Chris is a covert narcissist. Narcissism is becoming very common ( gay, straight, whatever). I had a very similar experience with someone who used many of the same tricks from Chris's playbook. Push - Pull, mind games, undefined situations, and other strange things, which essentially became emotional manipulation and control tactics. Oh, and "Love Bombing."

Regardless of the details of the situation - we can all relate to the pain of a broken heart :( and this is one of the most kick-in-the-teeth heartbreak stories I’ve ever heard. You’re a really strong guy for having held it together. I’m 31 and I’ve never had a boyfriend (much as I want one). If this happened to me I think it would be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Not working. Alcohol is not going to solve a problem. Time will. The worst thing you can do is crawl into a corner. Better is to go out in the world (not necessarily dating).
I know many people have commented that this story has nothing to do with being gay and that it can happen to anyone. My take is that the gay social circle is smaller than most, and this tends to happen more often than normal. I know several gay friends where this exact situation has happened to them before. And while love wasn't involved, it has happened to me when I meet someone new. I commend you for being a bigger person and taking the high road. In so many cases, you just have to let go and move on. Again, very hard to do when the social circle is so small.
I've never admitted this before but I'm going to put this perspective out there so people understand this side of the situation. I hate these kind of situations where you have no say in the course the relationship takes- in the other words the partner won't change their mind. You end up having to be the nice guy and cater to the other person's desire. Sure, there's the saying "if you love them, let them go" but whenever does the person have any regard for your feelings and needs? It's always what they want.

OMG. Travis I am you. This situation will probably happen to me. I'm amazed it happens in LA such a large city. Astounded. Hearing this story makes me even more scared of getting involved with people. What is wrong with these crazies. My jaw dropped lol! No idea why Chris would still want to date somebody who just hooked up with somebody they were previously seeing. The whole thing is a mess and you deserve better. The thing that hurts the most is seeing somebody care for you then just disappearing and not giving a shit anymore...I never will understand that.

I totally understand your point Travis because in this community is more susceptible that these kind of things happen. I'm talking based on my own experience, and I'm not telling that everyone is like that. However, it's difficult to find a man that is faithful. Because of these dating apps everyone knows/meets everyone and these things happen. I'm trying to find the right person not the perfect one because we know that the perfect person doesn't exist, but at least someone that gives me the tranquility that is just with me and is not cheating. Great Story. Had me at the edge of my seat and got many choice reactions from me like it was one of my fave tv shows lol. BUT i can't help but also feel that Preston kinda knew more than he was letting on. I feel like in some weird twisted sense, maybe Chris mentioned something about you briefly or hell maybe he saw many pics of you guys on Instagram (whatever the case) and he got a bit curious and didn't expect to have the chemistry with you. But that's just me. To actually DM you and be connected to Chris seems to much to be a HUGE coincidence. The gay community is small enough lol.
I've actually had this happen to me before. You didn't do anything wrong at all. However if he didn't involve you in his decision to move, he probably didn't care as much about you as you thought. You deserve better than that.

Im so sorry Travis. Thats the worst feeling in the world. I have kind of had something similar to that happen to myself and it just leaves you feeling worthless. You wonder if this is what all relationships are about and you question everything. You get to the point where you just don't want to go through that ever again and just end up being alone to avoid future pain. Though, you know this is not the true solution. This is some seriously a plot twist.
I do understand the separation from your boyfriend . Where sometimes you just want time for yourself to think. It's very easy to lose yourself or self worth in a relationship. So a separation just helps you think of yourself more than the relationship for a moment.
The worst thing about being gay is meeting other guys who preach equality then discrimate themselves based on colour age muscularity ...its so twisted.
So, I've never been in a relationship or anything close. No, like, "talking to guys" or whatever. And honestly, watching these videos and listening to these stories make me SO GLAD that I will probably die alone. Like, if I'm ever bummed about being single, I'll just come to this channel and remember that these are things that I, as a person, cannot handle.
I'd much rather date as a straight girl. I envy them. I do understand straight women have their own unique struggles in life, BUT when it comes to dating and finding love, I'd much rather be a chick.
Their dating pool is over 90% bigger than a gay man's, they don't have to make the first move and risk rejection (the onus is on the guy to make the first move) straight boys have been groomed from childhood to worship women and trip over their feet to impress them.
Straight guys are expected to pay for nearly everything. Notice how all of the female "empowerment and independence" chatter seems to go out of the window when it comes to who pays for dates and who gets screwed in divorce court.
Also, have you noticed how much easier it is for even the most AVERAGE looking of straight women to get cute boyfriends? I see average looking (and in some cases, downright unattractive) girls with cute boyfriends everywhere I go. The vast majority of cute straight guys are nowhere near as picky and shallow as gay men.
Straight guys will date/sleep with just about woman who is decent looking, not too old, not morbidly obese, isn't hypermaterialistic, has a down to earth, easy going fun personality and likes to have sex.
The only straight guys who are super picky about women's looks are super fit/buff jock dudes and rich/celebrity straight guys. Guys like that can get any woman they want, so they can afford to be picky asf.
Whenever I hear a straight girl complaining (unjustifiably) about her dating and relationship woes, I just tune her out. I don't want to hear it! Women have NO CLUE what it is to truly struggle to find love. If they had to live as a non wealthy, non white, average looking gay man for one month or longer, they'd be BEGGING to have their vaginas back.
The very same straight girls who complain about guys are the one's who could easily have a cute, loyal and loving boyfriend IF they weren't so addicted to dating jerks and douchebags. They don't want to be with the nice guy until they hit 40, have kids who are in Jr High school and they've been all used up.
There are so many cute lonely straight boys out there who want love and are ready to give it to decent looking girl with a great personality. I have several straight guy friends, so I know this.
I always joke with them if they could just be gay, they'd find love much easier, bcuz gay guys would treat them so much better than any women will.
You'd be amazed at how many straight guys are flattered by the attention they get from gay guys. They like it bcuz FOR ONCE they aren't making the first move (they way they're forced to do with women) It is a myth that straight guys are just looking for sex.

