- From the 1977 PBS Special called "Fiddlers Three". It featured three great fiddlers (violinists) with different styles. Jean Luc Ponty (fusion jazz), Itzhak Perlman (classical), and Doug Kershaw (cajun). At the end, they all joined in for one final song. Just recently unearthed this baby from a pile of stuff and will upload all the songs in time.

They were all so good, but Doug Kershaw was so amazing with his can't stop dancing to the music animated performance! 🎶
The most remarkable thing about this performance to me as a fiddle player of 20 years is how at the end when Doug kicks off into Devils' Dream, Ihtzak Perlman just goes AFTER it. Ponty just sort of hangs back and does his thing, but Ihtzak, the odd man out, the classical genius, engages with the rhythm section goes right for the throat, hammering away. It's just fantastic.
I was blown away
Ponty is confident enough with his playing To know when to make a stand and when not to.Total Pro
We know what he's capable of.lol
I was fortunate in being in the audience for this magical evening. And I was thrilled to find this on RUclips. Thanks for posting it!
Didn't think anyone could be in the same league as Perlman, but Kershaw is just AWESOME!!!
Classical, jazz and Cajun jam session - genius!
Wow, three great ones fantastic
Wow, thank you for this! Certainly deserves more than 526 likes!
I have been trying to get a recording of this for years. I had the entire performance audiotaped but left the tape in my car after it was totaled in an accident in 2000. I never recovered the tape and thought I would never hear this again. What a revelation. Long live RUclips!
My pleasure.
It is fun watching Doug dancing with his fiddle.
Thank you Paul. You bring great joy to so many people. This was a great show of many great music people. Bravo from Texas!
It was my pleasure. I am glad folks enjoy these videos.
THANKS! I saw this back in '77 while laid up in the hospital... never saw it again...never forgot it. Great stuff!
It goes to show, music is just music after all. All these performers, great in their own right bringing such joy.
Three musical geniuses
Doug Kershaw is such a showman! And a great one!❤
Yes, I understand it's a tough one to find. Just glad I still had the VHS tape. I'll be uploading the rest of the songs soon.
Thank you so much for posting this. I saw this on PBS when it first aired and was mesmerized by all three of them. It just goes to show that great musicians can play anything when playing with great talent.
Kershaw,Perlman , and Ponty. Who would have though such a collaboration could occur.
All three of those “fiddlers” are an amazing talent in their own right, and equally amazing together! Wow!
Love how dougs whole body feels the music!
Both 3 so different artists. Rare.... Interesting... From France.
I was fortunate in that I was present for this and several other Soundstage performances thanks to a dear friend, Charles ( formerly C.D,) Jack. Great times, memories, friends.I know I posted this once before, but it was truly special.
I saw this (in black & white) on TV back then. Fun to find it again.
Thank you, thank you - I have been looking for this for years
Sweet show; sweet memories--thanks for posting it Paul.
Boy does that bring back memories
I love this so much!!! Brilliant, each in their own unique way. PBS get off your duffs and put this show on DVD!!
Should have went ahead and brought Mark O'Connor, Larry Franklin and Sid Page up to make this the ultimate strings jam.
Don't know how I missed this but thanks so much for sharing- great stuff!!
Wow wow wow bang! This is just amazing!
Wow Paul thanks for those videos. Absolutely amazing. I still have his first album that I bought. I loved him !

i remember watching the original broadcast....I would love to get it on dvd
Fantastic.
Thank you Paul Parker!
WOW!!!
Un-be-frickin-lievable! Jewish Perlman on the classic, French jean-luc on the jazz, Dougie on the Cadien(Cajun)......what else can the fiddle do?! Fantastic!
This is commonly called
"SAWING ONE OFF".What a Pride of Lions To Draw To.
Priceless!!!! Tytyty
Very few can hold a candle to Perlman!
hiefitz blows him away
True, but no one can hold a candle to that Cajun.
Nice finale back in 1977.
Real music , way beyond my ability .
Thank you so much for posting the videos from this special. I just today told the receptionist at my physical therapist about this PBS special (she was two in 1977!). I am thrilled to see this again!
This was '76. I'm playing steel in the vid.
How exciting! I wish I had the entire concert. Don't know if it's still available. Thank you for replying.
Bob Parker mentioned he had a VHS tape of the show. I emailed Soundstage and they said they didn't have a copy.
I'll ask KVIE, our Sacramento PBS station, what they know there. Can I find you here if I find anything out? I'm on Facebook.
It seems Bob has uploaded the show one song at a time. Orange Blossom, he didn't give me a solo. He was mad at me for wearing a cowboy hat to the taping.
I was there!
Doug Kershaw is hinged in the middle!
Sounds like ended with ,Doug and others joining in on the reel 'Devils Dream '.😂

Can the PBS Special Fiddlers Three be purchased anywhere on DVD?
Two stiffs and Doug!
Jean Luc Ponty is the one in the blue shirt on the right.
this is fantastic! But I'm going nuts trying to remember the name of the last tune - anyone have it?
Devil's Dream
Indeed it is!! Many thanks!
Must be more like this?
Listening to Cocaine and Rhinestones episode cocaineandrhinestones.com/rusty-doug-kershaw-cajun-way about Doug Kershaw dredged up this memory for me, thanks for posting it! I was 13 when this show aired and kind of knew what to expect from Perlman and Ponty, Kershaw blew in like a hurricane.
My pleasure.
early jamgrass :)
In French :deux maîtres du violon, l'un pour le classique l' autre pour le jazz, et Doug, plein de fougue et de bonne volonté, mais dont le niveau est bien sûr loin, très loin d'eux... From France.
Anyone know the name if the piece?
Devil's Dream
I'm l
why did ponty have that awful guitar playing with him?
Marc O'Connor would have been much more appropriate as the third fiddler than this nutjob Kershaw, but maybe he wasn't well know in 1977. as it is, this is two great fiddlers and a wig and sideburns. i remember watching this; Kershaw broke all the hair on about 5-6 bows during his number.
Where were you on stage?
By the way that was no wig, fyi.
Mark O'Conner was in the same class as my son's babysitter at Mountlake Terrace High School, north of Seattle, so he would have been 18 in 1976, and probably still a senior. Kershaw was (is?) a wild man, and fun to watch, even if moody (thanks, Bobby).
He was cool, we played a lot of golf together.
Kershaw, or O'Connor? And we do see you in the Battle of New Orleans segment.
