    Emily
    I hope you are going into winter with more than 1000 bees in a colony. Also 1000 bees and 300 mites is a 30% mite load not 3%. I wish you good luck!

    You said at the beginning that you’ve never lost a hive but just before 5:50 you said that you had a couple of absconds because you put frame feeders in. Which is it? An abscond is a loss of a hive!

    • @bduerr5082
      @bduerr5082 Год назад

      And how many hives went into the winter. My neighbor his first year had 100% success but he only had 3 hives and he got lucky. His next year he lost 4 out of 5.

    • @sabgab
      @sabgab Год назад +2

      Abscond... they left, technically a loss but they are living somewhere. LOL I don't count it as dead.

    • @Swarmstead
      @Swarmstead Год назад

      As long as you remember where you put them, it's hard to lose them.

    • @donbearden1953
      @donbearden1953 Год назад +5

      @@sabgab i disagree with you, if they absconded they may have died in the next few days. They may have absconded because of mites and viruses which can very well kill a colony. If you have them one day and don’t have them the next day and don’t know where they are then you don’t know if they’re dead or alive. It’s a loss on the bottom line. She said that she “had never lost a hive”, she didn’t say that she had never had a colony or hive to die. I’m not saying that you’re wrong or right, I’m just saying I disagree with your logic and I’m not trying to start an argument. I’m sure there’s folks that agree with you.

      @@donbearden1953 dang i wish i saw coments that had this level of consideration for the other side more often then bashing people. I had a coloney abscond this yeas after i gave them a old fram to clean up. dont know were they went but, I'm a glass half full type of guy and wishful to boot. So they may have left this dear world behind or a better thoight is they are happey in someones house and now the homeowners have around 10000+ freeloders for winter.

    Hi, thanks for your thoughts on the questions. i am entering my 2nd winter as a beekeeper. I have 3 hives; 2 double-deeps and 1 single deep. I have one inch foam insulation under the top cover on the shim which sits on the inner cover. I think they have enough honey for winter but I am putting on Hive Alive fondant for each hive. I did this last year when I had a single deep and the hive made it thru winter. Wishing you all the best as you strive for 100 hives.

    I noticed your videos started 7 months ago. Is this your 3rd winter of beekeeping? Sounds like you've been doing alot of studying which is great and getting experience through your experiments. Again this is great. My 1st 2 years were great learning experiments as I did splits with good luck but I didn't learn to keep the colonies extra strong for winter as the numbers decrease until too late and lost all 7 of my colonies the 3rd winter. Since then I've learned to go into winter with larger colonies and I work on mite control all year long but no chemicals are used. I've done the powder sugar dusting method on every comb of bees between weekly and monthly year round when I could pull combs. The sugar bricks are the best for moisture and food. I've had to replace the sugar bricks between 2 weeks to monthly depending on the colony. I put the bricks directly on the frames with a pillowcase of shavings on top for moisture and insulation factor, then the 2" styrofoam, Reflectix, then the lid.

    Wooo first like :-) save the money on the thermal camera. I bought a pretty high end one for my 9-5 job, and it may have been too warm outside to really see the difference in temp but through a standard hive I was a lil disappointed I couldn't really see a big red blob.

    That was a Super cool video made me feel like I had actually made it to ur class after all!😁I had a question for you, what about putting ur colonies in a shed or a temperature controlled room of some sort would that work instead of them braving the unpredictable elements?🤔I loved what u said about them Breathing I don't know why I never thought of them doing that before and I just got a cute picture in my head😊🐝💛And them creating moisture so they make their Own water🤯And the emergency exit is Brilliant as well! Do hives in the wild have all these things naturally built into them or is this a Beekeeping exclusive for them? Again, Great video and ur a Fantastic teacher, Emily and as always I Love how Honest u are about Everything; we are All still learning at the end of the day and Yes with Animals especially there is No Universal guide to Beekeeping👍So Happy u are doing what u Love, Emily I think that is Amazing and makes me So Happy for my Favorite Keeper😊🐝💛👏Keep up the Awesome work and I'll see U in the next one my friend👑🐝👑#emilyisthebeesknees #beefitbeekeeping #beefithoney #letthembee🐝 #queenbeeemily #winteriscoming #bestteacheremily

    Hive alive founden when it's below 50s or just cane suger all in a top feeder. Community feeding can lead to robbing if your hives are weak

    • @bduerr5082
      @bduerr5082 Год назад

      And it also spreads mites.

    • @cluelessbeekeeping1322

      I exclusively open feed. I LOVE it. Never had a problem with robbing.
      Don't put the feeders too close to the hive and there are no problems.
      & as far as the mite spreading problem...that's why God invented Formic Acid & Oxalic Acid.
      Open feeding is extremely effective in filling up (and I mean FILLING UP) a hive super fast.
      Give it a try. It's wonderful when you're trying to fill up 50 hives in a few days!
      It's wonderful!

    • @GaryManess
      @GaryManess Год назад

      @@cluelessbeekeeping1322 yes you can feed far away to prevent robbing of your hives. I know a lot that do feed that way. Community feeding with no other resources around is asking for robbers.
      My main point is the temperature below 50 degrees the bees won't be flying to feed. She needs something so these hives can feed if they need it,without flying to get it. Hive alive works great for that.
      Winter is here where Emily at. It's time to lock them down. Feed what hives need it and hope for the best. Just my suggestion I'm far from a expert.

    The only reason to repeat oav treatment 5 to 7 days apart is if you're treating with brood present. Oav is most effective when there is no capped brood present as the vapor doesn't penetrate the cappings, mites breed in capped cells oav only kills Phoretic mites. Research has shown repeated oav treatment with brood present is not effective. No significant difference in mite load than control groups.
