I think the reason Himmel likes to poke fun at Frieren about "how handsome" he is, is so that she literally will never forget his face. The statues aside, I mean. And she has a firm stance on this, too. His face, his voice, *_EVERYTHING_* about Himmel, she remembers. It's so beautiful.

Frieren didn't correct him because correcting people with dementia isn't really helpful. In some cases this can cause confusion, distress or even anger
Yeah, when they're still mostly there it's just too stressful and terrifying to realize that their mind is going and they got confused, and that's the only thing correcting them accomplishes. My great-aunt had Alzheimer's and we quickly learned it was best to humor her and play along when it was harmless, just like Frieren did with Old Man Voll.
Yes. I was going to post the same. My grandmother, rest her soul, got upset and depressed upon realizing that her mind was fading and that she must be forgetting memories that were precious to her. We made sure to be careful with our wording when we remind or reintroduce people and events to her. We made sure to reassure her that she's not losing her mind.
I doubt they knew much about dementia in the Middle Ages. Most likely Friren didn't bother to correct him because regardless of whether the Demon King was dead or not, the peaceful era in the dwarf's village never came, he was still protecting it from monsters.
@@Hocotun Of course they "knew" of dementia, they likely just didn't have a name for it. That old people lost memories and cognitive skills would have been known and how to interact with people like that. Maybe you're right of the reason she didn't tell him, but you're not right to dismiss it could have been she realized it would be futile and potentially harmful once she realized his mental state.

I think that moment (the closeup of Himmel's eyes while the old dwarf was talking about the promise to his long dead wife) was when he realized he couldn't risk doing something similar with Frieren

You generally don't confront someone that has dementia like that. You simply allow them to live in that moment that they're in. Telling them differently can really upset them and put them in a rough way.
I started crying when when Old Man Voll started talking about how he can’t remember her voice or face. I never had a show impact me this much and having you watch and pick your thoughts out is so entertaining. Great Video!

Well it’s not the same as a human living 100 years longer. With the Dwarven life expectancy of 300 living to be 400 would be like a human living to be 100 vs the average of 75, not a common occurrence but not unexpected either. Now the fact he’s still a capable warrior when he’s the equivalent of a centenarian in human comparison is very impressive. Of course dwarves in fantasy and mythology are typically made of tougher stuff.
This episode hits hard for anyone who knows someone with dementia.

Another notable thing that happens in this episode is Frieren declaring unambiguously that her memories of Himmel and the others are important to her. Even just a few episodes ago, when asked if she was glad to have the ring back that she had been searching for through many sleepless nights in the forest, her answer was "maybe". But here, these memories are important to her. Not kind of important, not maybe important, just important, no ifs, ands, or buts. It's one of the first times we've ever seen her so being unequivocal about her feelings.
Memory is a big thing for Frieren. If you go back to Episodes 1 and 2, Frieren doesn't cry because her friends had passed away, she cried over the lost opportunities to make more memories. In Himmel's case, it was due to Frieren's own failure to make the most of the time she had with him, and in Heiter's case, Frieren cried when Heiter suggested that she and Fern should leave before he passed away, instead of sticking around to make more memories with him.
The title Beyond Journey's End is actually a triple whammy.
Beyond the end of their journey as in Frieren living her life and pursuing her goals after the quest for the death of the demon lord is finished.
Beyond Journey's End because her new goal, Aureole, lies beyond Ende, the place where the demon lord used to dwell. Ende is German for End, and she aims to journey beyond.
Also: Journey's End is an euphemism in Japanese for ending someone. You're ending their journey. Frieren is known as Frieren the Slayer because she ended the journey of many a demon, continuing on where their stories ended and, hopefully, finding a life beyond the slaughter of demons.
This episode always hits me in the feels. There's just something precious about an old warrior standing guard over a place that was dear to his wife long after he lost his memories of her face or voice.
This episode is *SO HARD* for me to watch. I already have memory issues thanks to some stuff there's no reason to go into right now, and the kind of cognitive decline we see here in Old Man Voll is my biggest fear in life. 😢

People keepa forgetting that Fern had the magic picture of her parents when she was about to jump off the cliff and stooped by Heiter, so ye we hve seen magic pictures before

9:58 I believe that's the case.. I feel like his promise is the only thing that still keeps him going, so if he found out that it's not necessary to protect the village anymore, a.k.a losing his only purpose left at this point, he might just go

While it's not stated how long, going to both could potentially add years to their journey that both sides really may not be able to afford. Tur is northeast according to the map shown, but Auberst is west putting them in very opposite directions, and going to Tur first would mean significant backtracking, so it's the far more inefficient of the two choices. If they were to go to both it'd be wildly inconvenient to go to Tur first, and they'd basically have to set out for Auberst. Meanwhile, Sein doesn't know if his friend is even alive or not, and while it was easier to just live with that knowledge before he set out on his journey, now that he has taken action he likely has a sense of urgency to find him. It's just the right balance of conflicting options to make it a very difficult choice.
Anyway, Kraft. Super interested to learn more about that guy. We know he was a hero of his time, and we know that time was so long ago that even Frieren doesn't know of his deeds. He gave some small insight in to it when we met him, stating he believes in the Goddess because he needs someone to remember the things he's done, and to praise him for it someday. I wonder if we'll ever get any more, though, as the very nature of not knowing plays in to the one of the themes of the show which is what we lose to time.

This is almost certainly not the case...
That is not the case. The hero of the South was a modern day hero and a human, meaning that he was not alive when Kraft became a world renowned hero. Kraft was the equivalent of Himmel in his time and he is so ancient that Frieren herself doesn't know him. That means that his deeds and legend would have to be ancient when Frieren was still a child.
I would hazard a guess that Kraft is at least 2000 or even 3000 years old. The only person that would know him now would be Serie. The fact that the statues are stone and not bronze or even marble supports this also.
