I always thought it was a good way for less familar makeup users to get started into makeup. (Or skilled makeup users who want to see their own beautiful faces but with a little "enhancements"😅
A comment I saw on a RUclips video of a woman with a small nose contouring it Since when has not having a nose become fashionable I absolutely love seeing drag queens intentionally over contour their nose to the point that it looks sharp like a knife. I know exactly what they're riffing off
That's a fact! As a certified beautician in Switzerland I see this ALL THE TIME! what annoys me the most are people with already small noses cutting basically their small noses even more so and it looks just funny lol it's just a trend that somehow survived all these years
I much prefer a kiss of bronzer on my nose for everyday makeup. And very minimal contouring when I do. I don’t think people are taking their own nose shape and size into account when they contour. They just recreate the same two lines and a circle they see everyone else do.

Robert, this 64 year old woman loves your honesty. Excellent points about how make up appears on camera versus in real life. Thank you for all you do. ❤👍
I’m 34, and I also agree. I in general feel like that it’s nearly an editorial makeup being brought out as smth nearly natural. For my posts on IG I definitely do it different than I would, if I’d go out. At this point I also don’t really like to see, when people does those kind of editorial makeups, but then skips editing the photos part, which is, imho, quite an essential part of the process to show off the work properly. I’ve spoken to people who are wondering “why these or that people’s works looks outstanding”, and I’m, like: “Editing those works matters. And lighting also matters. Also you should remember that it all never looks the same in natural light.”
I remember people saying the same thing about blue eye shadow and bubble bangs in the 80's and can confirm very wtf wedding pics of all my aunts looking "fabulous" in one of their weddings 😂
@@grannym2880 I tried everything but I could never get my hair to feather properly so I started parting my hair on the side in rebellion and 40 years later I can't do it any other way. LOL
I'm SO SO GLAD you said something about the cream blushes and bronzers!!! When did we suddenly start using four different blushes and bronzers for one look??
I think people overuse contour and everybody does their face exactly the same. Makeup is suppose to enhance your features not copy everyone else. No one has individuality anymore and they look unnatural.
Robert, I think you and Wayne Goss are the only UK MUAs I follow on RUclips! And you’re both wiser than wearing the powder line! Lol. ❤ We are very lucky to have you!!
You should also check out Lisa Eldridge, another UK pro MUA & expert in vintage makeup. Real MUAs like Lisa, Robert & Wayne undertake significant training & it really shows.
Also omg Trixie’s makeup is so beautiful in a very specific way! it’s like a cubism-esque take on drag, she says it’s all about symmetry and geometry and it’s really cool. She’s not trying to just like, be a Pretty Lady but doing something very interesting and deconstructed and then reconstructed lol
Yes, all of this! I think Robert might have to have a stiff drink and a lie down after watching some of the unhinged videos of other queens and even her doing her makeup. It's very much a trust the process kind of thing which makes it so entertaining to watch.
Dear Mr. Welch, 😊 please do an updated 2024 Glam tutorial. I miss tutorials. I love watching the artistry, even if the makeup look may not be for me, I still appreciate the skill.
Call them out, Robert! The fact some of these influencers believe they have "credentials" (aka putting makeup on their own face & having followers) is baffling to me. It takes more than that. Also a lot of times, they put out either misleading or false content and posts about makeup only fitting for one face shape: their own. As an Asian American who grew up with predominantly white makeup creators on RUclips with no background of expertise, it's frustrating when they're telling you to do your makeup the same as them. Luckily, I did research of other Asian MUA to help me but it's disappointing to see the beauty community like this on tik tok & YT to this day, tho I'm grateful for others like you on the platform informing us on what's real.
I think the funniest bit is that trixie mattel talks about her inspo being from when she used to do makeup and her look is basically a parody of makeup techniques people do.
I blame online for everything too! 😂 I stopped following trends years ago and just do what works on my face. I'll check out a new viral product, but I ultimately try to make it work for me and my face.
