Financial support from the government will be critical to grow a domestic hydrogen industry in Hong Kong, according to Citybus General Manager for Engineering Kenny So. So said he believes hydrogen buses can be a one-to-one replacement for diesel vehicles when covering the same work volume. Currently, more than two battery-operated electric buses are needed to do the same amount of work. So spoke with the Post on June 13, 2024, during an interview from inside the city’s first and only hydrogen-powered double-decker bus. The public transport firm now relies on one refuelling station in West Kowloon to operate the vehicle, which went into service on February 25, 2024.

Unfortunately, this piece doesn’t deal with the real issue: the NET production of pollutants, including CO2, including from how the hydrogen is produced. Buying from Linde, who does its electrolysis by burning fossil fuels I believe, is hardly the answer, unless it is very, very temporary. None of that was addressed.
Why don't they just use EV buses as the solution for this decade at least? WTF is wrong with this company? Just making some showcases instead of making real changes?
Problem with EVs: purchase price is very high, recurring maintenance cost low, major maintenance cost (replace batter after 7-10 years) very high.

@@Green-ov9ye I'm not opposed to Hydrogen buses, and if this technology proves to be a more enviromently friendly option I'm all for it as well! But it's just not practical enough in HK at the moment as there are no infrastructure and laws that will enable practical use. However, EV bus and charging facilities is already widely available or easily adaptable. Why this company refuses to use EV is IMO purely a economic decision (KMB already deploys various routes with EV buses). Pretending to do something vs actually doing something.
