  • In this video, Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) reviews the important distinctions between the four different types of flu, including classification systems, propensity to cause human epidemics and pandemics, mutation rates, use in vaccine, host range, the functions of hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, spillover into humans from other species, and more! This one is really jam packed. :)

    Any chance you could update/sort your microbiology playlist so one can just watch the playlist without skipping videos? I think most of the videos are in the right order, but some videos just don't seem to be in the right position.

    H & N Are different Antigens , right

    • @WhyNot-si4pj
      @WhyNot-si4pj 4 года назад +4

      Correct !
      Hemagglutinins (HA) are viral surface glycoproteins that got their name from the fact that influenza virus has the capacity to hemagglutinate fowl & chicken RBCs IN VITRO .
      Actually that is achieved through binding of (HA) to a surface carbohydrate residue on either fowl RBCs or human host cells called SIALIC ACID .
      That sialic acid has another chemical name called ( N- acetyl NEURAMINIC ACID) & new viral copies to be released from the cells after replication need to DETACH their hemagglutinins from the sialic acid residues bound to them in the budding vesicle membrane .
      So the other viral surface proteins neuraminidases (NA) come into action to catalyze the breakdown of the N- acetyl NEURAMINIC ACID (sialic acid) residues & set the new viral copies free to reinfect other cells . Hence the name NEURAMINIDASES !
