serie is basically magic incarnate. she was the one that taught flamme and fern could become even stronger.

To be honest, Frieren squandered her potential by not giving a shit about any of it in the first place, which is why Serie went from "interested" when they first met to "disappointed" as soon as she open her mouth. Despite being the strongest test taker, Frieren doesn't have the qualities Serie respects in mages, aka what she sees as defining of a First Class Mage: potential, desire to grow your strength, talent, strong visualization, guts. Like, not only Frieren doesn't care at all about the certification, she also gave up on the test the minute she found out Serie would be the proctor; the defining trait of not caring and not fighting for things is something Serie can't stand. So yeah, I think it was perfectly right to fail her as she really doesn't have anything to do with Serie and the First Class Mages 🤷🏾‍♀️
Also, good job noticing how all the test takers we saw here stopped very far away from Serie! It's the first time I see reactors noticing. They all stopped at the limit of her mana, scared and/or in awe of the amount of mana. Remember this for next episode 😉

Yeah, Frieren herself admits that she's a disappointment to Serie because despite her age and centuries of training she still hasn't become the mage Serie wishes she was, so she won't pass her regardless of powerful she is in comparison to other test takers she will pass that do have the qualities she wants in First Class Mages. Frieren points out, more than once, that Serie's intuition is always right. So even Frieren understands that Serie failing her is "the right choice" in context and it's not personal despite how it may look. If it was really personal Serie woul've failed Fern simply for being Frieren's apprentice, all the more so after Fern shot her down when she asked her to be her own student.

Remember how they were struggling with the stubborn old lady because they've only got socially awkward members in the party? A Himmel or Heiter type of character would liven up Serie's magical association.

About Ubel, don’t forget she already bested two First Class Mages😅

Richter would have definitely passed, he was just unlucky, anybody else not name Frieren would have failed in that situation.
Serie failing Frieren wasn’t simply because it’s Frieren, she see’s Frieren as wasted potential and doesn’t like the fact that she isn’t ambitious. Frieren says it herself “I still haven’t become the mage that she wanted me to be “
Everyone’s always dissing the first class Mage that said he couldn’t see Frierens Mana😅, it’s funny because Frierens whole gimmick is that you aren’t meant to know it’s suppressed , which makes Lernen all the more impressive. Serie suggesting he could take on Frieren shows how insanely powerful he is, not to mention he’s the one that created the golems that Sense used in the previous test.
Ferns potential is frightening though, I can’t imagine how much stronger she could get.
Always enjoy your discussions for Frieren, it’ll be sad to see it end 😢

Plus, he's Ehre's grandfather. So when Ehre said that Fern fought like her grandfather it wasn't as much of a diss as most people assumed, since Grandpa Lernen is such a badass that Serie herself thinks he can take Frieren.

There's also the implication that Lernen had better mana detection than Aura, a Demon General of 500 years with a technique that requires her to know her opponent's mana.

18:45 The other issue for the second test would have been lack of intel. Not knowing the duplicates will converge at the bottom after ‘some time’ passed would be a danger to most of them, and Fern’s own duplicate was _extremely_ dangerous on her own (high-stealth spam-sniper), to the point that they had to specify Methode to deal with her, and showed nothing of their fight but the aftermath.
Lawinne seemed to have been the only one with that knowledge of the location/enemy, so there’s decent odds even less of them would have made it through than those that weren’t failed in this ep, without her.
Also, Serie considers suppressing mana to be a ‘useless’ skill, _specifically_ to anyone that isn’t the extreme minority that is elven mages. With the lifespan humans have, there simply isn’t enough time to refine that, _and_ be the best they can be at one other speciality.
Frieren was going to give up on taking the test with Fern when her holy sigil wasn’t recognized as equivalent to any particular class (so, Frieren really was just a really famous back alley doctor based on the number-class system) , then Lernen went “Bwah” and let her through.

I remember wondering who'd win between Frieren and Serie, that's one of those sweet summer child moments lmao, Serie has 10x the mana, plus she's spent most of her time learning stronger techniques rather than with the suppression of mana like Frieren , oh she already knows Frieren is suppressing, which is a major factor for how she fights

Frieren is incredibly impressive, especially compared to a typical human mage, but Serie has so much experience and power that she's practically a demigod. Heck, she's old enough that there's a possibility the Goddess herself could have been her master.

@@gilgameshlfx7006 I think they sorta explained it. Both her and Flamme got too used to war and couldn't imagine an era of peace, basically at some point they weren't too interested in taking out the demon king, not that it would have been easy either way, I think the demon king is easily the most powerful entity in the show

    • @Mizar007
      @Mizar007 3 месяца назад +1

@@gilgameshlfx7006 It's unlikely she ever tried. Serie is a warmonger, and can't envision a world without it. Even if she were to have killed the Demon King we wouldn't have the era of peace we have now, it's likely she would have just become a warlord. Her motivations aren't perfectly clear either, but I also think she kind of wanted the demon king around in a sense because so long as he was uniting demonkind she would have an unending war and an endless supply of powerful opponents for her and her students. In fact, we know that the Magic Authority was founded right around the time the Demon King was killed and to what end? To continue to produce powerful mages who are driven and enjoy battle...

The doubts about Frieren as a mage always reminds me of Loki from the MCU. In S1, he comes across a variant of himself who shut himself away from the world, becoming an incredibly accomplished magician. He scolds Loki about wasting his energy on silly tricks when he has so much potential. As Serie points out, elves will live a thousand years putting things off, resulting in a mage like Frieren making rookie mistakes and crushing masters. 😂