Sometimes guys can't make up their minds. They're too particular, from what I have observed, about what they want in other guys. I was always told that I was too hung up on looks.
I have to say that "Chris" is just that special brand of ass-hat that has to be the one to leave you, because his ego will not let you be the one to walk away from him. There's lots of people like that (male, female, and those who have yet to make up their minds) on every part of the sexual spectrum.

Oh one more thing, because I'm old and know stuff from experience... the friendship will be organic if it's going to happen at all. I am friends with the majority of my exes now because I chose to let go of the deep feelings of both Love and Resentment. Unless that's settled, you really cannot be friends. I still can't be friends with my ex husband because he's a shitty dad. So there's resentment. You're going to weed it out eventually. When it comes to the feels, there's this really good article about the stages of love that you should check out. It will help you in detaching from your desire to feel attached when you get that sense of warm fuzzy omg this guy is perfect! It's not always the best for your heart and definitely not every man is worthy of your love and affection. Save that part of you for the good ones!

Travis; I mean this with all the love and support I would give my best friend. You have to stop this. As the infamous quote says: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." You keep meeting these same type of guys, in these same type of situations, and when they tell you they can't be in a relationship; you push to stay in their lives under the guise of being friends when you know that your heart is already too invested for that and you're actually holding on this minuscule amount of hope that staying around them will make them want to date you. To quote Maya Angelou: "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." If someone says they can't be in a relationship with you, believe them & cut them off. If they ask you why they were cut off, tell them your heart is too invested in them right now & stick to your guns.
Also, when you meet a guy some of the first things you need to be asking are: What are you looking for? Do you live in LA? Do you have any plans on moving in the near future? If either answer is not to your liking, and you know you could develop strong feelings for them, you need to move on because you're only setting yourself up for heartbreak trying to pursue anything.
Last, as far as "Preston" goes, why would you even dwell on him after that? The only outcome I see is him "dating" you in LA, "Chris" in Miami, and probably other people in other cities he tours to, all at the same time, until someone figures it out; ending in complete and total heartbreak. I know all this might be very harsh & tough love coming from someone you don't know, but that's exactly what it is; Love. Stop making compromises with yourself about what you want in a relationship. You're better than that, and you deserve better than that.

You start your story with how refreshing it was to meet a corporate guy who wasn't some actor, model LA type who are all "crazy". Your words. Which is basically YOU. HAHA.... He may have been refreshing for you but for him you were probably just another LA type that he just wanted to have a good time with but would never take you seriously. Change has to come from you. I'm gonna answer your question, but I have a response to the situation you described (walking away from Chris at that time and him thinking you were crazy that you needed space): it's clear that you cared deeply enough to still have some type of friendship with him. In my opinion a break from each other seemed necessary in order to reestablish what it would be like to go from boyfriends to friends. If it didn't happen then some clear boundaries needed to be put into place in order to transition from boyfriends to friends. I think what gets confusing is that in most relationships is that some of that boyfriend behaviors (e.g., still flirting, texting and calling as much as you did when you were boyfriends, saying things like I miss you etc) tend to still leak over into the friendship role you're both trying to transition to. Also, I'm making the assumption that these behaviors leaked into the friendship relationship. However you were holding onto hope, so that's why I'm making the assumption that you were both still doing some of those "boyfriend things." Not surprising btw, how do you go backwards in a relationship? Am I right? Lol. Secondly, it didn't seem like you were ready to take some space away from him either. I hope that doesn't sound too harsh. I just think some boundaries on what your friendship was going to look like should've happened. Also confronting his need to still keep talking to you like, "you keep saying we're friends and you know I care a lot about you, and I feel like you're still treating me like more than just a friend, what do you mean we're 'just friends'?" You know?
Now to answer your question on what I would've done. I think I would've done the same thing honestly. It's odd to say because I just intellecualized the entire situation into what would have been a great outcome. However, I know me and when I get emotionally connected with someone who texts me everyday or makes me feel special, why the fuck would anyone want to let that go and hold some boundaries. I do think I would have held onto hope as well.
Lastly, I agree with some people that this title was deceptive 😂 sorry not sorry mate. I think as an audience we're making an assumption that this is the worst thing about dating in the gay community--I agree. However, I disagree, out of all things, this is by far not the worst things about being gay. However, dating in the gay community, yes. Yassss queen! This happens too many fucking times. I just think I messed up my friendship with this guy but I'm just giving him his space plus he's already with some else. I thought we were going to end up together because we lived together and he once built me a blanket fort it was the best thing ever but I have accepted that it wasn't that I wasn't good enough I just wasn't what he was looking for. It hurt but I'm definitely understanding that. The distance definitely helped me. Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss him.