Yes! I hate when people dress or do makeup for the filters and not for their actual IRL selves. It's honestly so weird to see all these fashion influencers who can't match an outfit, blend their contour or figure out their shades because they just slap a filter on everything anyway
Yeay in by 59 seconds! I second one of your opinions. The "clean girl" makeup? Have we been dirty all our lives? I seen some Gen Zs on Tiktok saying that eyeshadow are for old people. Like pleeease, you don't have the skillz (yet), just say it! ADMIT IT 😅
Don' t forget the clean skincare🙄. "This product is clean, free of blah, blah, blah". Ok, hun, thanks for the info but I want *DIRRRRTY* products, full of preservatives and actives supported by more than 40 years of scientific endorsement. And the fox said: "Oh no, it' s not that these grapes are so high that I cannot reach them😌. It' s just that they are not mature enough. I don' t want them". Yes, Gen Z fox, yes, you do NOT want them😏...
the thing that irks me about all these clean girl aesthetic things is that the routine never shows them actually getting clean, it's just attempting to look clean. like if you wanna be clean, shower lol. what you do on top of that will likely be clean too lol
Oddly enough, I've been complimented on editorial eyeshadow looks, mostly by Gen Z and Gen Alpha; a bunch of older people can't seem to stand it. It's all over the place with the opinions.
I find it hard to believe that Gen Zs ( most of whom are in their 20s) are calling eyeshadow 'for old people.' That sounds like what 12 year olds say about anything that's not considered cool by them.
8:20 when you’re talking about lighting and how it changes the way make up looks. As a barber, I had a male client that worked as a bartender. So when at the salon with bright lights, the haircut looks different, compared to a bar top with dim lighting. I acknowledge the challenge it can present with out skill 😅
Oh thank you for the not setting your cream blush part. I was feeling kind of gaslighted by the internet.. like wait, why we have to set this? why do I need to do this?. You have set me free from madness.
Ahhh!!!!Robert looking so good! 🎉Loving the collar! I hope you and your family are doing great! As a Mexican Latina, this is also a trend in the US and sometimes, they use the PINK powder 🫠😬😑(which adds insult to injury since many of us are warm or olive skintoned)
Trends I want to leave the earth include the massive overlined cupids bow and the warm bronzer as contour. Looking like an oompa loompa blow up doll! Please make it stop! 😂 Edit: spot on with adding excessive products to oily skin! It looks horrendous within a few hours!
I didn't like overlining the last time around, and I continue to dislike it. I still remember redoing my lips after an MUA did my grad makeup because I couldn't bear the disconnect between her faux line and my natural lip line. Throw in excessive lip filler, where social media is concerned now, and 😭... it just looks so bad!
That overlined lip topic is such topic for some 10 years already. 😂 I dislike it so much (unless it’s done correctly, then it can be nice). Regarding the bronzer as a contour… to me personally it feels like I can’t really find a contour product. Mostly in the shops I see bronzers only. And even if I find a contour, it’s often anyway too warm for my cool toned fair skin. 😭 So, perhaps, that one is not always necessarily someone just using a bronzer for the wrong purpose - perhaps, the person couldn’t find a better / correct option. 👀
omg I also have a similar pet hate, as you once said it, when people I don't consider to be my friends call me pet names like darling, honey, what have you. To me, it sounds like they are not taking me seriously, patronising, even, and it must be even worse when it is coming from a brand!
6:00 i completely understand what you're saying. i see so many makeup influencers nowadays who have the same skill set as me... and I'm an absolute beginner😅
This is good advice about the liquid blush I’ve been so confused cause every single time I see a tutorial with makeup steps it’s like liquid blush, then powder blush… and I’m always like doesn’t that ruin the colour / pretty finish of the liquid blush?
One thing that grinds my gears to no end is the “brightening” under eye concealer that is like 16 shades lighter than the person’s skin tone. Sometimes it looks like a make up caricature. People mindlessly try to up one each other w/o any understanding about what it is they’re doing. There, I’ve said it.
Omg I hate it soo much too. I was buying concealer and I'd brought one previously that was too light. I asked the shop owner if they had a tester in the one I wanted to try and some girl chimes in and tells me I should use the one I'd brought previously. I told her I'm In My 40s I don't want my wrinkles highlighted I want to conceal the bag the silly child who was 4 shades darker than me told me she used the really light one and it was fine. So I told her I wasn't a drag queen and to mind her business and not be in grown people's ISH and the shop keeper and another shopper started laughing and she finally left me alone and went to pay 😂😂😂😂 sorry that was long but it annoys me so much I super hate that look
And to add to the "bright" under eyes, they add a crazy color for their blush like purple or hot pink and it looks so clownish. So you have practically white under eyes with hot pink or bright purple cheeks. yikes!
I'm finally getting back into make up after a long time of not really having the time or patience and honestly thank you for this because these trends could've taken me down a dark path
12:50 Naah I always thought that laminated upwards brows are gonna be the 2020s alternative the to the 2000s slim brows or the 2010s abh brows, they never looked natural (and that's fine, but let's at least be honest lol)
I think the overarching issue here is that so many of these trends were just made for social media engagement by (sometimes) people who don't really know what they're talking about. Like do you just wear makeup or do you actually understand makeup and what different products do?
