    Thank you SO much for posting this. We lost the key, and the locksmith told us $240 to make a new key. But he said if we can "pull the switch before he got here... He would knock $50 off the price.". Well... I called the auto store and the ignition switch was $46. So, we looked it up on you tube and saved over $200! Thank you AGAIN for posting this!!!

    He feeds you with information but withholds the most important thing - how to re-code the key. Which basically is rearranging what's already there to fit the original key.

    Thank you for this video. My 98 4runner has two keys,...one for the doors and one for the ignition. I purchase it a week ago and don't like using two different keys. Pulled out the ignition switch and will bring it to a Lock Smith to have it re-coded to the door key. Thanks for the help.

    after you drilled out the retainer , isn't that retainer gone now? I saw that you refilled the hole but that retainer had a purpose of holding the cylinder in place. Is that correct?? So what happens with the retainer that was drilled???

    why not just pick the toyota lock cylinder or drill straight into the hole the detent is in it's an easy job find the drill bit of proper size and then you can recode it or put the pins back in place for the lock.

      Parts used to "recode" lock cylinders, are sold to locksmiths, in various ways; some by kit, others can be purchased individual. You can also use parts from a similar lock.

    Good video, but it would have been more helpful if you would have shown how to actually remove the cylinder cap instead of skipping ahead. I have this very cylinder and cannot get the cap off to save my life

    • @r3woods
      @r3woods 5 лет назад

      I figured out a method for removing the cap.
      Step 1) There are two pins that exit the back side of the cap/bezel and are peened over onto the body of the cylinder. I drilled those out.
      Step 2) There is a tab that extends perpendicular to the plane of the cap, inside of which there is another pin, driven into a pocket on the cylinder body (which is between his three fingers at 7:32). It must have been driven in at the factory, because I was able to force the cap off after doing just step 1 and drive the pin out from the inside. It might be easier to just drill it out.
      If the cap doesn't come off easily at that point, try placing it in a vice so it is just catching the bottom edge of the cap, then, using a small dowel in the key opening, tap the cylinder away from the cap.
      Hope this helps.

    • @JesstheGeologist
      @JesstheGeologist 5 лет назад

      But then you would have different keys for the door (and trunk) and the ignition, right? I think this is why recoding the ignition lock to the existing key is desirable.

    • @thehomeofmemes
      @thehomeofmemes 5 лет назад

      @@JesstheGeologist You are correct, unless you want to re-code the door/trunk lock cylinders to match the ignition key....in which case you'd have a full matching set.
