I do think this 12 to 24 months expiry for eye shadow palettes is ridiculous! I have so much makeup that I might not touch a palette for that long. I agree that liquids and especially mascara should be tossed more frequently. Since they put a year expiration date on EVERYTHING nowadays probably to cover themselves legally, that seems to scare people into unnecessary repurchases.
Tips to go by is if it looks off, smells off or no longer works, or is walking on its own, toss it. 👍🏼😂

I think a lot of people still haven't fully connected the dots on the fact that an influencer's collection of makeup (or clothing, etc) is used for work. We don't hire a carpenter and then go out and buy one of every tool we saw them use. We don't watch a TV show about the restaurant industry and think, "An industrial fryer is EXACTLY what my home kitchen needs!" I don't want to emulate an influencer's huge collection, but I DO want to benefit from it by listening to someone make comparisons between shades and across product lines.

@@banheesos And hoarding is a form of storage, but you wouldn't call hoarding "storing things".
Same thing with over-consumption vs compulsive spending. Over-consumption is when you buy two bottles of hairdye, because you thought you might need it, but only ended up needing the one. Compulsive spending is when you're buying every bottle of hair dye you can come across, even if you don't like the colour, just because you feel the need to.
It's about your frame of mind. Calling compulsive spending "over-consumption" is an under-exaggerated, because you can always decrease your rate of consumption to make it normal, but compulsive spending comes from an underlying issue with your current situation, and not doing so can leave you feeling anxious or paranoid.

Yep, can confirm on the retail side even stuff that is about to 'expire' on the sales floor is good for at least 2 more years unopened and one year once opened, as long as something hasn't gone wrong somewhere. They're not gonna sell stuff that'd put them at risk like that. It's a reasonable expectation of time that you'd use a product for after purchase.

In engineering or building you also have where something's "max load" doesn't mean one more gram added and it's going to fail, it's backed off from where the actual failure point is found to be to create a buffer zone and increase safety. If companies were certifying things as okay right up to the very point that they're definitely not there would be a lot more accidents (or infections) and liability, so it can seem frustrating from the consumer standpoint, but does have some solid reasoning behind it

This is silly but I'm like that but with plants specifically.
Every time I'm like "Okay, we're passing and ignoring the plant selection" I always find myself having to fight myself to not look, and when I do look and can't find a plant I want, I still feel the itch to just buy a plant, even if I don't like it, just to satisfy an itch- Which is really stupid, because buying plants I don't like doesn't actually satisfy it.
And if it's not a plant, it's some kind of plant product. Like, I currently have the *fattest* itch to transition my plant collection over to semi-hydroponics and it is *not* leaving, which is really annoying because I don't have the money to buy the blend I want, and if I ever do get the money to do that, I know I'm gonna be struggling with purchasing more plants, because it's supposed to make plant care a lot easier on top of making them grow better.
I mean, it makes some sense, because buying plants and growing medium for me is the equivalent of buying pens, pencils, paints and paper for an artist, but when a hobby takes up so much space, it becomes an absolute battlefield when it comes to keeping your house in working condition, and keeping yourself entertained.

So I was absolutely addicted to buying makeup in my 20s. Even now I see all the new releases and want them, but I've finally reached a phase of realizing that I had way too much and wasn't using any of it. I barely leave the house these days, so my stuff just sits in waiting for the magical day I'm suddenly able to be out and about all the time. The last couple of years I've really tried to cut down on new purchases and to be more mindful of "do I need this or not?" and "will I use this?". I have been going through everything I own, one category at a time, and really take stock of what I have and try it all on. I ended up sending boxes of makeup (like more than four) to my cousins to share among themselves, and what I couldn't share after trying I finally allowed myself to just throw it out. Wrong color? Gone. Hate the smell? Outta here. Formula sucks? Trash. For so long I felt like it was a waste to throw stuff out, even stuff that was seriously old, but have finally reached the stage where I really only want to keep what I love. I still have a huge collection, and intend to test out my remaining products even further to help trim it down even more and make note of who's formula's I like the best.

Like, I'd preffer this, but you also know that this is eventually gonna become a competition, and eventually it's just gonna become this toxic situation due to people taking it too far, and then people are just gonna start over-consuming again out of spite, and it's just gonna become this repetitive cycle.

