- In this video mortician/embalmer Tracy talks about the more emotional side of her job - the body preps that have stayed with her through the years.
Although those in the industry have many ways to manage their emotional load and cope with the horrific and sad situations they are witness to, some encounters still break through that emotional barrier and remain with death care staff for years to come.
This episode is sad, but still uplifting as Tracy describes (among other things), the lengths she and her colleagues went to, to give a mother, her final goodbye.

My worst was about 12 years ago, long story short, a schoolboy aged 10 thought his bus was going to turn into the bus station so he ran across the road, but the bus didn’t turn, it just kept going and… well you know what happens when a head is ran over by a heavy vehicle, but what upset me the most was that he was still clutching his bus fare in his hand. I don’t know why that still bothers me, and apparently he was a little sweetheart too as all the school, and hundreds of villagers lined up on the roadside and clapped as he was driven past. My best is always when the family thank you for taking such good care of their dearly departed 😊 if it helps with their grieving process to know that we looked after the decedent as if he or she was our own family - because of course we do - then their thank yous always put a spring in my step for the rest of that day ❤
I'm a retired school bus driver and that is happening way too much.
We had a hand signal we used with the kids when they could cross.
That's driver is at fault because she should not have tried to leave till he was close to his front door.
Oh wow that's so very sad 😢 I can relate to that story my heart breaks for the family and the little boy.
I don't know about you but it always amazes me that we can cope with so much trauma we see in this job but I think you are totally right about knowing we can help the families through such traumatic experience. @@Areyoudyingtoknow I completely agree, I have had so many people ask me how can I what I do, and I don’t have any answer. It wasn’t something I ever imagined doing, But I’m so glad I did. I don’t think we ever really cope with the trauma, not properly I don’t think because if a violent death comes in we go into work mode, don’t you think? We don’t really have time to think so much about what’s happening, and I’ve spoken to one or two other people on this and they said that for the first year or so you would get into bed and stare at the ceiling remembering what happened at work that day, I know I did too. I find that talking about it helps a lot, not to everyone and anyone of course but offloading helps a bit. I wanted to start a channel a long time ago talking about my career, thinking it might be cathartic and then I came across your account, and it’s good to know there’s someone else in the world who’s happy to talk about uncomfortable topics when everyone else in the death industry won’t. Your channel rocks, you’re amazing. Sending huge hugs from Ireland 🥰🥰🥰
Hi, yes you're right, I do remember them earlier days of lying awake after a challenging day with trauma cases but you put it perfectly we go straight into work mode, thinking how do we fix it. I don't know about you but I wonder if one day I will wake up and say I just cannot do this anymore. Since starting this channel it has actually helped me a lot emotionally to tell our stories of what happened in the mortuary. Thank you for being you ❤️

@@Areyoudyingtoknow I think talking about it is the release valve sometimes, you have the right idea by putting it all in a video which I think is great, because you feed everyone’s curiosity and it always helps to talk about it, even if you can’t always go into detail on here I think what you’re doing is fantastic, and you’re changing the way people view death which is ground breaking if you ask me. People fear what they don’t understand and your videos help them understand and make them a little less afraid… and comforts a lot of recently bereaved people too. Its difficult to find the right person to offload to. My first husband hated me talking about work, hated me coming home smelling of disinfectant or even latex - which I don’t smell anymore, I think I’ve gotten used to it - but I think he was exaggerating half of the stuff he would say. He divorced me because apparently I was a ghoul for wanting to talk about my day 🤦🏻♀️ but I’m remarried now and my second husband is a fire officer so he’s seen death too, so it’s not a taboo subject to him. I reckon even if you do get to that point where you feel you can’t do it anymore and you finished work, it has a habit of pulling you back in I think… it’s a calling that few people can do. You’re tremendous, you really are 🥰 and if you are ever in Ireland we have to meet, definitely!! ❤️❤️ hugs back! 🥰❤️
How amazing that the father of the 2 kids held hope for his wife to see her children before they were buried, it must have been a daily heart-aching time
It was so very hard for the father, we were in constant contact 😔 I often wonder how mother and father are doing these days 🙏🏻 ❤️❤️
@@AreyoudyingtoknowHhaving lost children, I guarantee you they are permanently gutted and altered. They probably learned a means to go on, but are no longer themselves.

My mom didn’t want to be shown, except to her kids/grandkids. She passed away from cancer and she pretty much never looked at herself in a mirror after she lost her hair. The funeral people did SUCH a good job - she was absolutely beautiful 😢. We all said that if she could see how she was going to look, she would allow a viewing. But we respected her wishes and closed it after we finished. We were all stunned by how beautiful she was! At 85 years old and after having dealt with cancer for 10, that’s no small feat!