Horrid looks, you are so right. I Love your delivery and your directness. You are a bright laser breaking up the darkness of plain ignorance ( yes, ignorance for prominence’s sake!) out there. 🎉❤
Robert, I get what you’re saying about some influencers. It’s like they’re not offering things besides themselves sometimes. It doesn’t even have to be skill or talent in the area that they’re directly advertising - it could be editing skill - or they could be a good performer. But, when it feels like an influencer’s content lacks that flair in any noticeable way, it can be frustrating. It's like a one-way win for that person only, especially if they've been bought out when people are seeking honest opinions.
Love the video!❤ one trend I'm tired of seeing is the freckles trend. Oh, maybe two, the whole 'I want to look natural, but everything I'm using isn't.' Like make-up is because you want to enhance your natural looks. So many people tell me,'Oh, I don't wear makeup...' but have a full face of powder foundation on. 🙃 Why the lie,Sis? We are all slaying in our own way, own it.
@legndofphoenix Not say anything is wrong but they're are people who go over board. I have no problems with freckles my niece and older brother has them. I just answered a question that Robert gave in the video. 😊 I'm not looking for an argument, hun.
@legndofphoenix one issue is that girls with freckles were mocked not too long ago. It's like mocking brown eyes, then wearing brown contacts the next week.
@@Nakia11798 I grew up with freckles. I like fake freckles. Them being seen as beautiful is good, we need to stop this "I was bullied so other people need to also be bullied" shit

I just started doing makeup professionally and learned REAL quick just how much harder it is to apply on other ppl ..and now I cringe at all the "makeup artists" I watched ten years ago who only did makeup on themselves 😅 That's a fun hobby and all, but not being a mua
the amount of “this is why [light] concealer looks bad on you” videos i’ve seen from non-professional makeup influencers pisses me off so much. they’ll blend their literal bronzer underneath their eyes and put non-lightened concealer on top of that to compare with the “old,” lighter version. they’re always like “see the difference it makes” and i’m like… yeah queen… the light concealer still looks way better 😭💀

My makeup is the same as in real life and on camera and I don't even edit my stuff not even my vids
BB cream and Vaseline almost made me spit out my soup!! You crack me up 😂
Vaseline is evil but BB cream isn't
I remember people saying the same thing about blue eye shadow and bubble bangs in the 80's and can confirm very wtf wedding pics of all my aunts looking "fabulous" in one of their weddings 😂
The bubble poof bangs haunted rural communities all the way to 2000.
Wait what are bubble bangs? 😂 google wasn’t much help. You mean the big round brush blown out bangs that curled under?
Married 1982. I had the classic Farrah flip. 🤭
Yeah I loveeeee the blue shadow. Another color imo that looks good on everyone 😭
If you're not really good at contouring it's better not to do it lol 😅
Yes it’s copy and paste routines that look terrible on most faces
Robert, I think you and Wayne Goss are the only UK MUAs I follow on RUclips! And you’re both wiser than wearing the powder line! Lol. ❤ We are very lucky to have you!!
You should also check out Lisa Eldridge, another UK pro MUA & expert in vintage makeup. Real MUAs like Lisa, Robert & Wayne undertake significant training & it really shows.

I think he meant more about people pretending their skin care is makeup 😅

A. Everything you said… YES! Especially the visible line separation.
B. Your eyes look on point! I love the chocolate under eye!
If I remember correctly, one of Trixie's inspirations for her look was the diagrams used with instructions on how to apply makeup.
@@corvidsRcoolRobert will shrivel up if he saw Silky Nutmeg Ganache's makeup vid😅
@@lipstickzombie4981 The sharpie eyebrows! 🤣
That explanation sure is doing all the heavy lifting because it's still hideous looking. Modern drag queens have some of the worst makeup ever.
“Well what the fuck is that then?” 😂😂😂
Dear Mr. Welch, 😊 please do an updated 2024 Glam tutorial. I miss tutorials. I love watching the artistry, even if the makeup look may not be for me, I still appreciate the skill.
Yes! Me too!!
"Where is the skill, where is the talent?" EXACLTY!
I heard Robert say "Let's be a bit petty" and im 100% in 😂
I feel like this was a drunk Aunty rant at Christmas 😂 I'm here for it 💯
Watching you for years and watching your personality shine now is incredible 😂😍
"I don't know you..... I don't like you...." so relatable...
