Mr. mixx is not mentioned enough! Those first 3 two live albumswe're insane. The arrangements and the scratching were so good. He was the key behind all of that
First off....thank you Big Steel for getting Mr. Mixx on the show and trying to tell some of his story ( with interruptions from MC EIHT). R.I.P to my friend Chris aka Fresh Kid Ice aka Chinaman and to Brother Marquis. I was stationed with Chris at Scott AFB in Illinois in 1983. When i first met Chris we hit it off from jump.Because i was from the Bronx born to Jamaican parents and he was from Trinidad but we were hip hop heads. He always used to wear his Tilden H.S ( Brooklyn)football jersey and a doo rag which confused everyone because only black dudes wore doo rags or stocking caps back then because waves was the hair style. We had formed a rap group called The Rock-On Crew. Chris was the DJ and me, Moe Wilson and Mark Rice were just hype men not really rappers but Chris always wanted to get out there do music. We used to go to local high schools or colleges and do little shows. Chris embodied the culture and really just wanted to do music. We used to go to Peaches Records in Fairview Heights , IL and Chris used to spend his entire check on records or equipment. And we got paid every 2 weeks. So he was ass out for 2 weeks sometimes. While at Scott AFB he lived in the medical dorm because he was in tech school to be a lab technician, but i guess he neglected his studies and ended up working in admin ( out patient records). When he left for March AFB lab tech was still his career path. But he came back to visit us before they became the 2 Live Crew and he had some tapes that Mr Mixx had done ( I STILL HAVE THEM). Mixx was cutting and doing some serious mixes. One thing i remember him doing with his mixes was incorporating excerpts from Rudy Ray Moore aka Dolemite in his mixes which was totally different. He also came to visit me when i was stationed at Dover AFB in Delaware. By this time 2 Live Crew was off and running and he gave me some T Shirts ( yellow with black letters) with 2Live Crew on the front and song titles on the back. Chris is one of the quietest and shyest ppl I've ever met so I was stunned when he became a rapper, because i know he always wanted to be a DJ and over the years his DJ skills got much better from hanging around Mixx. Im glad to have met and know Chris and I'm glad he got to do what he truly loved doing and ended up becoming an icon in this rap game. Will definitely go down as being the 1st Asian rapper and being down with an iconic group that took shots and blows for future artists in all levels of entertainment to do what they do today. Bless up to all.
Big shout-out to the original 2 live Crew rest in peace brother Marquis 🙏🏿 you will be terribly missed and thank you for your contributions to hip Hop💯
