Miyako has given me a whole new respect for pianists.
This "Eagle Fly Free" piano cover from maestro Miyako is part of her debut piano EP "Étude Op.23" which was released earlier this year. It contains 6 piano covers of famous metal/rock songs (including "Eagle Fly Free"). According to Miyako, she wanted her debut piano EP to showcase that metal is just classical music with modern instrumentation. A point to note is that "Eagle Fly Free" is not even her most complex reimagined and interpreted piano piece in this EP. Back in 19 November this year, Miyako also performed a 2-part (day and evening) piano recital to a LIVE audience. She played the songs in her EP as well as others. BTW, the band's cover is from their Studio LIVE LP "Awake Again - Live from Abyss". They played all their tracks from Lovebites' first album "Awakening from Abyss" (plus the bonus "Eagle Fly Free" cover) during COVID lockdown.

I love this Helloween song. It gives each member a chance to solo. Miyako on the keys is unmatched.
this 3 guitars, 2 singers thing is very recent for Helloween (all former band members were gathered for the tour)
1988 when they released this song they had 2 (lead) guitars

This Live studio session DVD known as "Awake Again" was to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of their first album release "Awakening from Abyss"!
The DVD is them playing the first album in full, an amazing album, followed by this Helloween cover at the end!! And yes Miho totally owns this song!! 🤘
This studio setup was the Stream "Awake Again", that was produced for the 3rd anniversary (2020) of LOVEBITES' first full album "Awakening From Abyss" (2017) and streamed later on demand. It contained that full album in excellent quality with this "Eagle Fly Free" cover from Helloween at the end...
I would have suggested the same - band version followed by the piano. You're right they are so different. I love them both but especially the bass and drum solos. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Miyako also does this song on the piano on her Cd released earlier this year. She has 6 songs on it from bands/artists like Halloween, Metallica, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen, Gary Moore
, and LOVEBITES.
The piano used in Miyako's video session is a Yamaha C2 Grand Piano - the type plate is visible at 2'19 in the original. I doubt however that it was used for the audio recording, because
1) The C2 is a relatively short grand piano (5'8" - 173cm), often used as a practice instrument - it's sound is described by users as bright and a rather mellow bass section, and already by the first listen I'd had the feeling, especially the bass sound in the video does have much more "oomph" than I would expect from a short grand.
2) it's factory black and painted over (perfectly visible e.g. at 2'50) - who would do that to an otherwise perfectly recording ready grand piano?
3) Where are the mics?
So, it was a Baby Grand? Also, I don't KNOW where the mics are but typically they place them inside at various points near the soundboard. Thanks!

In all things that Miyako does, be it just walking, or talking, or playing music, or looking into our eyes, she is the epitome of a true 'Earth Mother'. Absolutely beautiful in all respects.

Haruna (Dr) started learning to play the drums at the age of 13.
She became obsessed with metal after seeing a heavy metal bant at a local live music club.
Haruna's favorite band is "Helloween".
The first drummer Haruna admired was Ulrich Kusch.
She plays a electric Roland at their concerts but has commented she likes the(Yamaha or Steinway, I think) acoustic more. Maybe she has a deal with Roland for the live performances?
I believe she played a Steinway for her recital back in November.
The ROLAND electronic piano was rented during LIVE IN TOKYO 2020, and Miyako was asked whether she preferred a black or white piano, and she chose white.
On the day of the concert, she touched that electronic piano for the first time and seemed to have a hard time getting used to the feel of the keys.
I think it was Roland because of the budget for the live performance.
When she first rented a Roland piano in 2020 and a grand piano in 2021, I watched Miyako's rehearsal video and remember the video where Miyako expressed her surprise at the difference in rental prices.
The space on the stage may also be a factor.
And Miyako also mentioned the difference in the feel of the keyboards she has played over the years, as the keys of acoustic pianos and digital pianos are made of different materials and the weight of the keys is also different.

They are amazing, thanks for your reaction every time you think they can't get better but no they are full of surprises. And I'm feeling with every new stuff which they produce is getting better and better. Every new album is better than the previous one. Their skill level is just mind blowing. I don't want to think about what is going to be with the next album. Anyway, if I have not mentioned before there is a live version of the song Soldier stands solitarily, you can react to it as well. Stay metal.

