    The Martins really are incredible. Not only do they look and sound beautiful, but we give them a place to stay, and they keep it from getting too buggy. Everyone’s a winner!

    We have positively identified several Purple Martins in our yard this last year. They have remained throughout the summer and still see them sporadically into fall. We have not provided any housing for them and really don't know where they are nesting. We are in north central Florida and were really surprised to see them living here without man made housing.

      I just made 24 cavities that are about 5” deep. What dimension is considered deep(enough)?

    All you need is sunflower seeds. MY YARD IS FULL OF THEM.

      They don't eat sunflower seeds

      Must be a different bird. They only eat insects

      I'm confused. Is your yard full of sunflowers or
      is it full of Purple Martins ?

    • @julieontology7214
      @julieontology7214 3 года назад +1

      So glad you are watching your backyard birds! The ones eating your sunflower seed are blackbirds---starlings, grackles, various other blackbirds, or cowbirds. Purple Martins only feed in the air. They are aerialists and catch only flying insects. They have a flight pattern: flutter, glide, circle, climb, glide, circle, dive, swoop. They often fly as high as 300 ft in the air. They never go down to the ground unless there's a fight over a nesting site and are knocked briefly to the ground and fly back up. Fledglings might rest on a fence or small tree near the ground until they are ready to fly back up to their gourd or house. But they are pretty small at that stage.
      Martins don't even go down to the ground to drink water. They never use bird baths. They fly over a pond, stream, or lake and dip down to the surface and fly back up.
      The only way to see them on a regular basis is to put up specialized housing, and maintain that colony year after year. They're very selective about where they nest. Contact the Purple Martin Conservation Association for more information, if you're interested.

    Im having a fight between the sparrows and martins .what should l do? In afraid if l try to remove the sparrows nest . The purple martins would see me and dont come back. They r trying to nest but the sparrows dont let then. It is a new house.

    • @julieontology7214

      Contact the Purple Martin Conservation Association for help. If you try to remove the sparrows nests and they have eggs or nestlings, they will attack your purple martin eggs or nestlings. It's possible to trap the male sparrows and find some way to dispose of them. Have the PMCA send you a catalog and you can take a look at the trapping options.
      But if you set up a trap you have to check it every 30 minutes or so and make sure you haven't trapped a bluebird or a Martin. And you want to trap male house sparrows and those bird has to be destroyed. If it's relocated it'll just fly back to your yard because they love those Purple Martin gourds and houses.
      This year my Purple Martins stayed close to the gourds in the spring and kept most of the sparrows out. I have 24 gourds and 22 of them were occupied by Purple Martin who successfully raised families, but I've had this colony for 7 years. And the people who had this house before me started the colony, so it's very well established.
      It takes some hard work and care to maintain and grow your colony, but it's definitely worth it! The PMCA can help you. You can call them during the hours they are open and speak to one of their Purple Martin specialists. They will send you catalogs of equipment you can look over and choose what's best for you. You don't have to spend a huge amount of money at first. Just build gradually. Good luck!!!

    When should I put up a first time house ? I read 4 - 6 wks after first arrivals - is that correct ?

    • @ThatOneguy-br3uf
      @ThatOneguy-br3uf 4 года назад

      Put it up as soon as they are arriving in your area. Sometimes adult birds need new housing as their old housing is gone/removed
