As a gun guy.... I loved the realistic guns in this movie. At the time there were 3 studios all doing westerns. The movie gun prop houses were out of guns. Cimarron is a company that produces high quality shootable replicas of old west guns. The movie uses those guns. Many movies since have used the Cimarron guns.
There were definitely some hokey parts of this movie, and i also recognize that they killed pretty much a thousand dudes in that final battle lol, oh and then the way that somehow a Gatling gun was able to mow down people on the far side of town and seemingly cut through buildings like it was a fifty cal or some shit, with those quibbles aside - this film still had two of if not maybe THE 2 greatest western shootouts in film history! Yes the second was over the top, but they were still both fuckin phenomenal. And also in a way, more realistic that the one from the first where the towns people didn't even pitch in until the very end of the battle and the baddies were looking like they were gonna lose. I also liked how Hawke's character came back and actually kicked ass. In the original one, the "coward" dude left and then showed up during the battle like Hawke did - but he was shot immediately upon riding into town and didn't kill a single dude. A much more satisfying end for the character, especially it wasn't simply more satisfying, it was simply a badass ass way he and the knife man died at the church roof. As a whole, it's easily one of the best westerns ever made - i don't get why so many people hated it. The original was great too, but i still enjoyed this one more. The only other westerns that were as good or better than this was "Tombstone," "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," the remake of "310 to Yuma," "Silverado," "The Wild Bunch," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," and "The Outlaw Josey Wales." Alot of people would put "The Unforgiven," which was certainly good, but highly overrated imo.
@Jesse Haffner you have great taste in westerns, your list is impressive dude, these are ace movies. "Tombstone" I love and nice to see "Assassination of Jesse James....." appreciated, so often underrated. It's stunning. I'd just add the Coen Bros' version of "True Grit" for me a wonderful picture, truer to the source material.
@@rcogburn12 Wow, you know, i never knew that that film or the one from 69 were based on a book first. The one from 2010 has always been one of my favorite "re-makes", with "3:10 to Yuma" being the only better one imo, but it turns out - it really wasn't a remake at all. Similar to how many who weren't aware thought that 2021's "Dune" was a remake of the 80's adaptation, when it wasn't - it was just an adaptation of the same source material.
I searched many compilations to find the short scene where Vasquez vents his anger on the henchman that shot Faraday, love the way he just marches towards the guy until he shoots him into a coffin.

Well, that western wins having the highest kill count in a single scene. I don't think even Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" has as many. I must say, those bad cowboys were fanatical. I would think halfway through, after seeing their buddies shot and blown up by the score, they would say to themselves "I ain't paid enough for this!" and skedaddle into the sunset.
