The first time I heard Fake Monk, like Richard I also forgot to breathe. The rawness of his emotions hit me so hard that I could not watch it again for a long time and it's only in the last year or so that I have gone back to listening to it. There are many singers who take us on a journey through their music but rarely do we come across one who courageously challenges rules, conventions and stereotypes in music the way Hua Hua does. I thank the RUclips algorithm gods every day for popping his videos into my feed 4 years ago😆
He is just a genius.... I haven't seen one performance where he wasn't brilliant.... so talented and unafraid to just be his special but humble self... So glad you guys have discovered him... he's worth it.
Hua Chenyu is unbelievable. Thought I heard him for the first time. But realized I experienced his great performance of Nunchucks on your channel before. Now I was imagining all your listeners were holding their breath just like me and definitely just like you two. I was blown away completely. Thank you for this! I didn’t know anything about his early life. It made me so sad.
Hua is the best actor of the singers. We martians love him❤.
There are a lot of great artists out there and I don't want to take anything away from them but Hua, is top of my tier list. The greatest stage performer of all time, dancers in another category. The one thing about this performance that I have never heard anyone address before is the hand covering the face, a perfect expression of the, "I want to be seen by everyone but known by no one."
I think I heard someone mentioned it before but I can't recall who is it, probably the same reviewer talk about the 2 colours on each side of Hua's face have meaning.

OMG - when I heard him playing it remembers me on my own childhood and much later. There were times I played my soul out of my body on my piano. Unable to express my helplessness by words - I could not sing but I could play like crazy - the same accords and tones like him. With that I also could relieve my pain.
It’s shocking but also interesting how similar the way of playing is.

I love the comment about the simplicity, I think it's harder to hide when you have something so stripped back and minimalist, just his voice, piano and a bit of reverb to paint a fascinating sonic landscape. I love how this piece feels starkly beautiful but also uncomfortable and edgy, I have watched this performance countless times and am always stunned by it. I really enjoyed your reaction and watching you guys immersed in the performance, I really hope you look further into his own compositions, his self-penned work is amazing and to me defies genres.

Hua Chenyu's 2024 concert will be held in Yantai, China. There will be two performances on May 1st and 2nd, during both daytime and nighttime, allowing audiences to experience different atmospheres. On May 4th, there will be a sunrise session, giving spectators the chance to witness the dawn of a new day together, feeling the moment when the first rays of sunlight appear. It's quite unusual to have a concert start in the early morning! I'm looking forward to it！！！！！！

The ability to completely be transparent and bare one's soul within a structured creative space while simultaneously playing an instrument competently requires a confidence and fearlessness one doesn't see too often. He clearly plays from a deep place but with a skill and artistry to be respected.
Some bands ....like grunge rockers or metal bands just come off as adult temper tantrums without real skill or creative structure.
I am a devout Dear....but I adore Hua and respect him tremendously. He's had issues and still stuggles...but he's found a way to channel it and keep it together well enough to forge a fantastic lasting career.
He just so versatile..

Many of the songs you'll likely be asked to react to are re-arrangements of other artists' work, and while they're excellent and they do showcase his arranging abilities (which are formidable!), I think that I and many others would prefer that you focus on his own compositions until you've been able to experience more of his compositional, musical, vocal, and performative range. There have been a few requests for HCY's version of a song called "Dad, I'm Home." It's another rearrangement of another artist's work, and although I absolutely agree that it's an emotionally powerful and gripping performance, I (and many others) would prefer that you keep that one for much later to avoid getting the wrong impression about the type of music that he does. Personally, I would recommend almost all of his performances on Singer 2020 and any of his live concert performances from the last year, as well as the 2019 Production Camp performance of "New World". I do have to caveat that last one, since the only available version on YT is the one posted on the TenCent channel, and they have been rather aggressive in the past about copyright strikes for that video. You could probably do that one on your Patreon, though. 🙂

HuaHua is really an amazing artist, know for his alternative approach for both his own songs AND the adaptions he makes. He reimagines things... In a way so beautiful and innovative. It's both a completely new song and a beautiful homage to the original.
Hcy is a very talented, very sincere and very unique artiste,so unique and outstanding that some people are so full of jealousy and started to attack him for monetary reasons. Sad, a talented and humble artiste like hm should be cherished and broadcasted.

Enjoyed your reaction and surprised that you chose this performance as your 2nd reaction to Hua Chen Yu. It was after watching this performance that I joined the Martians in bestowing “Hua Hua” to Hua Chen Yu. Mandarin is similar to Spanish in that both languages use diminutive forms of a word or name for terms of endearment. In Spanish ‘ito” or “ita” is added at the end of the word to turn it into a diminutive form, i.e. Juan in an endearing form would be Juanito. Mandarin repeats the word or add “er” to turn it into diminutive, i.e. Ling in an endearing form would be Ling Ling or Ling’er. Hua Chen Yu’s fans call him “Hua Hua” because he has a special place in their hearts. They chose “Hua Hua” because his surname is a homonym with the word for flower in Mandarin. Picture all the wonderful associations with “flower”.
I hope you will do a reaction Wednesday for Hua in the nearest future. His repertoire is very varied too.