Where it becomes dangerous I think is when people watch these videos and then get angry on other peoples videos saying OVERCONSUMPTION on like normal things lol. I’ve seen it, like someone has watched too many underconsumption core videos because someone will be like I’m doing seasonal decorating from stuff I have stored away in my house and the people come out in full swing insulting them for overconsumption and that’s not even overconsumption to me. Reusing things seasonally every year is kind of normal but I think certain trends make people watching the videos go mad.

The main ones to worry about are liquids around the eyes. I do have a crazy amount of cosmetics, and I ignore expiration dates if they even have any. My criteria for when products should be tossed - if the texture or color has changed; if they smell off; if I get any amount of irritation (which honestly doesn't happen). I mostly toss products that no longer work for me the way I want them to - which can be a me problem or a product problem, I don't know. Commercially made products that have preservatives can and should last a while. I wouldn't keep mascara for years, but then again, it won't perform as well as you'd want it to anyway if it is old. I have an obscene number of lip products as well, and rarely do they go off. If a lipstick gets weird, I toss it, of course. Powdered products, pressed or loose, I don't toss unless the texture changes and it becomes unusable. Powdered products won't spoil as they do not typically have any organic ingredients - at least not the ones I own. If I really do not like a product enough to keep using it, I will give it away rather than let it sit and rot.

Mascara that is ten years old should not be going anywhere near your eyes girl. The eyeshadow pallets, the pan blushes and bronzers, the face powders… all those are whatever and I use for years and years. But mascara is literally the one thing you need to be careful with. It’s why I only buy the small travel size or mini’s, because they usually run out around 8 - 10 months and that’s when they should be getting tossed anyways. It’s not that it’s old or not as good, it’s that it’s dangerous. You can get very severe eye infections from expired mascara because you are putttjng that brush to your eye every day, and then putting it back in that little tube to just… ferment.. lol so much bacteria and dirt from your face going in there and sitting, to then be put back on your eye. Not good hun! Everything else, i really say fuck it and use it till whenever you feel like.

Overconsuming for me is buying so much you don't even need or even actually want. Like Robert says, we are bombarded by ads everyday, especially on social media and it gets harder and harder to resist to buy. Before purchasing an item, I ask myself: Do I need this? Will I use it a lot? Also, I get myself gifts every now and then. And I choose something which will make me happy and something I will use a lot. When that happens I usually go for high end but before my purchase, I do my research to see if the product is actually good. Or I write down names of the products or put them in my favourites. Therefore I know I don't throw my money away. Ofc, there are some fails sometimes but as long as you give it to someone who will enjoy it or donate it, I think it's ok. I don't like buying something and let it sit in the drawer with no purpose.

Balance is one thing- but honesty is another. The people on RUclips telling us to buy this or that - need to be honest and tell us that they are gifted items, have a dedicated budget for this and that the video or TikTok is actually work. There needs to be that disclaimer on every video. Many people do and I think it is great - but more need to do that.
As for using make up past expiration dates - that is so personal- I recently discarded some makeup because it was a little off and I had no desire to see how irritated my skin would become. Had good years and it was still very clean.
You need to do a series on how to keep make up clean. Some people open a palette and it is still as gorgeous as when they first opened it - and four colors have hit pan. Others are so messy I would open for fear of what is lurking inside.
As for luxury consumption- that is a personal choice. But please don’t mortgage your house to pay for a Sephora haul because you saw it on RUclips. Common sense please.

I’ve definitely increased my spending on makeup in the last 4 years. My whole collection used to occupy a small corner of my dresser, now the whole top of my dresser has makeup products on it and I have a small shelf in a closet as well. I don’t feel bad about it because doing my makeup is something I enjoy and it’s relaxing. Do I need all of what I have? Certainly not, but I’m also trying to be a little more mindful of what I purchase now.

I wish there were smaller items to buy, so I don’t need to throw away so much when it’s expired. Nowadays I use makeup so rarely, that I always open a new mascara. It really stings when I have to throw away an item that I’ve used once or twice.

Some people collect knick knacks, some people collect sports memorabilia, some people collect makeup - and that's nothing to be ashamed of! But there is a lot of over purchasing due to constant "advertising" by media creators. It's too bad because it can be sort of like a mini addiction😢 I am extremely guilty of keeping makeup long past its expiration date when it comes to powders😕

Thats a really great question!:Is luxury make up worth it when store make up has become so good? I had to think about that for a few minutes. Heres what Ive concluded: It depends on two things, your life style & pocket book. I live fairly isolated so I dont go out a ton. So, for me store make-up gets the job done. I only own 10 makeup products total. That said, there are still luxury brands that just have better pigments, wear & feel that are worth the price. // Your amount of makeup doesnt bother me at all. It hasnt changed your ethics . Youre always honest and down to earth. Plus, you donate/ give away and dont horde. Honedtly, compared to many Ive seen its reasonable because its the content you create and your Job. Excellent video!

