Astounded. I always imagined Marvin to speak with an American accent! His victory over Alan Minter (who I met in a pub once and was also astounded how small he looked) marred the image of British boxing re the bombardment of the ring. However, the Brits always respected him (not the idiots of that night) and regarded him as one of the best boxers ever.
Anyone who said Monzon was overrated knows nothing about boxing. He could throw hard punches every second of every round. All 15 in his case. Never seen it before or since.
The 2 draws HAGLER had he won. 2 out of the 3 loses he had he won by decision. A wide majority of other pro fighters coaches trainers of his and other peoples believe he lost only one fight to a decision EVER. He's never ever been knocked to the canvas in a pro fight not one single time I am aware of... people examined his head (doctors) saying he has a different kind of skull, like its a helmet on the inside of his head or something. BEST CHIN I have ever seen, best switch up stance ever, superb heavy jab, great body punch, good hooks and uppercuts. One of the best WORK ETHICS EVER. TO ME IN MY OPINION he won 66 of 67 fights (52 knockouts) a superb amount of creditable and professionals would agree and have. LEGEND PERIOD
He ducked below the waist (an illegal move) and was knocked off balance by a weak shot. Serves him right. Go off balance (of your own free will) and you could knocked over. Won the fight easy enough though.
Point takenBUT Herol was the number one contender and deserved his shot . For a period of time Herol was an excellent fighter. He sadly waited around too long for his shot and was denied. Marvin, of course was offered to fight Sugar Ray and so ignored Herol. Sugar Ray won and retired, leaving the belt vacant. Meanwhile Herol lost to the excellent Kalambay. Herol nearly pulled the win off against Jackson, but Jackson had scary power. I sat ringside and saw Julian against Mclellen...SCARY.
I’m a big hagler. And your wrong he didn’t win against Leonard. Hagler made one fatal flaw he agreed to Leonard’s demands making the fight a 12 round distance and not a 15 round distance. Hagler was a 15 round fighter. I think he was behind on the cards against Duran after 12 rounds. Hagler had no urgency in the final round. And he could’ve went another 3 rounds whereas Leonard was spent. Leonard stole the show during the fight and made Hagler look pedestrian
Marvelous Marvin the greatest middleweight of all time in my opinion and spot on about 15 round fights.I grew up watching 15 round fights and I've never agreed that 12 round fights are safer, look at the number of fatalities in boxing that come within the 12 round distance. Also I've never agreed with same day weigh ins,if there were check weighs in the weeks leading up to a fight then that could give an indication as to whether a fighter is making weight safely.
Hagler was one of the final throwback fighters from the golden age of boxing; he never had Robinson's skill (who did?), but it would have been an interesting matchup, as would Hagler vs Monson - Monson may have been too big and rangy for him; I know Hearns was big and rangy but Monson had better stamina, was tougher and could take a punch better than Hearns. I think Hagler's slow start and the fact he chose to box in the orthodox stance, for the early part of the fight, cost him the Leonard bout and his world titles. As good as Herol Graham was, I don't see him getting past Hagler, who, it has to be said, is one of the very best middleweights to ever grace a boxing ring (RIP Champ)
Watch the clip with Brent Musburger and Thomas Hearns....Hagler says that he plans to 'break every bone in his body' (referring to Tommy Hearns). The guy was vicious. But man...you are right BRUM...it seems he still has that killer instinct. Once a fighter always a fighter. I am glad they cut the tape, so they didn't show much more of that side of him. Hagler wasn't afraid of any of these guys. I often read on youtube that Hagler wouldn't fight Benn, Graham or McCallum...Please guys get serious!
For sure, Woody. He stops Benn and Graham easily, and beats McCallum, although McCallum had mad skills also plus an insane chin, so 116-112 decision. What do you think?
Herol Graham was very good, but, let's face it, Hagler was always going to fight Leonard or Hearns because he would made far more money against them than Graham.
@@johncohen9800 I agree, in boxing you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate. Herol was mid30s and zero losses, but Hagler wanted nothing to do with him. Herol was outstanding but ugly to watch at times and couldn't outsell a phone both. he did deserve his shot though. Money talks in boxing.........