I wish we had more caring people like yourself in the funeral industry here in the United States. Although the funeral home I picked to care for my mom was wonderful, I really didn't get the personal care as I call it when I was making the decisions on what I wanted for mom. I only had the opportunity to deal with the lady in the office, and she was nice, but it was all business nothing that made me feel that there was any personal touches like you talk about that you do for families. So thank you for being personal and caring with the loved ones of those who have passed. I think you are wonderful.
Hi Heather, totally understand what you are saying a lot of the corporate funeral companies just don't do that individual personal touch. I like working for a small family business as we have the flexibility to change and suit every individual family, the big companies unfortunately have most things set in stone and generic 😔

Hey girls - wonderful to see you as always.
When my Grandma (the maternal side) died at 91, she’d been doing rough with cancer for 5 years. The local funeral home had been family owned and passed down for over a century. Hearing of her case, the 85 year old grandfather was summoned to prepare her body and his 84 year old wife then did her hair, makeup, and nails. Because their family knew that their oldest generation would relate best to the likes and preferences of a woman of her age.
The ravages of her disease completely vanished, as did wrinkles and sagging skin from the cancer. She looked a clear 20 years younger, and her physical posing in the casket made my mother remark that she looked “regal”.
The entire clan breathed such a huge sigh of relief with our last glimpse of her being that of when she truly was in her prime. It made the service and burial so much easier because so much internal weight had been removed for us.
You and all the others in your industry are simply angels. May you be blessed. Much love.

My husband was a train driver. He had 3 suicides, 2 within 3 months of each other and 2 accidents. He was a mess. One girl wanted to die and decided not to at the last second. The train hit her arm. Her arm was jelly. Bones completely annihilated. He said that was just as bad as the deaths. You are an amazing woman.

My daughter gave birth to a little boy a number of years ago, who died in her arms thirty minutes later. The funeral people were so lovely (in Brisbane). My daughter really struggled with the loss. She had two miscarriages soon after losing this little guy and the funeral home cremated them both as well, free of charge. They said it’s a service they offer to help with the grieving process. My daughter is still struggling, but it certainly did help her. It was a way of acknowledging that there was life … they had meaning
So very sorry to hear, this is so very sad 😢 I wonder if it was the funeral home I worked for at the time. Yes most funeral homes don't have a cost for families who have miscarriages. Oh, I got chills. You do an amazing thing, and you take such good care of your little charges. What a beautiful thing for Mom to be able to see her babies after losing them 3 months before. Like what a horrible thing to wake up to, but then to get to see them whole and peaceful. Ugh! Truly such an important thing you do.

I can’t imagine how hard your job is emotionally. Hope you get lots of support. On the light side,I’m scared when I die my mustache might be showing and my hair is done in a way that would be different to how I wear it,😅 have to leave some instructions of my wishes with my daughter…
My husband’s cousin died in a car accident he was only 22,he had very curly hair,whoever prepared him tried to straighten his hair and parted it in the middle,they had an open casket,I remember his mum standing over his coffin in church and trying to comb his hair to fix it how he wore it, I just broke down,thinking this poor mother was combing her sons hair for the last time,it left an impression on me 30 years later.💔💔💔

The mortuary and funeral industry was so absolutely tough to get into for women back in the day especially here in Australia but when we were able to the care and understanding towards deceased children and women that we bought to so many wives,sisters,siblings and babies from the hard edged formal and strict observances that were adhered to in the old days! We lent that heartfelt tenderness that was missing for the living relatives and the body of the deceased during the entombment processes especially for the open caskets for viewing which is nigh impossible sometimes considering some ways of death that the deceased might've had( arnt women the better makeup artists by default) U R ABSOLUTELY ANGEL/ NURSES/ CARER'S THAT WE ALL SIMPLY DO NOT GIVE HARDLY ENOUGH CREDIT AND PRAISE FOR SUCH A DIFFICULT, EMOTIONALLY CHALLENGING AND BRILLANT CALLING OF A CAREER!!!

Lifting people’s spirits in times of grief is a very special ability - and all just Tracy doing what she does naturally. Beautiful!
The topic of photographs of the deceased is worthy of a video discussion (or have I missed one?). Just like with viewings, people will have strong opinions on both sides of yes and no, but I’m glad I took photos of my parents after they had died, and again when I spent time with them after they had been prepared for their next journey. It still breaks my heart to look at the photos, but it also helps with the grief. ❤️

I have a funny funeral situation. I wanted to show support to an acquaintance who had lost their mom. The problem was I didn’t know the name of the deceased I only knew what funeral home. Turned out there were two services going on at the same time. I went to someone standing by the door of one service and asked if Claudia was there. They said yes and brought Claudia to me. Turned out they both had a daughter named Claudia. I had picked the wrong service. Luckily the first Claudia was very kind and found it funny that both services had a daughter named Claudia at the same funeral home at the same time. I ended up at the right service and my friend was glad I stopped in. It was just extremely awkward trying to get to the right area.

