later phases of the story and the game, u just wanted to enjoy the setting and story not just fighting randomly encountered goons and agree a sequel could iron out some of if not all of the annoyances
Great video as always. Noticed other comments saying this but before we get a sequel, Xenogears needs a proper release more attuned to the original vision first.
played all the games on this list and agree 100% secret of evermore resonated with me as a kid because i had a German shepherd so i thought the main character was me hahaha doubt that game will ever get a sequel but one can hope
I'll settle for a remaster of Lost Odyssey on Steam. A sequel would be nice, but I just want to replay it and with 360 emulation being what it is, it's going to take a while before that happens.

5:26 I mean, you could have saved that pun for a Drakengard video, but whatever
Since you didn't mention it in the video Lost Odyssey can be played via backwards compatibility on any Xbox back to the original VCR Xbone and is available to buy digitally and for pretty cheap too. I bought it at release and recently replayed it this way and it works great since it gets some additional graphical filtering and faster loading times.
Hell yeah, a Captain Harlock shoutout
Xenogears and Skies are good picks. I would like a good Soul Hackers 2.
That’s a good one too
In the same line of Rogue Galaxy, I wish that White Knight Chronicles had a chance to evolve, but this time written by someone who knows what they're doing, and a more player-friendly droprate....
I clicked because lost odyssey. I can't shut up about this game even now, but barely anyone knows it. It's almost as forgotten as Phantom Dust.
You could put Xenogears on every list you make and you would be justified for doing so lol
Props for giving some love to Crystalis and Secret of Evermore!
I'd love to see another Radiata Stories myself.
Awesome video! Man, I have so many PS1 JRPGs I need to catch up on!!!
I was always a big fan of Legend of Legaia on the PS1 a sequel would’ve been really cool to see!
It wasn’t a direct sequel but it did get a second entry on the PS2 actually! Wasn’t as big a fan of it as I was the first one though…
Panzeer Dragoon and Skies of Arcadia.
When you hit the mic! 😂
It's not a traditional JRPG, exactly, but Azure Dreams had a fairly robust for the time dating element, and also could've used a sequel.
Great work as always!
the intro is dope as hell dudes
I agree with many of these
I'll always appreciate a fellow mic-slapper
Skies of arcadiaaa!!!
Made me want to play FFIX 😂
Kinda like Outlaw Star, it was a great show but rewatching it, some of the flaws show a bit more.
Still good! Still recommended! Not quite as rabidly defended 😅
"Everybody was Kung fu Fighting to Starfox Music" - What I'm gathering about Xenogears' Battle System
I couldn't get anywhere in Legend of Dragoon, I'm bad at the timing, and couldn't use anything but the most basic combos, and even then I couldn't pull them off half the time on a bad day. I doubt anyone could do a sequel or remake of this combat style I could enjoy
Rogue Galaxy got annoying to me, when I found out you should just spam your best AOE attack. Then later, a fight that turned 1 vs 1 with the dogman I believe, I got brutalized in the blink of an eye. Put it down an never looked back. I think they would have to rebuild the combat design for me.
I always wished we got a Xenogears anime rather than a game. I feel like rather than a sequel, we need the team that has proven in the right scenario, they can make great finished games, need to be given the chance to properly remake Xenogears
"Thousand Arms might not be for everyone," yeah, especially SJWs, you'd never see it fly today unless it was nothing but anti cis hetero normative relationships
Awesome channel. You guys have similar taste to my brothers and I. Love the lo-fi transitions, really good shit!
RPGs shouldn't have a direct squeal. It should be a complete story. Now if your saying another story in the same universe, I can understand that.
All this talk of sequels makes me think:
1-the importance of reiteration: lighting in a bottel comes once in lifetime. the rest of the time we need to try, leran and improve and try again.
Just "hey, my desert planet is basically enslaved by our galactic government because we can mine supplies they need to support our armies against another galaxy, and oops we made it to the capitol planet and our general wants to start peace talks so our government is good guys now."
Definitely want a sequel with a whole new cast that takes place centuries later. Maybe bring back the robot, just to have the link to the first one.
I vaguely remember playing Thousand Arms and Xenogears back in the day and they didn't click for me. I was probably just too young, but they would be ripe for a remake at this point to bring fans in to those games.
Xenogears *sigh* I don't even know what to say...
I'm one of those people who ONLY likes Xenogears lol, the others aren't bad, but aren't for me.
Man, I would do terrible things for a Skies of Arcadia sequel or even remaster/remake. Also Rogue Galaxy.
I would love to go to the reality in our multiverse where the six Xenogears games actually came out
Vagrant story i would put in here too. A sequel to FF7 could be cool too. And FFT.
This channel needs way more subscribers, well done, quality content here, thank you. God bless. Jesus loves you!
More like 8 RPGs I’m glad never got sequels because their image never got tarnished by a lackluster sequel.
Compulsory dislike for that sheeeite you were talking about LoD's combat being slow.
new Gaming Broductions video. Stopped everything I was doing to watch.
It would be nice having a sequel to Radiant Historia, but it's kind of a perfect and long game as is. Love it though.
I hope Stella Glow gets a sequel one day. I would settle for a PC port but a sequel would be really nice too.
Great video as always.
Noticed other comments saying this but before we get a sequel, Xenogears needs a proper release more attuned to the original vision first.
Lil bruh, literally no one had a 360 to play crap like Lost Odyssey LMAO!!!
I LIKED FF13. I don't care what anyone says.
I would say that Legend of Dragoon deserves more a Prequel. There is far more plot material and i would love to see the Setup to the plot ❤
I somehow miss Last Remnant on the list, a game with great potentials, which could have evolved into something great, if it ever had a sequel.
seriously...WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO TO AT LEAST GET SKIES OF ARCADIA TO RE-RELEASE!? 🤣
Can you imagine a sequel or prequel to xenogears with the same complexity and deepness? It would be surreal
Good stuff. Quite a lot of games here that I’m still looking forward to playing.
played all the games on this list and agree 100% secret of evermore resonated with me as a kid because i had a German shepherd so i thought the main character was me hahaha doubt that game will ever get a sequel but one can hope
I'll settle for a remaster of Lost Odyssey on Steam. A sequel would be nice, but I just want to replay it and with 360 emulation being what it is, it's going to take a while before that happens.
True. I was lucky enough to know who made the game when it came out, so I bought day 1. I never sell or throw away my old consoles, so I still got it.
i think the battle system of xenogears would have been a better implement than the timing based battle system of legend of dragoon.
Awesome list!! Love most of these games, specially Xenogears (my fav of all time)