This is lovable, gentle, pettiness.
“Well what the fuck is that then?!” 😂😂 I am ☠️!! Best phrase ever! I am stealing this! ❤
It's a super UK phrase enjoy it it feels good to use
@@deedeedussard thank you! I sure will!!!! 😂
I stopped following trends years ago and just do what works on my face. I'll check out a new viral product, but I ultimately try to make it work for me and my face.
"How does my makeup look now" entirely killed me off 😂 living for this rant honestly 🖤
I agree! The line of powder under the blush/ contour makes no sense at all!
I need to know what lip you’re wearing plsss😊 ❤
I find it hard to believe that Gen Zs ( most of whom are in their 20s) are calling eyeshadow 'for old people.' That sounds like what 12 year olds say about anything that's not considered cool by them.
On a big day no one should see makeup, should just see you as pretty.
The way you say “people can do whatever they want with their makeup” makes me think I can’t. I love the sass. 🤭❤️
You CAN, but don't expect zero consequences 😂
@ 😂😂😂 So true. I often ask myself when I reach for 10 pounds of glitter eyeshadow, “What would Robert think?” and promptly put it down.
That adorably sinister giggle at the start…… GOLD. 💙🤣💙
I set mine works beautifully
Omg I'm just imagining a full beat for your baptism. Come back up with your makeup running down your face 😂
🙏🤣🤣🤣
The lil dry heave after, "bestie," has me in stitches. 😂❤
I love listening to Robert rant about things he hates 😂 so funny. And helpful as well.
Trends I want to leave the earth include the massive overlined cupids bow and the warm bronzer as contour. Looking like an oompa loompa blow up doll! Please make it stop! 😂
Edit: spot on with adding excessive products to oily skin! It looks horrendous within a few hours!
THIS!
Whenever stressed, watching you really is so nice. Bright lighting and calming atmosphere. xx
6:00 i completely understand what you're saying. i see so many makeup influencers nowadays who have the same skill set as me... and I'm an absolute beginner😅
LOL - I’m dead “does it though?” 😂
@@deedeedussard That’s the way to do it 🙌
And then everyone clapped, yeah? @@deedeedussard
And to add to the "bright" under eyes, they add a crazy color for their blush like purple or hot pink and it looks so clownish. So you have practically white under eyes with hot pink or bright purple cheeks. yikes!
I love when Robert calls this stupid ideas out 😂❤ so glad I've never felt for trends and had a good training as a teenager ❤
I love Robert & James, their laugh cracks me up. I want Robert’s divine mirror!
I'm finally getting back into make up after a long time of not really having the time or patience and honestly thank you for this because these trends could've taken me down a dark path
Thank u sooooo much for the cream blush comment! I have NEVER set my cream blush and have been seriously confused when influencers do it!!!
Robert's sass is on 🔥. 🤣
12:50 Naah I always thought that laminated upwards brows are gonna be the 2020s alternative the to the 2000s slim brows or the 2010s abh brows, they never looked natural (and that's fine, but let's at least be honest lol)
I HATE the current brow trends and refuse to do them. I just want normal brows...
You are the absolute best!! 😂😂😂 "Photographic Evidence"!!
68 year old female, just found your video's. And I am so here for the sass, and straight talking. Plus you make me laugh sooo much ❤😂
Me too! 😂
The only trend i follow is watching Robert. He helps me to stop making mistakes with my makeup and i love his sense of humor❤
Gotta say I love your evil-sounding laugh.
I don't mind my wedding photos being dated 30 years in the future, I had never been cool anyway. But I don't want to look ugly now 🙏🙏😂😂
The thumbnail is giving a Moo Deng level of attitude 😂
I *love* feisty Robert! 💜
Freckles as a trend has helped me love and embrace the freckles I do have. I put on more because they're cute. I don't know what's wrong with it.
@legndofphoenix Not say anything is wrong but they're are people who go over board. I have no problems with freckles my niece and older brother has them. I just answered a question that Robert gave in the video. 😊 I'm not looking for an argument, hun.
Legit. If they wanna look natural, use a little tinted moisturizer and go on with your day.

Robert is the only RUclipsr I watch petty rant and watch it again.
Fr, fr, people need to start learning makeup FROM MAKEUP ARTISTS instead of internet influencers, most of them barely can make THEIR OWN face look good irl and their technique and "hacks" are shit 😭
Facts!
