  • Today I make a TP Hut from a project in a book by Chris Ford. Then its making trees from Hydrangea heads. Plus a good starter project for a laser cutter, making lots of different types of fencing. We make wire and rail fences plus some Southern Region style concrete fence panels.
A link to the book referenced in the video, it is also available from other suppliers.

I am a Southern modeler and the best advise I can give you about Southern concreate structures is purchase a copy of Southern Nouveau and the lineside, by Irwell Press..

That's a great recommendation, thanks. I've just ordered myself a copy and will have a read before going any further with the hut and fencing.

Hi Martin, another excellent video, i have worked on BR/Network Rail within the electrification department for 35 years and to my knowledge about the TP huts and Substation. The TP Huts have at least 4 DC breakers, these breakers feed the conductor rail and are what is called the section gaps (The Conductor Rail Gaps) for maintenance work on the DC breakers these can be racked out from the DC busbar, today the traction power cables are fed directly to the Conductor thus removing the need for Hook Switches. Today's DC railway is now classed as safer isolations which has reduced risk to Staff going onto the trackside to put short circuit bar and straps when isolating a section of electrified rail for Line Possesions for engineering works. This is now operated by trained staff to basically isolate from a lineside Local Control Panel (LCP) I have worked at Wheatsheaf Substation on the Portsmouth Direct Line and the Substation building is what is known as a Brighton Style building which was built in the 1930s, the reason it is sited on a platform is due to the location and access by road the transformer rectifiers were delivered by rail back in the day.
I hope this is of help to you.

That's really useful and interesting info, thanks! As my layout is set in roughly the mid 70's I'm guessing a lot of things were done differently from today. I've watched some old training videos for putting isolating bars in place and they looked pretty scary to use.

The TP hut needs a wall phone (in a weatherproof box?) outside the door. That would be for an engineer to ask the power controller to unlock the centrally locked door.

Hi Martyn my appologies for misspelling you name, back in BR/NSE days we were taught to use the Short Circuit Bar under live conditions, this was done at Waterloo Substation on a siding where the necropolis once stood, as soon as you heard the boom of the DC breakers trip it sort of made you jump. Waterloo Substationwhich was a large structure was a Cathedral type Substation, also there were another type of brick building with a flat roof like the one at Tattenham Corner which is close to the station was called a bungalow Substation. During my time from 1987 until 2021 when I retired I have worked on many locations and have seen numerous upgrades on the region. My last hurrah was during the lockdown on the Island line upgrading the traction power supply at the three main substations at Ryde St John's, Roborough and Sandown this was done prior to the Upgraded Class 434 LT subsurface stock. I hope this information is useful to you and anyone who is modelling the Southern Region.
    Kindest Regards
    Dave.

Thanks Dave, yes this is all really interesting and very useful. Hopefully I'll be able to spend the weekend working on the layout and developing this scene further. As well as getting the rest of the track laid so I can show some trains running on these lines. Always great to get feedback and insights so look forward to sharing more videos soon.
