This song makes me think of my Uncle John. He was a Union man to his bones. He was a shop steward for his firm for many, many years and an absolutely amazing negotiator. He would often be called upon to assist his union at tribunal and on tricky cases, even long after he retired. He was wonderfully interesting to talk to, not only about union matters and the Labour movement in general but about the history of our local area and times gone by. He enjoyed the simple things in life - putting on his daily bet and watching the local football. He lived every day of his 91 years until he died in 2019 and I will forever miss him.
I was 11 when this song came out and I remember a colleague in the Navy back in 1979 used to be an abbatoir worker and he told me stories of how they used to strike at the drop of a hat if one of their workers so much as cut a finger.
Have a hard time hearing lyrics so just leaving these here for convenience: Now I'm a union man Amazed at what I am I say what I think, that the company stinks Yes I'm a union man When we meet in the local hall I'll be voting with them all With a hell of a shout, it's "Out brothers, out!" And the rise of the factory's fall Oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Til the day I die Til the day I die Us union men are wise To the lies of the company spies And I don't get fooled by the factory rules 'Cause I always read between the lines And I always get my way If I strike for higher pay When I show my card to the Scotland Yard And this is what I say Oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Til the day I die Til the day I die Before the union did appear My life was half as clear Now I've got the power to the working hour And every other day of the year So though I'm a working man I can ruin the government's plan And though I'm not too hard, the sight of my card makes me some kind of superman Oh, oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Til the day I die Til the day I die You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Til the day I die Til the day I die
Things will work out as long as we keep fighting. UAW is in a resurgence, the largest strike in human history nearly shut down India's economy, and membership to unions and leftist orgs has been on the rise for years. We just have to keep fighting.

Its overdubbed with the studio recording, but there are sufficient mics and the guitars are plugged to indicate this was a live performance...... wonder it the original audio is available somewhere....
@@welshlad6427 No that was Tony Blair, Cameron, BoJo and Rattus Rattus. Of course you have your own people running Wales these days and so are an amazing economic success.
This needs playing over the PA in every Amazon warehouse
Someone should play this on repeat to Kier Starmer!😂
CLASSIC!

We need more like your Uncle. From what you say he was a stalwart of freedom and fairness. I am so sorry for your loss.

Divide et impera. Caesar.
Wonderful. What a great band.
Great stuff. I've never heard, or even heard of, this song before, and I love the fact that it includes some re-worked lyrics from Union Maid.
This classic was in Margret thatchers classics records lol
This song is absolutely brilliant i love it someone should dedicate this to Arthur Scargill !
He overthrew the government in 1974, but met his match in 1984.
Brilliant

They almost always mimed on Top of the Pops, but still had microphones and speakers etc to try and fool you into thinking they were playing live
definitely not live, sounds exactly like the studio version on Bursting At The Seams
Came here from the Bee Gees documentary
Who’s here ‘cuz of Andy Capp?
Shout out to Mick Lynch

Unions in the 1970s nearly ruined Britain. Thankfully Maggie T got 'em with her handbag!
You've got that the wrong way round.
@@jonathannettleton2588 Okay Arthur Scargill swiped Maggie with his Gaddafi's money bag.
Then she finished the UK off

All out, typical 70s unions. Crap!
Was it though? People looking back on that era only have comedies really saying that but was it the reality?
