Head Replacement / Face Swap and Motion Tracking Tutorial with Mocha in After Effects
In this updated tutorial you will learn how to use Boris FX Mocha Motion Tracker to repalce a head, in this case the head of Jean Claude van Damme from his famous Epic split Video he did for "Volvo Trucks" with another head that you have filemd in front of a green screen.
Learn all that is necessary in after effects.
Learn how to use the plug in Mocha from Boris FX, that comes with after effects to at first stabilize a shot and then motion track a shot to create a face swap / head replacement vfx effect.

Hi there, thanks for the tutorial. I'm pretty new to the VFX game and unfamiliar with Mocha, so I'm wondering out of curiosity, is it not possible to achieve the same thing using After Effects' built-in motion tracking? Cheers!
Hey, I ll try to give you a short answer here: After Effects is only tracking points. so one point if you only want to have the position of a subject, 2 points if you want to also have rotation and scaling. Mocha does more, it is not tracking a single point, but a surface that you define, therefore it is at first more precise and you also have the ability to get skew and perspective data out of the track! I have done a few mocha tracking tutorials on my channel and I am currently creating new updated ones, as the workflow gets better and therefore updated on a regular bases.

I'm asking because I don't know After Effects exactly: How is it different than After Effects? Face Tracking in After Effects is unfortunately very slow. Is that fast?
hey, it really depends. What do you mean by slow? Sometimes great results can take some time 😜

I just want to ask a question. My friend's ex recently blamed him that he recorded a video of their private moments. He is a very gentleman type person since I know him from childhood. he swears that it isn't him in the video because they never got physical but she is blaming him. Even I can't tell whether it's real Or fake. All he says she had 100-200 photos(selfies) of him in her phone even now from old days maybe some videos from the video calls.as a software engineer I know there are such advanced tech softwares. But there isn't a single thing that one can say it's fake. The video is not of good quality that too it is recorded from a distance. Is there a chance that she used some software to make such a p**n video??
its possible to make a deepfake, but then again, deepfakes require around 7,000 images of a persons face and usually they must all be high quality. so i doubt its that. and the human face is the most diffucult (some might say impossible) thing to fake. anyway. im sorry youre facing the issue, i know this reply is a month late, but i thought i might step in

I cant seem to figure out why the face doesnt stay in the correct spot after apply the tracking data. even tho i made it the same size.

Hey... 3 things: first I don't do paid work... been there done that... 2nd: I would be too expensive unfortunately. 3rd: this is a tutorial, so try it out on your own and save some money!!
Great! ...OK , so I need to apply makeup and beauty effects to some wedding clips 5-10 sec. each. what I do is very long process, first I extract frames in jpgs or tiffs , then I import them in lightroom do editing and then (even then it's limited) as face editing and clothes or body is completely not free ( brush masking can only be applied to individual frame) , there are few limitations and export them and then recompile them into videos and then apply luts. can we do this process quickly in AE? I mean process a face in video without making it a picture first. (blemishes, spot healing, skin softening etc)

I have one question, once I’ve done everything and apply the tracking data from the original footage to the replacement head, why is the replacement head changing position? So I adjust the head to sit perfectly on the other head, when I apply the data. The overlay head moves its position so it’s no longer in place with the other head. I appreciate any suggestions you could give.
The answer is: you need to precomp the head before applying the data!! And thanks for the nice comment!! You could also create a null object connect rhe tracking data to that and then reposition everything afterwards...

hello, just out of curiosity with a video not proposing the same movement of the head, face.. You can make sure that on the video or you want to replace the head even if the video is not in connection with the official, that the head replace + face follow the movements correctly or it only works on the facial expression?
Not 100% sure if I got you right, but is should totally be doable not only on the face. Do you have an example video? Because it will really depend on the footage!
Hey bro! I'm getting a green screen soon. 3x3 meters at least, for some full body things. I'm starting with this, so excuse my ignorance. Is it better to have a little darker kind of green, or the super bright green ones? I'm also getting enough lights to illuminate the foreground and the background indepedently :)
Hey, OK, so here is the thing with greenscreen and the exact color. You have to keep in mind that the settings in your camera define "how bright" or "how dark" the green is! not what you see with your eyes. take an average green-color and I promise you, you will be happy with it!

Haha... the problem is, that mocha is a free plugin, but mocha PRO is a plugin you have to purchase, but you will get super awesome features with it! But if you just want to follow along the face swap tutorial, you can use mocha ae! That should be pre-installed already!!

Hi! Thanks for the Feedback. But indeed if you look at the original reference the lights on him look a bit like studio (#fake??) so I wanted to improve that by keeping it diffuse. Next time I will shoot outdoors!! Thanks man!!
flomotion you do this in studio, no need to go outside. What makes it a bit fake is mainly your right side of your head (camera left). The sun is on that side and should also be in your lighting.
What could be the problem ? When I insert the greenscree face into the original, the center point does not appear at the same time, and thus I cannot fit them together.
looks like your footage and the insert do not have the same comp size! You may want to precomp both before starting the tracking!!

Hey Raffalo, that should work in the exact same way! Just make sure to have a realy solid greenscreen as hair can be very tricky... 😉

Haha... well then you can achieve the same shot, but you would have to roto! But still you could try a color key, or if the color is the same you could try a luma key. If none of that works, you will unfortunately have to roto it out. But with mocha, or the new roto brush version 2, that should go pretty quick!

Thanks!! so now to your question: if you add a car to your scene, there are three ways to do that.
1. filming on a tripod: you can then simply add a picture to the scene and color correct it... if you wish apply some handheld motion later on
2. film it with only nodal camera movement, then you can easily motion track your scene and add in the car in the same way
3. film it as you wish and go totally crazy... then you have to 3d track your scene and you also need to have a 3d car. You could use Element 3D as plugin or cinema4D as this links to After Effects.

What would be the best way to change the color of the arms? I tried to rotoscope them with mocha and lighten the color a bit, however , the edges were too hard and feathering it slightly made it look unnatural.
you could try lumetri colors, as you have a tool there to specifically separate the skin tone! and then use that as a mask, or make a solid in the color you want, add it on top, set the blending mode to "color" and drive the amount of the effect with the opacity of the layer. you can also use the lumetri color layer as an alpha matte for that! Does that make sense?

can i ask, i notice you only showing 10 seconds approx of work on timeline, but your end video is long, did you have to go back and do the same work there that you have not shown us because of rendering time and mocha takes a long time to track?
hey! I did the final version before recording the tutorial, so I know what I need to do when recording! and because it is the same for the first few seconds as it is for the last, I try to get as many info into my tutorials without getting boring... that's why😉👍

Hy! If you use Adobe Creative Cloud, which is the only way to use AE, then you always have the newest version! So I am using AE CC 2020 at the moment

@@flo.motion I think it took around 8 hr in my old pc the problem is the long video shot the deep fake app finds it difficult to align the image. I tried with ae before but for me was lazy to do roto (I did tracking and roto) so dropped the project.

Hey! That really depends on how fare you are turning the head! Either you would need to have a proper 3D Model or you could try to time your movement to the one you want to track.
