RIP Nell Carter, Dolph Sweet and the other cast members. This show dealt with life issues that we see today at a higher level. In today’s world things are more complicated. This show handled those issues on a family oriented basis.

I loved all the scenes in the hospital setting. Nell using good humor at the nurse and the lady as they put obstacles in her way. I would of done the same thing if I was in the same situation. This show always made me laugh. You will never find shows like this ever again.

I think that the busy body on the pay phone really got what she deserved! To you think that you would have been cleaver enough to think to hang her purse on the gurney pole? I thought it was great to see the little lady go charging after her purse!

Good episode. Something that every parent should talk to there kid's about and I am not just talking about the Mom's. Dad's need to educate there son's and daughter's as well.
I think it was more that he didn't want to face the fact that Katie wasn't a little girl anymore. It was probably best that he didn't go in right away. Cheif had a temper and he might have said some other things that would have also hurt her feelings. Some things you can't take back.

Seasons 1 and 2 are the best of this show. From season 3 on, Nell just seemed MAD in every scene, and with each season she became madder and louder and very uninteresting and unfunny. But seasons 1 and 2 Nell was at her natural best.
100% correct. They gave Nell more creative control starting from season 3, and it completely changed the tone and the dynamic of the show. It went from wacky characters, raw insult humor, and physical comedy to more standard sitcom fare. Nell was concerned that her character was seen as fat and pathetic, but watching the first two season I saw an overweight woman who was very confident in her own skin. So what was the problem? Nell was a very talented actress and singer, but unfortunately just wasn't well suited to have creative input in a sitcom, plus she had a huge drug issue and lots of personal demons. During the first two seasons, this was one of the best sitcoms on TV, and actually holds up fairly well today, despite the 40+ years that have passed.
That nurse took way too much abuse! She was just trying to do her job, and everyone blamed all of the hospital's problems on her! I know we were supposed to hate her.... I just felt bad for her. Maybe I'm getting old? I know I found this hilarious in 1982.
I also saw this on prime time in 1982. The thing about this episode that has stuck with me all these years is Nell's interaction with the busy body on the pay phone. I thought that was the funniest part of the whole episode! What did you think of it?

Funny how these sitcoms were really popular with kids, yet tackled some of these very adult issues! Anyway, I liked this episode, and in fact really liked most of season 1-2. The show slipped some in seasons 3-5, with Nell getting more creative control, and demanding changes which did away with a lot of the show's wackiness and raw insult humor. By season 6, the show was trash and didn't resemble the original version at all.
I will agree that, by season 6, the show was pretty bad! It really overstayed its welcome. In any event, I an still interested in what you think of Nell's interaction with the woman hogging the pay phone. I thought it was great!@@pokerfraudalert

andrew plotnick yes you are so right. She would not listen to Nell to begin with. The other shows are just as good and poignant as well.

He was a great dad. He really didn't understand what was happening. If he did understand, he would of went right in to see Katie.