Excellent review as always RC. Yes, this is a recording from studio streaming live. The first cover assimilates to the original very much but this is heavier and harsher than the original, and I think the total sound is better with Lovebites. Although they went over the original very well, Miho's solo is a little different from the original. Miho did it with hammering on and off but the original is usual plucking but very quick. They both are just great.
I agree with you. They or we make communications a lot without speaking with gesture and eye contact when we play together closely on a small stage or in a studio like this. We see they do it time to time in this album.
Yes, acoustic grand pianos sound better than electric grand pianos. In the case of Lovebites, we love Swan Song version from Zepp Diver City Tokyo 2020 Five of a kind better, but I think the piano sounds better in the version from Tokyo Dome City Hall 2021 Heavy Metal Never Dies with deep gorgeous bass sound of the real grand piano. It sounds much better than that white Roland piano in the version 2020 and 2023. Doesn't Miyako look so gracious and noble with her dress and long hair in the acoustic version?
Yes, she does. I often reflect that she would feel right a home as a guest artist in any world class symphony.

Japanese sound engineers worked on this release. And the sound on it is perhaps better than on the rest of the Lovebites live albums. I think we should not overestimate the contribution of the Finnish studio to the production of Lovebites. We don't know all the reasons for choosing Finvox. I think Japanese audio production is the best in the world. And Japanese sound engineers are outstanding masters of their craft. And the video was created by the same director Naoki Takeyama, who shot all but two of their music videos and all of their live releases. And the video sequence in Awake Again is just great. Pay attention to the color balance, sustained in a soft range. The clothes are matched to the hair color. The picture as a whole is blurred, but in places the sharpness is such that the fabric structure is visible. The same lighting effects are used as in the music videos. It seems that the girls are glowing. In general, I must say, there are no trifles in everything that Lovebites produces, everything is thought out and done at the highest level. And this is another amazing thing that is associated with this group. But all this can be seen and appreciated only with good quality of both the source and the reproducing equipment. Reactors are forced to react to the YT version and usually do not even suspect how much what they see and hear differs from the original. And they have no idea how good the original is.
That whole concert they did in that studio is something every Lovebites fan should see in its entirety. It is so good, I will watch it many more times in the future. Miyako's piano performance is better than the original song, as is the Lovebites cover.

Last week I got the Helloween concert release - Live at Budokan 2023 with a huge number of viewers. There were three guitars and Eagle Fly Free. I hadn't heard this band before and honestly watched the first half hour. I didn't have enough for more. Then I put Knocking' at Heaven's Gate. After Helloween, listening to Lovebites is like listening to jazz rock. It surprises me that in Japan a band like Helloween gathers a full Budokan when they have such a miracle as Lovebites, which play in relatively small halls.
I love Haruna and she will always be my favorite in the band, but here we see who the true genius behind Lovebites is: Miyako, formerly known as Mi-Ya and sometimes accused of having no expressions on stage, but despite her presenting that poker face and rarely smiling feels and understands music more in a toenail than many pseudo-authors-composers I know, Miyako reveals her emotions not through facial expressions but through her music; That's why she's a genius, and that's why I, the music world and the entire pack adore her and thank her: Thank you Miyako 🤘🐺❤🐺🤘
The only triple-attack guitar band I love is April Wine, I never really liked helloween to me they were not authentic enough and tried too hard to sound like Judas Priest, so that to me made them a cheap imitation. This cover or rendition that Lovebites did is 100% better than the original, I can say that about their cover of Judas Priest Pain Killer. These ladies are masters at what they do and any cover they do and will do comes with ease to them with their own flavors they kill it every single time. No offence to the helloween fans but I never wasted any time or bought any of their albums same with many bands of the 80s imho there were only a handful of great bands and the rest was all garbage mainstream media.
I'd wish, LOVEBITES will once be able to create a song like "Keeper of the Seven Keys", I'm sure they can, EotW is close.
To the other point, if they'd choose to cover more classic songs, they'd probably be killing it. But they have lots of their own stuff.
Love the sound of Miho's bass in this.... it sounds farty ...in a good way.
