A lot of people want to be extras, but I wish you had opportunities for crew. Because that's what I trained in ...everything behind the camera, not in front. Costuming, writing, production assisting, editing, hair and makeup, script supervision, etc.

Perhaps sitting on a mat? They had to have had many people with disabilities in the 40 years they wandered. I’m sure many extras, myself included, would be willing to help you when the crew is busy. Just a thought
