The lyrics to "Butter" actually reference two of pop's biggest icons: Michael Jackson and Usher.
🌟Quite literally the song opens with Jungkook singing, "Smooth like butter / Like a criminal undercover," a nod to Michael's 1988 hit, "Smooth Criminal.
🌟And by the time the second verse rolls around, V sings "Pull you in like no other / Don't need no Usher / To remind me you got it bad," which is inspired by Usher's 2001 hit "U Got It Bad." The song sees Usher helplessly falling in love with the girl he's had his eye on, but in BTS' case, this line flips the script and shows how their superstar status allowed them to capture a special person's affection. In "Butter," the BTS boys are basically saying they are just SO charming, SO charismatic, and SO smooth that it makes people fall in love them and wanna dance. 100 percent true, if you ask me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯💜

There were two Usher references in V’s verse: don’t need no Usher to remind me(Usher’s song You Remind Me and then Usher’s You Got It Bad reference.
I read some commented that they referenced 2 Usher songs. U Remind Me and U Got it Bad
There were other references to MJ - "...moon rock with me" - MJ's famous dance move The Moon Walk, and the song 'Rock With You'. The beat is very much like Queen's 'Another One Bites The Dust', which I hear Queen actually responded to :) I've heard lots of Bruno Mars comparisons, but the chorus is SO similar to the ending of Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' - the bit that goes "Let you put you hands on me in my skin tight jeans be your teenage dream tonight" (musically my favourite part of the song, and the lyrics also go really well with the theme here). The rap lyrics sound very American in tone to me, quite unlike BTS rap lyrics. This song is just a huge, layered tribute to American pop music.

Fun fact, the words heard as a crowd chant in the background are part of the fan chant for the song. Basically, for every BTS song performed live there is an official fan chant which is supposed to be sung/chanted by the crowd. The fan chant also includes all of their names in order of how old they are but starting with RM (Namjoon) because he’s the leader of the group. This works well with Korean names because they have a very specific structure and always have three syllables.

I am consistently surprised by how ON POINT your analysis always is. You always catch all the little references and hidden meanings, sometimes even without the cultural background one would usually need to do that! It's just freaking cool.
By the way, in the scene where they're being fimled for mugshots, aside from holding up plates with their names, each plate indicates the member's birthdate. So you have their names, birthdates and the first number is what i'm guessing is their debut number as in the contestant's number when they first registered for debut and that holds so much meaning behind it. It's like they're reminding themselves where they came from and comparing it to where they are now and it's like this hidden message to never stop dreaming and continue believing in yourself because dreams do come true and someday, you're going to have it big. But at the same time they're grateful and humble and it also acts as a reminder to never forget all the hardships they went through and the obstacles they had to overcome to be where they are right now. Every little detail holds so much meaning behind it and that never fails to amaze me

Hmm I see requests for permission to dance which is another cheery poppy song. I like it but there are so many other bts songs that are more hip hop with amazing lyrics that Knox would likely appreciate more. There are so many to choose from but Not Today or an earlier song would be cool!

I always love your reactions to BTS. You pick up on a lot of small details that others miss which makes it such a joy to watch. You’ve reacted to the rapline, Mic Drop, Idol and of course the intentionally lighthearted fun songs like Dynamite and Butter. Can’t wait to see which live performances you choose. So many GREAT ones to choose from. I really hope you get to see the live cypher medley from 2017, which was just lit (though it can only be found on Facebook and Dailymotion).

Yas!!! What I liked about this song was that it had more juice than Dynamite. It really seems like a casual frack you to the western music industry (they're fan favorites but their songs were never played on the radio), I mean they talk about being the best for the entire song. They be swaging. Maybe Im reading too much into it, tho.
Is it just me, or can anybody else not shake off the similarities between KnoxHill and Frank James (The one who does the personalities videos). They kinda look alike, and give off the same energy, even though they make totally different contents... I can't seem to unsee the identical-ness😲.

8:13 the lead can be a synthesized guitar but mostly in such retro pop songs an actual synthesizer is used like the roland jupiter or something. We also have their vst versions which are like emulators of those expensive synthesizers