Speaking of hair...When my grandmother passed, she had had a perm but was not well enough to style it. While discussing Grandma's clothing and jewelry I said I wanted her hair styled for the open casket service. My mother said that "Sherry" would be doing the styling, to which I blurted out that she couldn't even fix her own hair so she wasn't doing Grandma's. There were uncomfortable looks all around. I had been talking about my sister Sherry, which was also the funeral director's name! At least one of us was relieved...😅

When my paternal grandmother passed away due to a third stroke, I learned about and appreciated this profession.
My grandmother was barely 60 lbs and 5’6”.
When we had the viewing, I just about fell over. In the beautiful casket, lay my grandmother whom I knew and loved. She looked like she died in her health!!!!!!
I never knew up until that point that it was possible!!!!!!
My Father passed away in 2021 due to aggressive cancer and could not have a service. He was cremated and placed in a matrimonial urn for when my Mother’s time had come.
That time came two months ago when my Mother passed away due to cancer and mostly, broken heart.
We had a beautiful service for both of them. So of course, no bodies and no viewing. The “viewing” was at the funeral home as well as the service.
However, on this beautiful wooden stand, was the urn with two candles, each with my mother and father’s pictures and a screen with a slideshow of photos and film clips through the years.
It was absolutely amazing. It felt like a celebration.
The headstone was not ready, as my parents chose to be interned within their headstone at the cemetery.
Yet, we were able to have a funeral procession down a long hallway adorned with beautiful floral arrangements. At the end of the hallway, was the door to the storage area where the urn was to be placed until their headstone was ready.
They opened the door and there was an empty shelf adorned with flowers and a closed adjacent door.
When talking to the staff later, I asked them about that and they said that they built the shelf for such ceremonies and that the adjacent door is the actual storage area.
So even though my parents’ bodies were cremated as per their wishes, we felt closure for them and the funeral home was absolutely amazing!
Oh wow that is so very special, what a beautiful funeral home to care so much.

Hello Trish and Tracy thanks for sharing your stories they sound very heart breaking. Two weeks ago I visited Great Yarmouth for a weekend and whilst I was visiting for a day I saw a gated off car park with a Private Ambulance leaving. I will assume there was a tragic accident or something but apparently these vehicles are seen quite often in Great Yarmouth. It is quite poor seaside town and it seems more likely to have serious accidents or deaths. Could this be the case?.

Low socioeconomic towns do tend to have higher and younger death rates unfortunately. I am so surprised about Great Yarmouth 🥹

Sadly like many seaside towns it is quite rundown. It is quite poor and there are a lot of issues with drugs and homeless. It can still be a fun place but I do hope money is put in to improve it fingers crossed it will be.

@Areyoudyingtoknow it is. I still love it and it has some beautiful areas like Wellington Pier with a impressive Bowling Alley and arcade but it needs work put into Great Yarmouth.

Thankfully no I have never dropped anyone. The head block I use to keep the head in place has many different sides to it so I can place the block on its highest level under the neck and lower head area giving me full access to the hair to cut and blow-dry. I have a question:
My Gran sadly passed away really thin & her face was drawn & you could see her cheek bones because she'd not been able to swallow food before she'd passed away, so she didn't look like herself. I'm glad that I didn't view her in that state looking back now. She didn't want to be embalmed or anything. My question is... If someone did want to see a relative who was like that, how would you make them look more like they were before they got so thin from not being able to eat? I know people would want to remember them how they looked in life when they were well.

I doubt very much that there would be much left to prepare unfortunately 😔
The remains would be wrapped and placed into a coffin or casket, not much else could be done. ❤️

Anyway life took a different direction, teen mum, and small town Mid coast NSW and told I would have to go to Melbourne to study. That wasn't an option, so it never happened. Hi, yes there are lots of funeral homes on the Gold coast, I would recommend sending in your resume and a cover letter of your interest to work in the funeral industry. The best way to get your foot in the door is by being open to any position, such as a FDA (funeral directors assistant), funeral director, transfers or office work. How would you take care of the grossly obese too large for a coffin or the crematory?
We would order a special made coffin so anyone of a larger size will fit. And care for them the same as anyone else ❤️
I think her emotions would be her kids are dead. Not how good they look.
It's about being able to put them back together so mum could see them without seeing the trauma of the injuries the poor children suffered 😔 of course mums devastated at the loss of her children, it's so traumatic for all the family 😥
