If you will soak the gourds in a mixture of water and copper sulphate or wood preservative, you will extend the life of your natural gourds. I do like the patch you came up with. Very creative. Well done 👍
Hey Kent, yea they are supposed to show up in numbers in SC Friday according to the Migration Map, then later the farther north you go. Loads of fun to watch. Some serious martin tubers are big time and have loads of houses and fancy stuff too. Tend to babies, tagging, logging. I tell'em when they come to my hotel it's just a free room. The rest is up to them. lol
I've always seen these but didn't realize they were for a specific bird Phil. I like that easy bolt mount to the post. Thanks for the lesson bud! Take care!
Tons of fun to watch Rob. Yea, the gourds are put up for Purple Martins. They are only here for a few months, raise babies, then leave in July. Back to South America. You should put up some.
Well good Dash. This is something I love to do. The Martins are fun to watch. The remind me of F-16 but can turn sharp and stop in mid air. Early morning and late afternoon are best. I usually have around 20 birds on this one setup. They come to SC April 15, and leave in July. Thanks for watching. I saw you down in Texas eatin up all that good food. lol
Yea, according to the map with the Purple Martin Groups, they are suppose to get to SC on Feb 15. My buddy across the swamp in T"ville says he saw scouts last weekend buzzin his gourds. Usually hear them chirping when they come around. I got a couple more seasons out of my patch job. lol
Nice job of PIF rig patchin Phil! Its that time of year again, it gives me hope for Spring when u get the martin house ready. Next thing you will get the old Mule fired up and make sure that it is in good shape and then start to plan what seeds u r gunna buy for the garden. Can’t wait! Nice to see TIF wondering around in the back yard. J
Yea, there is a time and season for everything, right. The Martins are suppose to be here Friday officially in SC. won't get to wisconsin until mid May. I'm ready for my little group. Usually begins with 2, then after a couple days 6, then another week 10, then after a month or 6 wks there will be about 20 birds. then after the babies, this hotel will be full. lol Yea, won't be long to plow. Not sure what the main crop will be. corn does real good. May do lima beans this year.
What da…? I tune in to my favorite BBQ channel and what do I get??? Gourd envy… GOURD ENVY I say! I thought it would be fun to watch this with the wife --- wrong. Now we gotta go looking for gourds. Thanks a lot! 😄😄😄
Had a small Southeast Alabama town. Blinking light had been shot out and the martins made a home inside. Families used to make water dipper from gords with long necks.
That's funny about the Martin house in the light. They will do that. Yea, the gourds can be used for lots of things. Some people clean them up and paint them.
Phil, I love it. I run 5 different bird feeders in my back yard. My yard is a lot smaller so I do not usually have a bird house. It is relaxing watching birds feeding all year round. This weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count. You can read about it here, gbbc.birdcount.org/ Wearing shorts in January I am so Jelly. LOL The winter in Maryland has been very warm this year.
I need to get me some of them Gourd houses. Were did you get the pole at? I like the bird feeder you had when you were sitting in the backyard talking about the gourds. That was a pretty great idea to patch them like that Phil. All I have is one big Gourd (My head) hahah. I bet birds would love to land on it too.
haha, yea we heard that at work and with my school friends down thru the years. Someone's turn at something, we'd say Gourd head. Just don't hear that corny stuff anymore. I got that pole from a guy who sold poles, umbrella racks, and gourds over in Darlington right across from the Darlington 500 Racetrack. Turn on the road across from the track and he is about one block down on the right. Probably see poles and racks standing around. Not sure he is still selling. He was a senior 7-8 yrs ago when I got it. Maybe someone still there selling them. Look on my instagram. I put a name and number for someone else in Darlington selling this stuff.
@@progers5019 haha yeah leave it to me to bring up the corny stuff lol. I still hear Gourd head a bunch around here. I will check out that number buddy. Thanks for sharing. Hope you are doing well.
Put them about 15-20 high and not close to buildings or trees. Try to put it in an open area where they can have a free path to come and go. They are lots of fun to watch when you sit out especially early morning and late afternoon.
What do you call this video. He’s outa his Gord. Ive thought about putting out purple marten house on pole with pulley, I hear they keep the mosquitos under control. I have several bird feeders squirels ground hogs the bird feeders attract all kind of wildlife. I was going to suggest paper mache before u deviced gord patch. I see your grass is greening up. Its been hovering around 32 degrees here going to dip down to zero on 14th. Did you happen to see the spider 22 pellet attachment for kettle little pricey. You can check that out at How to Lou nice review. In one video someone was asking about you replacing offset with a verticle smoker did you have a particular model in mind. If you like to fish check out Hook Line & chill he knows how to run a trot line and catch subscribers too. Nice 👍 job on the Gord hotel you have alot of patience.
Yes watching the Martins fly is lots of fun. Nothing like them. Picture an F-16 that can stop mid-air, or turn sharp, freefall straight down into the entrance hole. Plow time is comin. Stay Tuned. Been feelin a little poorly lately. Not much action going on. Thanks for watching John.
@@inharmonywithearth9982 Yes, I just saw a guy talking about the half moon shaped door. I do have Starlings. I use to try to shoot them with the BB gun. I'll look into converting the door shape. thanks

Now we know the meaning behind the old saying of Gourd ahead. LOL. Awesome job done rebuilding your bird gourd pole. Hope you have a great week buddy!
haha yea, the guys at work use to say that all the time. This generation probably never heard that. lol Thanks for watching good buddy.

Take those seed and plant them along a fence. The vines will grow along the fence and they are super easy to grow.
interesting....
Thanks Tommy. Lots of fun watching them fly.
Going to grow us some more houses this year so we can put up next year.
May I suggest starling resistant entrance holes in the future. It can save your martins from those invasive species

Great idea. Thanks. I bet they sell them gourds that are fake too somewhere. I might try this. How high do you put them usually?

January with green leaves. Unfortunately where I live we get sparrows, crows and pigeons.
