I was born in 1955 in Wichita Ks. Darrell had a shop for a short time north of town and had a few cars in the front window of his shop. My dad took us kids out there to gawk at some them displayed. Man did that excursion set my imagination on fire. I didn’t see the car that captured my attention the most, it was a three wheeler with a bubble top and joystick steering. The man had quite the drive and imagination when it came to customs. Every year he hosts a car show here in Wichita. Can’t say exactly how many years is been going, but it’s got to be nearly 40 years. Definitely going make a motorcycle day trip to his museum soon.
I used to go with my brothers to the National Hot Rod and Customs show at the New York City Coleseum every year. And for several years the first car you saw when you emerged from the escalator was either the Predictor or the Forcaster.....WOW No, more than wow...Darril Starbird (What an amazing name!!!) Literally, well, the word reprogrammed hadn't been invented but, those two cars blew and forever changed the circuitry from the neck up of THOUSANDS of young Americans who were uddenly and forcefully jerked into the future, liked it there and left a part of their minds..and hearts there. Guess how many engineers, scientists and auto service industry personnel...and kustomizers were made in those one moments. was one of those kids and I know. Thank You Darryl.
@@MyClassicCarTV Did you ask him if any of his bubble cars can really be driven ??? Many show cars are not practical, but when you lack any real ventilation they are even worse. I've seen a few over the years, and how driving them a short distance results in dripping sweat of anyone who tried to drive it farther than from the trailer in the parking lot into the show... [ by the way the Bell UH-1 Iroquois had to have the rear doors removed for use in Vietnam in the summer, so they didn't cook everyone inside...]
Barris, Winfield, the Alexander Brothers, Big Daddy Roth, Darryl Starbird; heroes of my youth. I still have an unbuilt Monogram 1955 Chevy "Customized by Darryl Starbird." I'll never build it; I'll just keep it the way it is. What a fantastic collection!!!
I was lucky enough back in the mid 70's to have the guy that had painted some of Starbird's cars to paint my 1973 Monte Carlo. That was one of the best paint jobs I had ever seen at the time, expensive but worth every penny to me!
The genuine artistry of these cars is still underrated (i.m.o.). Modern designers could still learn stuff from theses cars. Maybe not practical but fun and original.
My jaw literally dropped at some of these creations. I loved bubble top customs as a kid. So cool to see such an amazing collection. The interiors are just as amazing as the exteriors. Daryl Starbird to me, blows George Barris away as far as talent. His work had a much nicer finish to it. Barris’s stuff was great from 10 feet away.
Darryl was out mowing the grounds when I was there. Electric bicycles are my hobby, and I was inspired by my visit to imagine a wide range of trike designs. This place won't be around forever, get there and experience it now.
The man is amazing These cars are awesome as. WOW. To think they are sheet metal and NOT fibreglass is true craftsmanship. Well done Darryl. You Rock. And we have the same name. Your cars blow me away .You are a true legend man.
I can't believe it took me 3 months to find this gem of a show. As always Darryl is incredible the only thing that could be a treat would be to see Donna.
Absolutely amazing how gifted and talented this Man is. And blown away by the amount of work he's completed over the last probably 45 to 50 years of his life. I was born in 68 and remember many of these cars from Hot Wheels, but I never realized that they were an actual car first 🤯 Thank you for allowing us to look into this amazing world of one-off custom made from all steele cars. They really could be from any era if one did not know about the whole bubble top thing from the 60's. Truly amazing even from the RUclips perspective. sEven if you didn't care for custom cars, the amount of work and attention to detail each car received would be highly appreciated.
Basically it is exactly what America is my friend! if you have the money that is...a bunch of shiny things for admiration. It's a good and a bad thing depending on the person.
Yeah, but now the communist infected americans want to transform the USA in a place like the one you grew in, taxing, regulating, banning cars, so that they can live their dream of cruising in their UN-CO2 approved Gaz-14 limousine while the plebs are on bikes and on 10 years list for a 12 hp Trabant.
Wow ! I love your channel but screw the montage part on this episode... you need to film them all even if you put it out ad a 2 or 3 part series..this man has put his whole life creating these awesome vehicles..he deserves his place in the sun for sure! Remember, I have liked your channel from the beginning and you have brought so many great vehicles to all of us but this episode touched me enough to comment for the first time..thank you for all your hard work as well!
I agree completely. Some day he won't be around to interview and we will wish a series had been done about his accomplishments. This YT channel would benefit greatly from having a whole series with him.
Bubbletops look spiff and all, but you gotta have triple-power airconditioning to use them. They concentrate the sunlight something fierce and the interior turns into an oven.
So cool to hear the builder himself go thru the weird and wonderful cars. Would be cool if you got to try the one that didn't have a steering wheel on the road.
Beautiful Cars of the future, Would be great to see these beauties on the street. I agree the motoring future is going to be more rebuilds from the past based on great platforms. There are so many great platforms produced over the decades. Who needs another mass car to buy new? When you can have the car you want for the same price as new mass car. The irony is, the "mass car" has provided us with the platforms to create our Dreams cars of the future. Imagine what you could put on a TESLA platform? The mind boggles !
Back in the spring of 03 I went to go do a little fishing. That was until I ran into the Darryl Starbird museum. After viewing the museum the front desk lady told me darryl is out back. And that's where i seen him working on the Cristina Mark IX. It was missing the front clip and i could see the big ford engine. He was hammering on the right rear wheelhouse. He was all dirty lol sitting on his butt when I introduced myself.
Bubble Bubble toil and trouble. The Sheldrake Seven. The Commander Balock. The trippiest alien to ever pilot a starship. Please gentleman,, sit. I know, a thousand questions, but first the Tronra 🥃.
Sorry but the 56 Thunderbird was and is a heck of a lot more beautiful. I do give him props for the amount of hours he has put into these very creative cars. The perfect car in my humble opinion will always be the 1969 429Boss. But you probably knew that #mustangmedic 🏆
Dennis, This has to be one of your better shows, besides the previous one with Jay Leno and the vintage race cars, or would that be antique Classic race cars? lol. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it.
Wow. Such an amazing collection and man that guy is talented. Would love to see a full tour of this place. That Vantasta sort of looked like what I would think was the recreation vehicle in the old tv show Space 1999. Anyway, cheers and greetings from Australia and subscribed.
In the late 60s and very early 70s there were GREAT CAR SHOWS with cars that were One Off and remind me of the stuff here I would love to buy the Blue Glass Car (Star Ship) if you ever sell it
I wanna drive that yellow kei truck with the blown V8 sitting behind the cab. Looks like a fun little murder machine, put your foot to the floor and it will try its hardest to kill you lol.
What a legacy! Man’s hands were created to NOT be idle and Darryl’s work is a testament to that. I’m inspired. - Pappy
