    Tile layout is one of the most important things to get right when tiling a shower. If you don't put some thought into it and plan out the best possible tile layout for your tile installation, be it a wall floor or whatever the tile surface may be, you could end up with tile slivers or undesirable cuts. Never just start in a corner and just start tiling, always take measurements, and dry lay some tile to use as a reference when planning your layout. In this video I try to explain how i planned the layout of these tub area to avoid small sliver cuts in the corner and where the field met the bullnose at the edge of the tub area shower. I also explain How I figured out what the tile cuts would be at the ceiling and the tub. I explain how to make and use a story pole to facilitate the layout of this subway tile tub surround. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. Great video as always! How long does it take you to tile a basic 3x5 shower? I’ve done a few and take a lot of time to make sure I do it right, but curious how long it would normally take a full time pro!

    A large part of layout is about looking for aesthetic perfection and sometimes settling for just about perfect. The rest is all about practicality of construction practices and creating perfection through great planning.

    My brain hurts, I’m trying to do the layout for my shower walls but I can’t fully comprehend how to do this. 😂 my tiles are 11.8 x 23.6 inches. My shower isn’t even that big, which may be why I’m struggle bussing this whole build.

    Appreciate the advice Sal, but you've got to work on your video skills. Too jerky, too close up. Perhaps a longer shot (from a greater distance) and definitely stop the herky-jerky motion. Gives me vertigo! But I did learn a thing or two.

    Please guys, write a reasonable time frame for doing such work as in this video. My boss makes me do everything as it seems to me unnecessarily quickly, and I do not understand whether this is my problem.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  5 лет назад +4

      Bosses will always complain about how long it is taking to get it done. My guess your boss i just worried about the bottom line more than the quality of the work. Maybe time to find a new boss or have a talk with him. Learn as much as you can, attend as much training as possible, get informed about proper standards and methods, get experience, be patient, then become your own boss.

    Thanks Sal, I too would hope to see more of this subject. I have 12x12 marble tiles for shower wall tiles. Can one use a running bond or is straight stacked the only way to go? (small 36x42inch shower)

    • @SalDiBlasi

    Great video Sal. Which do you think is more esthetically pleasing, a cut tile at the tub and a full tile at the ceiling or the opposite - a full tile at the tub and a cut tile at the ceiling?

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  5 лет назад

      Not really that cut and dry, pun intended, you have to take into consideration balance, other elements in the tub area, the size of the cuts at the ceiling and tub, the size of the tile and more. But generally I think the cut at the tub is more important than the ceiling.

    if you start your tile dead center and the niche is dead center will you always have a full tile around the niche? Also if you start right in the center wont your cuts pretty much be all the same for both sides?

    • @95thousandroses
      @95thousandroses 5 лет назад

      Not sure exactly what you mean on first question but yes I think so. On the second ?, yes you will be equal but you may end up with small equal slivers of tile on each end and you want to avoid that. That was what the main point of his vid was, to avoid the small pieces of tile that never looks very good.

    • @katzfam1089
      @katzfam1089 5 лет назад

      @@95thousandroses I mean starting in the middle so you have half cut tiles on an offset pattern instead of slivers.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  5 лет назад +2

      It is a tool to help with layout, use it if it helps, don't if you think it is a waste of time. This is an age old method, I did not invent it.

    • @anthonycarl3824
      @anthonycarl3824 5 лет назад +1

      KEVIN M. Sal said the tub wasn't level, the story pole is a tape measure. You line it up from the top of the first coarse... he cut that level, or filled in later!

      Old dog, you could just went with the sliver and saved your brain and our ears a bunch of confusion. Just do it, don't talk. I have same communication breakdown. Write it down brother, then proofread it. Outstanding work. All them bands and skim coats, to substitute a 20 buck roll of plastic over the studs.