I just had a clear out of my 'beauty space'... spare room that the cats occupy.
I dont know if it's an age thing, but I was much more ruthless in throwing away stuff and trying to minimise my collection of makeup and skincare. At 39 and 10 months, I know what I like and need now, and it is almost embarrassing to have such excess. It doesn't give me joy to see drawers and cupboards full of crap that I don't need or use.
I am incredibly fortunate that I am in a position where I can splurge to try something, and if it doesn't work, my family and friends are very grateful ❤🎉

I’m torn on this topic. I used to work at Ulta and I accumulated way too much makeup. I no longer work there and now I rarely use makeup at all. I still have products that have been opened for years and I still even have completely sealed unopened products that are also years old!!! Obviously if something smells off or is separated I’ll toss it but I have tons of powder products that are hardly used that I will probably continue to keep and occasionally use 😅

Nail polish doesn’t really go bad - the worst that will happen is the pigments might change or fade over time or it gets gloppy (which can be fixed with thinner and a good shake). This is coming from someone who has 600+ bottles 😉 I have a few 20 year old bottles in my collection that are still fine.

Newbie to your channel. As an OG RUclipsr since 2006, I recently did a declutter because I became a fulltime caregiver for hubby who became disabled in 2017. When I mean all the stuff I had, and the regret, not of my purchases but that I didnt get to uses everything as much as I wanted because I had too much to use. Too many choices. And then I wasnt working at an office so I wasnt wearing makeup everyday like I used to. I mourned all those treasures. So I made some boxes to give away to some young ladies at church and my neices. I have decided to keep my purchases small, and use what I have because its awesome stuff!😂 I will keep giving away what I'm not using. If I see enough "pan" its going in the trash. I do believe one should be able to enjoy a luxury item if it makes you feel good and you can afford it, but within reason. I am striving for balance in all things. I actually find great joy in addordable dupes.🤷🏾‍♀️ Great video brought back memories of the RUclips and IG Pan communities, I loved their videos.❤

  • @aysudolas4810

We are in an age where normal consumption has become underconsumption. I have read that brands/companies put an expiration date on the product way before the actual expiration date (I don't remember where I read it, but it is to avoid harm to the people). And also, using luxury brands depends on the product I think. You can buy some things from luxury brands that will last longer and is safer. Other times it does not worth it.

I am so burnt out from all the sales - and then I look at my makeup cabinet - honestly every look I come across on social media I can recreate with what I have. So I am slowly going through everything - and when I don’t bond with it - I give it away on Facebook in a local buy nothing group. I recycle whatever I can. I am aiming for one makeup drawer - I think it will be very freeing

And as i read in the coments: cleaning your brushes helps with your skincare and longevity of powders

Limiting skincare and makeup items was the best thing I did in past few years. 1) My sensitive skin is better than ever the less stuff I use 2) I dont have to worry about repurchasing everything constantly (the more products you use the more you have to rebuy...) 3) It does not stress me so much financially! Even more - I can now manage to buy doubles when something I like is on a big sell, so my routine turns out to be even cheaper :)
    4) the more things you have to repurchase the more new stuff you buy. As you go to repurchase old product there is always something new that can get your attention, so you spend and buy even more.
I was very cought up on the influencer style new new new everything every month. Getting out of that mindset helped my brain to calm down, I feel less stressed and anxious 😊

Your collection makes my heart happy. The reason for this, is that you don’t sell us on anything, you talk about it and often give a more affordable alternative. Also, you are self aware and that makes such a difference. I have a large palette collection, but have gotten so much better at not buying everything. But if you ever want to donate to a Canadian who can’t get everything , I am volunteering

Buying luxury products until they run out is just getting your money's worth.
To me overconsumption is doing things like buying similar shades of something just because it has the tiniest bit of different than what you have already.
I say this as someone who has so many variations of dark plummy purple lipstick.😂

I’ve stopped buying because I’m doing a low buy year to pay off my car. And I got overwhelmed by the excess and waste. I used to buy multiple pallets a month. Last year I bought one. This year I’ve bought three. It also takes a lot to catch my eye now. I replace something if it makes me break out or irritates my eyes. I pay attention to how the product smells. I do need to clean my brushes more. 😅
