I'd love to put more colour pencils to the test! Are there any brands out there you'd like to see?

Giotto Stilnovo, they are very affordable in my country, I mostly used them for sketching since they are super soft, and for a school pencil they are pretty good, but I'm curious how they would perform with your style of coloring!

Have you done Schpirrer farben yet? I have ploychromos, tons of derwents, prisma.... all kinds of stuff and I CANNOT stop using my Schpirrer Farbens. I absolutely love them. I enjoy using them so so much.

Hi Gemma. First off, you're an amazing teacher and artist. Not only are your skills evident, you also have the ability to make yourself relatable to your audience (that's not an easy thing to do).
Regarding other brands to review, could you possibly take a loot at the 120 set of Art n Fly Oil Colour Pencils? I have done a lot of looking and viewing and so far they seem pretty solid but i trust your opinion. They are not open stock BUT it could be an affordable way for a new colour pencil artist (like me) to give them a try and as a pencil runs out you can replace it with a closely matching PolyChromos, thereby allowing you to build an artist grade collection over time.
Anyway, just a thought. If you could review them that would be awesome. i'm sure they'd send you a set purely for your efforts...

Great review, thank you! I’ve been eyeing this set; I picked up the lockdown hobby of colouring and whilst I’ve been embarrassed at the number of Amazon purchases I’ve made, it’s been good fun and has kept me sane during my sleepless nights as a new mother! Been using the Prismacolor, Polychromos, Arteza and Schpirrer Farben pencils but finding it hard not to pick up this set too, especially given the price. Love your channel, and excited to watch it grow. Subbed!

It sounds like you've well and truly caught the pencil collecting bug 😂 Do you have a favourite or do you find that each range is good for a specific task?

I'm the same as you😱 I've purchased so many coloured pencils. Amazon is smiling. I love adult colouring though. Just purchased these 😀

I have this set. I think they are just ok. I think the cores could have been thicker. The color selection is nice. I would not buy them again. I really prefer Prismacolor as they seem to have the most unique neutral line of hues, no company can compare to the Prismacolor tans, beiges, and greys. Great vid.

    Hi Gemma,
I think the cheaper colored pencils are great, if you can find some that lay down smooth. I like them for trying out different techniques and to see what kind of results I can get doing same subject with different techniques.
They're great for artists who are starting out with colored pencils. Cuts cost way down instead of using the expensive pencils. Also people who just enjoy doing colored pencil pieces for their own enjoyment.
You can get nice pieces with the the cheaper pencils.
Biggest thing is that IF your selling pieces, that's where you need/want the expensive ones. It's all about color lightfast. You wont be happy if pieces are fading in few years.
Anyway, great tutorials, and keep doing these lower priced pencils. Great way to decide if they are something to try out.
    🙂

I completely agree, that's exactly what I think pencils like this should be for. You do absolutely get a better pencil with the likes of Polychromos and Luminance but so many people just don't need an artist's grade pencil for what they want to draw. As you said, as long as they're not commissions/sale pieces then sets like Brutfuner do the job really well.

    Thanks for your thoughtful review...
I've never used any lightfast color pencils before, all my previous drawings are done either using the basic Steadler or Faber Castell. The drawings are kept in a folder, away from the sun and sticky fingers....and the colors remain the same after almost ten years.
The Brutfuner seems to be much higher quality than the basic pencils, so I think whoever owns one will get years of enjoyment out of them.

I have mostly Chinese pencils, because of the price difference. Who can resist a bargain? I like the following pencils, Marco Renoir, Nyoni (is also Markart), Brutfuner square (and the black barrels), and the new Phoenixcolor. I tend to prefer the softer cores. Deli is also a good pencil but I prefer the others. Any of these would be good to test. And the new Phoenixcolor are just beautiful.

I have them and love them. If you use the Buhl133 they sharpen beautifully. The odor subsides after a few days.

These are my favorite budget set of pencils. The dahle 133 will eliminate the issue with the cores also.

I’d love to see your take on the WH Smith Colouring Pencils (pink lid on cardboard box, with image of close up pencil points). I really like using them, they are hard and keep a point, I’d love to see you put them to test alongside others 🙂 Thank you for another helpful video, I recommend you whenever I hear someone ask for guidance with Polychromos.

Still curious about the squares, but first I have to swatch the 72 round set I received today 😉
And I actually don't need another set, already have FC Polychromos 120, FC Black Edition 50, Derwent Coloursoft 72, Brutfuner Macaron 50 and Spectrum Noir Colorista 48 😊

Maybe I used the wrong paper but I was dissapointed by these pencils. For the price they are ok, not more. From my budget pencils I prefer Arteza or Castle Arts.
I use my regular Dahle 133 to sharpen and the result is way better as with my staedler sharpener as you used. So maybe it's the sharpener and not the pencil. By the way that's why I love my Dahle 133 because I can use it for a wider range of pencil shapes.

I have a sharpener similar to the Dahle, which does pencil barrels to 11mm, works fine with the squares. I tried the big hole on the hand held jobs, and had the same issue as Gemma

Just discovered you (and subscribed!). Love this video, even though as of today it's two years old. If you're monitoring the comments, I have a question. When I clicked the link to go to Amazon (I'm in the U.S.) I was shown a 180 piece round barrel set, not exactly the same as the 120 square you tested. Is it safe to assume the core is the same, but they've solved the sharpening issue with the round barrel? The price is certainly attractive. I have a starter set of Polychromos (12) which is nice but restrictive. Since I'm fairly new, I can't really justify the 120 FC that I really want. Before I pull the trigger on the Brutfuner, I wanted to get your take. Love your videos, very well done. Thank you!

I have just watched this again, and note that you have difficulty keeping a point. Using that dual hole sharpener, I'm not surprised. A sharpener that is capable of holding a 12mm pencil will make a better point. And ANY pencil in the dual hole sharpener will wear down fast.

I got 2 of the same colour in my set. 🤔 I found they dwindle down fast once sharpened too. But they are nice enough. Prismacolour better in my opinion. 🤗

    • @GemmaChambersArt
      @GemmaChambersArt  3 года назад +4

100% Prismacolor are better pencils (and you'd certainly hope so at 5x the price 😂) I think these are great for someone testing the water or having a cheaper set to explore new techniques.
I had heard some stories about duplicate/missing pencils - my set arrived complete so I'm not sure if you were unlucky or if it was a quality control issue that has since been resolved.

Спасибо за обзор) я так понимаю главный их недостаток в том ,что нельзя подобрать точилку и низкая светостойкость?

Exactly right (and they do crumble a little bit). As long as you can find a large sharpener and you're not looking to display or sell the artwork then I think they're a great value pencil

Enjoyed your above review on the Brutfuner square. You gave honest and straightforward opinions on the pencils which is what I am looking for. Thank you. Btw, I have a set of Brutfuner 180 (black edition). Wondering if the quality is the same as the squares.

    • @andrewmandywilsontatham49

I have both. I like both, and yes they are slightly different. I think the squares have a very slight edge over the black barrels, they have a huge range of greens and some interesting colours like the fish belly (off-white)
