My goodness, these renditions are ones for the ages. The clarity of the voices, particularly in the nearly unplayable Málaga, is breathtaking. Such power - and grace - in everything she plays.
I will never, never forget Claude Helffer's rendition of Iberia, I discovered Albeniz through him, what a dream, so precious rendition ! and still love it 40 years later . By chance it can be found on RUclips.
it's amazing that Yuja and Alicia DeLarrocha play this piece a bit differently, yet both interpretations are beautiful! I heard DeLarrocha several times when she came to Los Angeles and actually was able to meet the great pianist! She added her own touches outside the score indications but she had this music in her blood and so it was convincing - esp. her command of the many different rhythms and her ability to stretch them here and there and still keep the feeling intact!
This should be music really known by heard, and not just the notes, but she is not spanish so it's like she doesn't know where to phrase the musical accents properly.
These are definitely spectacular performances. Then you listen to de Larrocha and realize why she was one of the greatest pianists in history. There’s that big of a gap, but it’s not that Wang isn’t great. ADL was just beyond human.

Nowhere near Larrocha’s level.
She is phenomenal. Those pieces are most difficult, she seems to play it so easily. What is missing is a touch of Albeniz Spanish atmosphere.