Coolwater Jones He loves there’s after the Leonard fight in 1987, he hadnt been there for nearly 30 years at the time of this interview, so it was odd for him to be speaking like this. Also, his recent interviews he’s speaking in his normal American accent
I wish Herol had boxed Steve Collins, Tony Sibson as well as Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank and Micheal Watson, Those would have been great matches. I think Herol, would have beaten all of the aforementioned opponents. Anyone elses thoughts?
Marvin a legend....the fight that would never happen was him n leonard at there peak....leonard was to smart for that.. the pride and adulation of losing to marvin at his peak may have broken sugar ray....like when honeyghan beat up don currie
This man was the real fucking deal, relentless animal with a tireless engine, if your not in condition against this guy your gonna get fucked up, period!
What the hell was up with the weird Italian accent? I understand he has been living there for almost a decade at the time, but all of his recent interviews he speaks in his normal American accent??
What is never mentioned is Thomas Hearns broke his famous right-hand in the opening round. Hagler is talking a load of rubbish here. Hagler fought a load ob bums, tomato cans and journeymen. Duran a lightweight very nearly beat Hagler and Leonard a welterweight, having his first fight in 3yrs kicked Haglers butt.
Hagler was a great fighter, but he's always been crybaby who refuses to accept that he lost to Leonard. Marvin is only insulting himself when he keeps saying how exhausted Leonard was. So he let an exhausted guy (who came right out of retirement) beat him. That Italian accent is a laugh, he's from Newark. He hated whites yet moved to Italy and marries a white woman.
He liked smaller lighter guys and brawlers. Well HBO did anyway. Slicker fighters he generally avoided. He rarely thew his best punch because he needed to get his feet set - only thew it once in the Leonard fight, but best punch of the fight. If you look at what he weighed at fight time he was almost a light-heavy and he never did half of what Micheal Spinks did or looked half as good. Would have been well beaten.
Spinks fought 31 times. Hagler 67. Half of what he did? Hagler never got knocker out. Or knocked down. Hagler fought 50 times before getting a title shot. Dodged no one. Clown.
Hagler talks smack. Duran went on to win the title against Barkley. Style makes fights and although Hagler is great he has to accept that Hearns did much better against Duran than he did. Styles makes fights...
+Barry Walsh I agree Sugar Ray is so clever and stole that fight by out boxing haggler on points. He really did beating and that is coming from a boxer. I was a Haler, sugar Ray Leonard, Hearns and Duran fan so Liked all the fabulous four. Hagler Lost fair and square.
Ray played games with Hagler for 4 years or so! They should have fought in 85! Not 87! Also, Hagler speaks so different here, like he's not from the states! WTF??
Marvin Hagler's claim to fame is a victory over Thomas Hearns, with Hearns breaking his famous right-hand in the opening round. Other than that victory, Hagler has a razor-thin points win over the former lightweight champion Roberto Duran. Leonard easily defeated Hagler.
Its Funny now in 2018 that he's lost his Wanna be Italian Accent. Hagler is my all time favourite fighter i just love that guy. Buy Jeez whats with the Wanna be Italian accent. And he's a sour loser. They way he went on after the Leonard fight was some what off putting for me.
Apparently the historic context of their career long rivalry avoids you to. As well as the fact that Leonard privately admitted Hagler won the fight then refused to give him a rematch. Context! It's illuminating.
I am so proud of Marvin. Listen to his speech. Wow!!!!! One great fighter. These fighters are gone, never to be seen again!
Hagler, the greatest ever. He could handle anything, but just unbeatable. Fantastic to watch. A boxing legend.
Charlie Magi! Cripes, another of my hero's!

Marvins picking up an italian accent lol
He lives in Italy
Vito Antuofermo once jokingly said Hagler was more Italian than he was.....and Antuofermo was born in Italy
herol graham great fighter
italian english ! never heard him do this. The best
Just simply the greatest fighter ever in the middleweight division marvelous Marvin hagler