Thank you so much for your very interesting reaction I loved watching you react just the way I do whenever I watch Fake Monk and your comments were so on point. I can't tell you how many times I've watched Fake Monk since 2018, but I'm still captivated/hypnotized every single time, like finally remembering to breathe at the end. It is such a unique performance in every way! But I remember that up until 2020/2021, many times Fake Monk wasn't so well received by reactors, and lots of them would stop reacting to HuaHua after Fake Monk, they just found it too disturbing and weird. Of course, it is disturbing, it's HuaHua's goal to disturb us and he won't consider not doing it this way for even a second. I'm really hoping for a reaction to Hua Chenyu 7 Personalities at New Year's Gala, this is how you can find the video, I'm so sorry I can't give links as they'll disappear right away. This was The Singer 2018 where British singer Jessie J was invited to compete with established, professional Chinese singers - she was only the second foreigner, apart from Dimash (Singer 2017) to ever appear on the show. Jessie won (she was great) with Hua placing second. A great show. 🙏🏻🇦🇺
Many people are unaware that foreign artists were invited long before 2017. There have been Malaysians and also Koreans.

It would be really interesting if you could react to Codename Contra and Contra in the Wild. Codename Contra is one of Hua-hua’s compositions/re-arrangements from . In that show, he had been challenged to come up with his own compositions in 24 hours (like from motifs from a computer game and opening music - no lyrics - in an old tv series) and created, in my opinion, a couple of Mandopop classics. Contra in the Wild is Codename Contra, rearranged in a totally different vibe. Would love to get your take on these two songs.

Hua Hua is so interesting. When I am not listening to Dimash or you 2 fun guys, I listen to this artist. I think it took a lot of courage to play this song in a competition as it is a raw expression of his childhood. All of his performances are powerful. Enjoy!!!

If you're reacting to "Sevenfold Personality," I recommend reacting to his Mars concert versions from the past two years, such as the 2021 concert in Haikou, or the ones in the Bird's Nest or Changsha in 2023. Undoubtedly, the 2020 New Year's version was also fantastic, but in recent years, Huahua's singing skills have improved a lot, and the sound quality and live atmosphere of the concerts have been even better. Moreover, I hate to see that on RUclips, Huahua seemingly only exists from 2016 to 2020, or basically only in "Singer" and "The Next," when there are clearly more and better live performances in these recent years' concerts.

For me, the concert versions are the best, especially considering how much his singing skills have improved in recent years. There were several fantastic performances in his concerts in 2021 and 2023, which were better than the one on New Year's.

This was from Singer 2018, the year after Dimash's second place in Singer 2017. It was won by one of our own, Jessie J. For another outstanding and unique performance in this competition check out Tengri and his own song "Heaven."
Dimash made a guest appearance at the show and would go on to perform with Tengri with "Swan Goose" another great peformance.

I've flown from California to New York to attend a Dimash concert. He has a beautiful voice but I don't feel compelled to attend another Dimash concert. On the contrary, I flew from California to China three times last year to attend Hua Chenyu's concerts, and I can't get enough. I've booked my flight and hotels to attend Hua Hua's concert in Yantai next month even though I wasn't able to get tickets. I will happily listen from the outside if that's the only way to hear it. ❤
And the following season Zhou Shen was on with Hua Hua with Hua Hua ❤ Winning 🥇 Zhou Shen did amazing too.

Hua, KZ Tandingan & Jessie J was in the same season of The Singer 2018. Hopefully you can check out all of his performances in The Singer 2018 & 2019. Also his "Dad i'm Home" performance in The Next & "IDIOT" on another singing show.
Hua can play multiple instruments & even his voice sometimes sounds an instrument too.
The Singers only required 2 original songs from each contestants & the rest was re-arranged by them & their mentor.
Hua was left by his mother when he was kid & he was left alone at home while his father was busy on his job so writing music is one of Hua's outlet of loneliness & lack of love & attention. He even kept a toy gun under his pillow at night.
He performed a "Lyricless" song as his audition piece in his first singing contest appearance that's why a lot of people doesn't like him at first because of his style. They think he's weird.
He even wrote a song about CANCER which it's just all vocalization of a cancer cells progression. Ordinary listeners find it weird & non-sense but it's artistic for those musical inclined.

Every comment about this performance is so on point. With Hua, he is so good at sliding into a note you don't except and seamlessly so smooth. "Illusion and Reality" (audio version) is another example of that. I love that he experiments with his vocals using it as an instrument which he does. Would love you to check out "Child" which is more an angelic style and with a surprise at the end. Subscribed for more Hua Hua.

I think those of us who have been on Hua Hua's journey with him, to his current place of happiness, have watched his battle for Peace.
The fact he used Singer 2018, week by week, to tell us his story, starting with "Qi Tian" (why was I born to live differently), right through all his failings, and those of others, to his "I am what I am" 😭 (love this performance) in the Final, endeared him even more to us. We wanted to protect him from all the things that had made him so unhappy.
His "Conversations with Martians" just sealed that two-way "relationship". (Such a clever idea to co-write a song with some fans, release it in time for the Concert Tour, and then gave us the truly wonderful "conversation" of him singing his part of the song, and thousands of fans singing THEIR side of the Conversation.
Its now lovely to see him in a happy place
I am a Dimash Dear and was glued to Singer 2018. It is indeed great to know Hua Hua is in a happy place now. You can hear it in his music. I hope he has a close relationship to his daughter. My mother heart ached so much for him as I digged down the Hua Hua rabbit hole after Singer 2018 and went back to se the beginning from 2013 and all of his participations in talent shows that I could watch here on YT parallell to my journey with Dimash. Hua Hua is an amazing composer, visual artist, talented teacher and maybe on the autism spectrum. Definitely brilliant.

His vulnerability and humility is what built his fandom of Martians. We all want to protect him and have done so for years. He is unique but truly a special being. His music and artristry is his own story that will only keep on impressing you. The only thing I laugh about with Hua Hua is that is has not grown any taller since the first time I saw him in 2013. The Hua Chenyu English subs channel has plenty to react to 😃
I have never recovered from this performance. His hurt was palpable, and I didn't need the English subs to understand that.
That was back in 2018 and it's still with me.
